'One project a day' thread

BlueLobelia · 18/04/2021 12:51

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

Gah work plays havoc with my good intentions!
I am going to sort the sewing basket a home right now.
I'll sort the books and put all the clothes away after work then I feel like I've accomplished something today.

BlueLobelia · 28/04/2021 11:32

I seem to have hit an emotionally low patch so am not doing very much. But I did clean the light switches and door handles downstairs yesterday.
Today to be honest if I just manage to do my (usual) allocated 30 minutes upstairs tidying I will be happy with that.

@fnib glad it is not just me!
@BlueLobelia sorry to hear you have hit a low point. I don't know if this will help but you have inspired so many people to take small steps to improving their lives in different ways including self care, tackling the to-do lists or reducing the mental burden of having loads of things that should be done and haven't. I am so glad that you wrote this thread because I would be further behind than I am, all thanks to tackling ilone project at a time.

BlueLobelia · 28/04/2021 12:16

Thanks @Iceisnice that did help. :)

I did a load of handwashing today which has been sitting around for ages. Also after a long search found the charger for our hedge trimmer that I carefully stored for winter!

Sorry to hear @BlueLobelia . I second what @Iceisnice says above.

Breathmiller · 28/04/2021 12:33

Yes, well done and thank you bluelobelia
Great thread and you have inspired an army of mumsnetters. It's okay not to do so much all the time. It comes on waves I always think. Just ride the times you need to be softer with yourslef, you will be more motivated and busy again another time. Hope you feel brighter soon.

I have sorted out a bill for my work that was looming. And contacted someone about my building warrant

BlueLobelia · 28/04/2021 12:36

Thanks all, I really appreciate your words.

I have just motivated myself to put a wash on (including washing the cats' tablecloth.... they have an eating table in the spare bathroom so the dogs do not snaffle their food and they have their own (yellow gingham) tablecloth [grins] )

I am taking it very easy today. The DS bullying situation is taking alot of my energy.

Just been in to my business with dh and teen son and had a massive clear out ready to partially open tomorrow.

Luckily my business has survived if not my plants.

drspouse · 28/04/2021 14:03

This is such a good idea. I am clearing out a cupboard in my lunch hour (including a box that has been in there since we moved in, 4 years ago this week Blush)

mogloveseggs · 28/04/2021 15:19

@BlueLobelia Flowers

mamakoukla · 28/04/2021 15:19

Absolutely inspiring thread... and I am back again. I love reading through the variety of one projects that people are accomplishing. No task is too small or trivial; they all need done. Really enjoying the warm glow of the power of one (task at a time)!

Today I collected a library book and also sorted out some banking items I had been studiously avoiding.

mamakoukla · 28/04/2021 15:21

Flowers to BlueLobelia and all of you wonderful people. Out there somewhere is a person who had a skip of delight at achieving something today. Thank you

SydneyCarton · 28/04/2021 16:35

Yesterday's project was cleaning the kitchen windows (inside only as I live in a first floor flat Grin). Much better. Today will be listing a couple of things on Olio which I have been meaning to do for a while - fingers crossed someone wants them!

BlueLobelia · 28/04/2021 17:55

Thanks so much everyone for supporting me. I am feeling alot brighter now. :)

Tonight I plan to sit down and do a proper meal plan as that has gone a bit haywire also lately.

I used to have daily 'themes' and then worked around it, so Mondays would be a pasta dish, Fridays a fish dish for example. Tonight we are having sausages so I was thinking;

Monday- pasta something
Tuesdays- rice based something
Wednesdays- sausages / hotdogs
Thursdays - chicken theme
Fridays- fish-based theme
Saturdays- roast
Sundays- light meals like boiled eggs and toast etc / soup, bread and cheese.

After dinner (sausage and butternut squash casserole) I will sit down and start planning. That's a good project for today. :)

@BlueLobelia this thread has been really motivating for me, so thank you! I'm not sure I updated this yesterday but I have continued to make progress in decorating DDs room, and today smashed out lots of other little jobs that I've been putting off, even though I have the cold and wanted to go to bed. Grin

Divineswirls · 28/04/2021 18:26

I cleared out a large, deep Kitchen drawer which had more junk in it than I realised so I'm please to have more storage space.

I also creatively attached a full bottle of water via some thick ribbon to a garden furniture cover to help stop any idea's it has of blowing away.

petalpower · 28/04/2021 18:26

I haven’t posted on this thread but I’ve done so many jobs (large and small) as a result of being inspired by it so thank you Blue Lobelia! I hope you feel better tomorrow.

AlwaysLatte · 28/04/2021 18:33

Great idea! Today we replaced the gravel boards in the terraced beds in my moms garden, then put slabs around our new chicken coop to keep Mr Fox at bay. Tomorrow is ferrying day for my elderly parents but I'll try to find a small thing to do. So satisfying'

Sparklynewname · 28/04/2021 19:06

@BlueLobelia, sorry to hear that you were feeling down. Please have a look around and admire the loveliness that you have achieved in not only your home, but in the homes of mumsnetters across the land 💐
DH is putting the first coat of colour on in the loo and has decided on a new loo seat. I have said not to get it today as it won’t go on today but I also don’t know if it will be required- the one in there is still fine and the wood might go with the new colour once the cabinet is back in.

Chunkymonkey123 · 28/04/2021 19:36

Today at work I cleaned my desk of the giant pile of paper. I then picked up some paint samples on the way home. I haven’t done any washing though which needs to be my next job, I need to start putting it on before I leave for work in the morning.

Fnib · 28/04/2021 19:37

Flowers Brew Cake to you @BlueLobelia. Wish we could sit down and have a proper cuppa.
I agree, the homes of mumsnetters across the land are that little bit better because of you.
I didn't do the task I planned today, but I've kept on top of usual things and everyone's fed, there are clean clothes for tomorrow and I got some work done, so I'm counting it as a win!

RunningKatie · 28/04/2021 19:49

I love mamakoukla's idea of a skip of delight at achieving something!
Today I have cleaned the landing window frame, and also wiped down the front door step.
I've sorted the baking ingredients for tomorrow, and even finished a report at work (hurrah!). I am now wfh forever and I am really struggling with it. I miss the quiet hubbub of an office Sad
I want to hoover the landing and stairs before the dc go to bed, and then enjoy Sewing Bee whilst writing to my pen pal.

17bluebirds · 28/04/2021 21:55

I finally finished the tile stickers, it's taken me 3 days instead.of 1. It was only about an hours job, but I somehow managed to stretch it out.
On a happier note, I've been offered a new job!
I can't tell anyone yet cos it's not all confirmed, but I can tell you lot. 😀

Catname · 28/04/2021 22:10

Today, I’ve been wiped out by my COVID vaccination so did nothing but last night, for a very short time, I had no laundry hanging up, laundry folded waiting to be put away, or any ironing waiting to be done. The planets collided for that to take place 🌍💥🪐

Iceisnice · 28/04/2021 22:28

@BlueLobelia Wink Daffodil
Well today was going to be a simple job but I have sidelined that for what I actually had to do today: clear and clean the box room for my 5 yo dd to sleep in for tonight at least because she feels it is perfectly fine to create a fuss before 5 most mornings about wanting to come downstairs (because I am down there feeding her 6 wk old DB) and in the process waking up then entire household, especially her 2 yo sister who she shares a room with....
Managed to get it cleared, dusted and vacuumed and all of her bits put in (spare bed was already in).
I felt bad and thought she might be upset, but nope looks like she was relishing the time alone. Wonder how it will go tomorrow morning.
