My cat returned after a year missing

Not sure if anyone cares 😆 but wanted to share my good news!

Over a year ago out cat didn't come home, totally out of character. We walked the streets etc but a few days children were home shielding and then straight from that we went into lockdown. Everyday the children say how much they miss her still.

A few days ago we get a call saying
"are you missing a cat?"
Husband looks around at the cat we have, and answers no.
They say, we have you down as an owner of a cat we scanned.
My husband face was confused and asked "a grey cat"?
Yes they said.

We couldn't believe it. Like I said it's been over a year. Someone had seen her back on NOV but she hasn't let them near and it wasn't until last week they managed to get her and bring her to the vet, who scanned her.

She's settling in really well, she's a little nervous but she's currently sat on my husbands lap purring away. I keep pinching myself, I can't believe she's home!

@NebbiaZanzare

It's like delight and disbelief all mixed up in a happy befuddle, isn't it ? 😁

Trevor came in through a window and started kicking off for dinner.... 3 years after she went missing.

Took me about a month to stop grinning like a loon every time she marched up to me and demanded love/food/worship.

I'm so glad you got your prodigal moggy back 🤗

Awww that's lovely too, it's so funny isn't it. The person who has been feeding her said she wouldn't let her hear them but she's made huge fuss of us.

She's not eating a lot any she is sleeping a lot but it's been a draining year I think. Took her to our vet and they are happy with her, they also couldn't believe it, we carried on paying our pet plan with them for 6 months.

Is the now returned cat also a Birman? Just wondering if she had been taken? Or do you think she’s being living as a stray for a year?

Newnamefor2021 · 15/03/2021 19:17

@Easterbunnygettingready

Xpost. How old that she’s been living semi wild rather than come home. Cats are odd. Maybe she got lost?

DorisLessingsCat · 15/03/2021 19:19

YABU not to include a photo.

Motnight · 15/03/2021 19:19

That's a lovely ending 😍

Lindy2 · 15/03/2021 19:20

What happy news. I'm glad she is home again.

Is she in good condition? Do you think someone has been feeding her and giving her shelter or has she been a stray? It's been very cold if she's been outside by herself all this winter. I'm glad she has a warm bed again.

Newnamefor2021 · 15/03/2021 19:21

@Calmestofallthechickens

So happy for you and cat to be reunited! Do you think she remembers?

The same thing happened to me, got a phone call out of the blue after our cat had been missing for a year. Turned out he had moved into a (much bigger) house round the corner and throughly got his feet under the table. We went round to visit but ended up letting him stay at his new home (mainly because of a very attached 4 year old and it being two weeks before Christmas!)

Yes, she definitely seems to remember, she as a little unsure of the children on Friday (when we got her) but she's been making a huge fuss of us and knows where everything is (although she's not sure why the cat flap isn't working) 😆 she's clearly recognising the other cat but they always gave each other a wide birth 😆 she seems to know the house and her name.

Awww... cats know which side their bread is buttered don't they. Bittersweet for you I'm sure.

Oh, how wonderful! I read a story on here where a cat had been missing for years then one day just walked in through the cat flap like nothing had happened Grin.

ChronicallyCurious · 15/03/2021 19:24

Wonderful news OP. I’m so happy for you! I couldn’t imagine being without my baby for a day let alone a year 😂

Do you think she was living on the streets or someone had taken her in? Was she in a state?

Bluntpencil · 15/03/2021 19:25

That’s made me cry happy tears, thank you for sharing OP

StanfordPines · 15/03/2021 19:25

Yay. Oh happy news!

No, I think she's a moggy although people say she looks like a British short hair, she came to us a stray when she was a kitten. She turned up one day and we asked around the houses locally, took her to be scanned etc and advertised her as found on the facebook groups and put some posters up etc.

Eventually she has worms and so took her to vets to get treatment and they asked if we were going to keep her. So we said yes. She's lived with us for 3.5 years until last year.

It's weird she wouldn't let the people who found her near though, she's such a lovely cat, really affectionate, at least with us. Mine you the Birman is super affectionate and laid back but take him to the vets and he acts like he's possessed and I have to spent the time apologising to the vet. 😆

I’m so happy to hear your good news. Our cat went missing for 5 months and then we happened to walk past her in the street half a mile away from our house. She was half the size and had a air pellet lodged in her side.😢 We brought her home and she doesn’t stray now, bless her.

Yeah, it's really odd, she seemed so happy to see us though, I feel so terrible. She had good instincts but she didn't like roads, so would follow us as far as a road and then go back home.

I'm guessing she crossed a road and then got confused. I don't know. It's all very strange and odd, especially hearing how wild she was for the people who found her.

She's extremely matted, vet took some out but didn't want to over stress her. Her weight has increased but she used to hunt and eat entire rats, sounds like a few neighbours where she was found out food out for her but no one could get near. It's all very odd and strange.

We need a photo to really appreciate this amazing story 🤣

Newnamefor2021 · 15/03/2021 19:33

For those who asked. You can see how matted she still is and we are slowly taking them out but vet said not to stress her. Imagine quality poor as I cropped DH out.

Oh she’s lovely! Just like my old cat

Mimilamore · 15/03/2021 19:33

My daughter's cat was scanned and returned after escaping on the way to the vets on a busy London Road. This 18 months later.
He went missing as a half grown, skinny cat and came back a real bruiser!!

Sewgood · 15/03/2021 19:33

That is really lovely news OP. It's so important to keep your contact details updated with the chip companies. I do some shelter work and so many that come in are chipped but numbers are no longer valid so no way of contacting owners. Bet your kids are made up.

OddestSock · 15/03/2021 19:35

Our childminder's cat went missing a year ago. Then they had a call the other week to say someone had their cat. They went to get him (he was a few roads away), and he had clearly bern very well looked after, had completely filled out, fur shiny, etc.

He went missing again the other day. They got him back a day later after he was discovered in someone's garden. An elderly gentleman had been feeding him fish every single day for the last year. No wonder he didn't go home 🤣

Feel like I need a GPS collar but not sure they are safe. Any opinions?
