A gold star for a correct answer

Anyone up for solving this puzzle?
OP posts:
DadDadDad · 20/03/2021 17:51

@thetwinkletoescollective - the last line has single bananas, not pairs of bananas. Also you are meant to take account of the time on the clock-face, so...

The answer accepted by the OP is that it should be:

2 + 1 + 1 x 7 = 10

HyacynthBucket · 20/03/2021 17:52

I haven't read all the posts - only the first two posts after the puzzle - I make it 70.

ShipOfTheseus · 20/03/2021 17:52

@thetwinkletoescollective

I don't get that:

10 +10+10 = 30
2+2+ 10 = 14
2+3+3 = 8
3+ 2+ 2 x 10 = 70

so 70 not 90 !! so how can it be 10? I don't get the explaination and what is BODMAS?!!!

You are making two types of mistakes. First, you are not observing the pictures properly. Second, Bodmas is the order in which you do the calculation (it only affects the bottom row). Your bottom row of figures - every one is the wrong number. And you’ve also made a mistake in the calculation.

Did anyone else think the clocks were teapots? No wonder I couldn't get it right!

Cornishclio · 20/03/2021 17:52

Just seen there is only 7 choc chips on cookie so I revise my answer to 10

HyacynthBucket · 20/03/2021 17:53

Sorry, should have said 50.

DadDadDad · 20/03/2021 17:54

@StormzyinaTCup

I think the follow on thread to this is:

“teachers excluded, how many people have ever needed to use BODMAS since they left school?” Wink

I'm an actuary, and it would cause problems if I didn't understand standard algebraic conventions - so I definitely use it. I'm sure there are engineers and many working in technical or scientific areas who use this too.

The clock on the bottom row says 2 o'clock (the others say 3) The bananas are single not pair The cookie has only 7 dots.

so 2 (o'clock) + 1 (banana) + 1x7(dots)
= 2 +1 + 1x7
= 3 + 7
= 10

Not read the posts.

Do you remember every single thing you were taught at school?

Yes, I do, Toes, but I was a very lackadaisical pupil and only learned 9 things. (Not all of them from the teachers)

 1. BODMAS (ironically Grin)

 2. the scoring system for a rugby match

 3. a shoal of piranha can skeletonise a cow in under 2 minutes*

 4. a swan can break your leg with its wing*

 5. if you swallow chewing gum it wraps round your heart and you die*

 6. "i" before "e", except after "c" - except when it isn't

 7. the Krebs cycle Hmm

 8. how to spell "lackadaisical" (an adjective that featured frequently in my school reports

 9. it isn't actually possible to die of boredom (but sometimes you wish you could)

*these three "facts" later proved to be false

UneFoisAuChalet · 20/03/2021 17:58

I was wrong
50 - I’m sticking with it

I didn't know what the hell the clocks were, stepping

I wondered if they were Ophelia's flowery garland ("Rosemary, that's for remembrance . . . )

frazzledasarock · 20/03/2021 18:02

Or 10 if you’re doing it correctly and BODMAS

WeatherwaxOn · 20/03/2021 18:03
@SchadenfreudePersonified - no problem. It does slightly bemuse me that some people must read the OP, ignore the fact that there are already 600 replies, one of which maybe might have given the answer, and confidently post their (often wrong) answer without explanation... Smile
I always just assume that the OP will keep keyboard silence until the last post on page 49, when there will be a drumroll and Grand Announcement, followed by a list of names which have earned a star.

That's how I would do it. Grin

Banterlope · 20/03/2021 18:04

60 based on the different positions of the clock hands

The answer is 10. Bodmas is the order in which you do the calculations. That order has been the same since the beginning of mathematical time, though may have been called different things over that time.
butterpuffed · 20/03/2021 18:19

I kept getting 28 but understand how it's 10 now as I didn't use the brackets correctly !

What's BODMAS ??
