@StormzyinaTCup

Pretty much everyone who writes software with any numbers in it I write scientific software, there's a few extra operator precedent rules but BODMAS is always part of them.

I'm sure there are a few careers out there (other than teachers) that use BODMAS but imagine these are in the minority. Mental note made not to go into scientific software programming, I will stick to accountancy Smile!!

Out of interest when you write software do you put the brackets in or not?

Please feel free to ignore me if yoh don't actually care - a perfectly reasonable position for an adult who has survived for many years without knowing or needing to know! But the teacher in me can't help it!

If you put 4+3*2 into excel, what comes up? 10, not 14. Because it follows the order of operations (what bodmas is a reminder of).

I teach year 6 and they love bodmas (because "this is so easy!"). Not meant as a sleight on anyone but it really is as simple as remembering that brackets and powers (squares/cubes etc.), multiplying and dividing in the middle and add and subtract go last.

Almost as easy as knowing the difference between sleight and slight. Hmm

Sorry, couldn't resist. Shock

Usually, but that's for human readability.

Thought I’d pop back. I came up with 10 first but didn’t read the whole thread and saw that answer had been suggested a few times and didn’t realise OP had said it was correct. Assuming it was wrong I was trying to “think outside the box” .

Just popping back to give 10 stars for those who used BODMAS and got 10 as the answer

Eh, no! Sorry Grin

The original OPs sum is assuming that everyone was taught/has remembered BODMAS. Given the varied answers on here it's quite clear that most people weren't taught or haven't remembered and there is nothing wrong with that, especially if they haven't needed to use it since they were 10 years old.

Thats my point, the brackets should have been included in the sum.

Anyway, as the saying goes, everyday is a school day😊 and it's Saturday evening so🍷

  • Thats my point, the brackets should have been included in the sum.

No, there's no 'should' about it. The brackets in my code are a courtesy not a necessity, this was a puzzle intended to trip people up if they weren't observant enough.

I really don't think it's ok for people not to know the very gap basic rules of arithmetic. BODMAS isn't remotely complicated maths, and getting simple calculations wrong can have serious consequences.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/03/2021 20:27

No idea where that 'gap' came from.

I did think about that for a bit! But decided that as I was posting on a forum rather than as part of my job that I couldn't be bothered to check it! I've never claimed to be good at homophones - that one's beyond the Year 6 curriculum Grin

Thanks, @solidaritea, for taking my pedantry in good spirit. I generally think it's an arsehole move to comment on poster's spelling or grammar, but in the context of putting people right on their maths, I felt you "deserved" it! Blush
