The answer accepted by the OP is that it should be:

2 + 1 + 1 x 7 = 10[/quote]
Thanks Dad

I hadn't realised that the answer had been given.

This will teach me to read the question properly! Grin

@Cowbells

People saying Bidmas/Bodmas has always been taught - how do you account for so many people coming up with answers like 28, 35 and 50? All wrong but all calculated left to right with no brackets.
Easy - it’s something they haven’t used so they’ve forgotten. Do you remember every single thing you were taught at school?
NoProblem123 · 20/03/2021 17:36

Aghh x first

2 plus 1 plus (1 x 7)

So 10 Grin

  1. But I hate BODMAS and always have to look it up to check.
DadDadDad · 20/03/2021 17:39

@SchadenfreudePersonified - no problem. It does slightly bemuse me that some people must read the OP, ignore the fact that there are already 600 replies, one of which maybe might have given the answer, and confidently post their (often wrong) answer without explanation... Smile

Gutted, worked it out at 10. But too late to the party to show off my maths skills Grin

thetwinkletoescollective · 20/03/2021 17:40

90

@DadDadDad

Upvote for *@HowManyToes*! Good to see a teacher who can set it out clearly and understands the pitfalls. (I'm an ex-maths teacher).
Thanks 😊 in the Scottish curriculum pupils study this at 2nd level which is usually mid to late primary, depending on ability of pupil. The amount of pupils who come to using BODMAS incorrectly drives me mental.

I actually collect puzzles like this for lesson starters. The discussion they generate is great! One similar to this (involving polygons) nearly started a riot in an S2 class a few years ago

StormzyinaTCup · 20/03/2021 17:45

I think the follow on thread to this is:

“teachers excluded, how many people have ever needed to use BODMAS since they left school?” Wink

thetwinkletoescollective · 20/03/2021 17:45

I don't get that:

10 +10+10 = 30
2+2+ 10 = 14
2+3+3 = 8
3+ 2+ 2 x 10 = 70

so 70 not 90 !! so how can it be 10? I don't get the explaination and what is BODMAS?!!!

MincePieandBaileys · 20/03/2021 17:48

Using Bodmas, do multiplication first - banana (2) x biscuit (10) = 20
Add lemon (3) to banana (2) = 5
Total 25 (I think)?

Why are people still discussing this when they've been told the answer is 10! ?
