RIP Prince Philip, you were definitely one of the better ones. While this comes as a shock for some of us, I suspect the doctors made the royal family aware that he was in his last weeks. Most likely heart failure.

SheldonesqueIsAlmostHuman · 09/04/2021 13:07

cornettoninja love that photo Smile

I’m glad he could still tickle her after all those years.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 09/04/2021 13:07

So very sad, he loved the queen and she him Sad I hope the queen stays strong. RIP Prince Philip Flowers

DoubleTweenQueen · 09/04/2021 13:08

I am really saddened - I think mostly because he and The Queen are the same generation as my beloved grandparents, who I miss very much. My Grandfather also served in the Royal Navy and met Prince Philip a number of times. His passing marks the end of an era for me.
My heart goes out to The Queen, for whom this will be such a huge blow.
The ghouls are truly out on twitter :(

TheBullfinch · 09/04/2021 13:08

Very sad news. What an age to reach.

I liked him. He reminded me of my dad.

KoalaOok · 09/04/2021 13:09

Very sad for his family and those who loved him

Nor would the Chagossians.

Bettercallsaul1 · 09/04/2021 13:10

Sad Unexpected timing after so recently surviving a serious infection and successfully undergoing a heart procedure. I thought he would make it until his 100th birthday anyway. It sounds as though he died peacefully in his sleep though, which will comfort his family.

@SallySycamore

I feel sorry for Prince Harry actually — he'll have been woken up in the middle of the night with the news. Not that it makes it easier being daytime, but I know I'd rather be up and dressed and it be daylight than get the call in the middle of the night.

I think it seems a shock, even though he is very old, because for most people, they can't remember a time without him.

I was thinking about this too. It must have been very difficult to get in touch with all the family members to let them know personally before releasing the news to the press.
bedroomews · 09/04/2021 13:14

He was 99 but it still shocked and saddened me. I really feel for the Queen, he was her rock for over 70 years and I genuinely hope this loss doesn't leave her vulnerable, particularly her health.

Cactus1982 · 09/04/2021 13:14

I feel so much for the Queen. This will be very hard for her losing her husband of 73 years. I hope we don’t see a decline in her as so often happens in elderly couples when one dies, the other usually isn’t far behind.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 09/04/2021 13:15

@JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows
thanks for breaking it to me that The Crown isnt a documentary!

give over. this attitude sums up mumsnet.

i am here to show my condolences.

OurChristmasMiracle · 09/04/2021 13:15

He has been a very sick man recently so whilst this doesn’t come as a massive shock and I’m sure it was almost expected by the queen she must be absolutely lost right now. I can’t imagine losing a husband of 70 years. They will have literally been through everything together. He will have been her strength, support, guide and sounding board.

Sending condolences to the family.

I do wonder about the funeral whether all family members will be able to attend the actual service- and whether all will be able to travel.

Meltinthemiddle · 09/04/2021 13:15

I feel sad for the Queen and his family. But he has had a very good life and is very lucky to have a such a long life. His passing definitely is not a shock though. I'm just not looking forward to hearing from H and M again.

HandsIntoTheFire · 09/04/2021 13:16

Realistically though do you not think Harry was probably aware it was imminent? I might be wrong of course but in the circumstances I think it probably wasn’t a shock

ancientgran · 09/04/2021 13:16

@oakleaffy

A long life well lived.

I do feel sorry for the Queen, she has lost a companion.

Hopefully Harry will be ''Allowed'' to go to the Funeral, to visit his grandmother in her hour of need.

I never understand why going to a funeral seems more important than visiting the dying.
Bubblebu · 09/04/2021 13:17

it is not sad he did not reach 100.

it is sad in as much as any death is sad but no more.

flippin heck he had the best healthcare money can buy, and he reached 99 years (far older age than the average male brit)

It's interesting that I heard this news here FIRST, which makes me wonder if am on MN too much. Very sad news. They've been married 73 years?? Wow, longer than some people get to live. That's awesome, though not to say it was easy. May he rest in peace. The pic in the Evening Standard of him leaving hospital showed how frail he was but am glad he was able to go home and be in familiar surroundings for his last days.

Not unexpected but still feels really surreal, and sad. Hope HMQ is ok.

YanTanTethera123 · 09/04/2021 13:20

RIP and condolences to the Royal Family 💐
I met him several times and he seemed a very friendly and intelligent man with a sense of humour. A real gentleman too.

Logically I’m sure it wasn’t a shock for any member of the RF, but the emotional reality is very different. Particularly in the case of Harry, this is a pretty tough time of upheaval for him. I would be surprised if it wasn’t a trigger for introspection for him
