@butterpuffed

I kept getting 28 but understand how it's 10 now as I didn't use the brackets correctly !

What's BODMAS ??

There aren’t any brackets, though, so here the B (brackets) in BODMAS is irrelevant. Nor is there an O, or a D. There is an M (multiplication) so that is the first thing you do. Then you do A(addition). There’s no S.

@StormzyinaTCup

I think the follow on thread to this is:

“teachers excluded, how many people have ever needed to use BODMAS since they left school?” Wink

Pretty much everyone who writes software with any numbers in it.

I write scientific software, there's a few extra operator precedent rules but BODMAS is always part of them.

Cardboardeaux · 20/03/2021 19:06

10

2 + 1 + (1 x 7) = 10

I'm sure there are a few careers out there (other than teachers) that use BODMAS but imagine these are in the minority. Mental note made not to go into scientific software programming, I will stick to accountancy Smile!!

Out of interest when you write software do you put the brackets in or not?

dontsaveusername · 20/03/2021 19:17

Haha ok it's 10

waterlego · 20/03/2021 19:20

It’s hilarious that people are still asking ‘what is BODMAS’ when they could Google it- or even just read the thread!

Best real life example ever is the PP @howmanytoes brilliant example counting the money is your purse. Say you find two pound coins and three £10 notes.

2 + 3 * 10

BODMAS tells you to multiply three times £10 before adding £2. But then you knew that anyway, didn't you?

It's how stuff works.
