Apparently bootcut jeans are back for 2021. Yay! Is anyone wearing them, haven't seem many out and about. Can't decide whether to be brave or wait a bit...

@Maxellious

I'm sure I read this thread every year! Grin Never happened yet!

But tbh, everyone should just wear the shape that suits them best. Everyone will look better and it's not like jeans are a high fashion item. Or heaven forbid, wear different shapes depending on your mood! Grin

My Dad was the first person I recalled talking of boot cut jeans in the early 80s. He called them “over the boot” and got them from the US. According to him, they were created yonks ago so that cowboys could wear jeans.

I just bought some wide legged jeans. Love them. It’s so different from my usual skinny jeans. High waisted.

Everydaydragon · 27/02/2021 07:58

I've just had a bit Google and think a lot of the bootcut ones look so frumpy. These ones though 😍... although they're more flared then bootcut imo

I always wondered why they were called boot cut. Now I know. So long as Afon’s dad is right.

Etulosba · 27/02/2021 08:04

Bootcuts are 70’s style anyway aren’t they?

At least. I first remember them around 1978 or 9.

Didiusfalco · 27/02/2021 08:13

Finding all this talk of skinny jeans being flattering and un-frumpy weird. They literally cling to every curve. That means a few fitness fanatics and statuesque people look good in them and everyone else looks lumpy and bumpy. They also cut off unflatteringly at the ankle rather than elongating the leg. Doesn’t have to be bootleg, but most people look better in straight leg.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/02/2021 08:16

I've just cleared my old ones out to charity. If I wear them now I'll just look old fashioned rather than edgy. It's the old adage if you're old enough to remember them first time, you're too old for them second time around imo.

I'm old enough to remember most fashions twice. Some three times. What am I supposed to do?

Nonsense! It's only been about 20 years since bootcuts were last in - does that mean that anyone over the age of about 35 is past it and has to wear skinnies forever, whether they suit them or not? I think it's great to be able to take advantage of trends that you like coming back around. The length of time that skinny jeans hung around and refused to be replaced really baffled me - for years, you couldn't buy any other styles unless you went to M&S, where the bootcut never really went away! I would have thought people would be a bit fed up with them by now, even if they liked them in the first place.

Isn't that the point. They don't suit everybody, but not everybody has lumpy legs.

MangoFeverDream · 27/02/2021 08:59

Jeans are awful, stopped wearing them wears ago

itssquidstella · 27/02/2021 09:05

@Whatafabulousday thank you! They're Levi's 725 high rise boot cut.

fairydustandpixies · 27/02/2021 09:17

I've not stopped wearing them!

lunapeace · 27/02/2021 09:20

I think a full on flare is cool, tucked in t shirt and some converse or vans. Bootcuts.... I'm still not convinced. ASOS has 00s style jeans now, how funny, still seems far too recent.

samsmum2 · 27/02/2021 10:03

These are the amount of flare/fit I love. These ones are Deisel so v pricey but Tesco has a v similar pair atm for £20

I don't think frumpy at all...

I love skinnies because they are practical - they comfortably tuck into/don’t get in the way of boots (wellies, walking boots), and they don’t drag on the ground or soak up the rain. They show off the Dr Martens or converse I love to wear. Straight-leg make my legs look shapeless, and bootcut look too 2002 - a proper 70s flare looks cool though.

SomeRandomerOnBumsnet · 27/02/2021 16:05

@changi

Bootcuts are dreadful, frumpy 'mum' jeans that style forgot

With a six inch rise and paired with a short top, they don't exactly shout frumpy mum.

Grin sounds worse than frumpy mum to be honest
likeamillpond · 27/02/2021 16:13

This sunny week Ive seen a couple of young women wearing bootcut in faded denim.
They looked really nice!

I like them. They have a bit of a faded look which makes them look more up-to-date. The bootcutsthat people used to wear back In the day were darker and more prim looking.

I agree that flares look great But I think bootcut are good for those who want to ditch the skinnes but aren't brave enough (or think they're too old) for full-on flares. Bootcut's a good inbetween style.
AnExcellentWalker · 27/02/2021 16:27

I hate bootcut jeans. I always hated them. Much pefer slim leg / straight cut (not skinny), much more flattering. And I don't like low rise waists either. Cold, & too much risk of a muffin top & unflattering arse cleavage. I'm always paranoid if I sut down wearing them in public, can anyone see my bum.

I used to think I was old before my time. Can't say that any more... Grin

It's funny. I have a few pairs of straight jeans and always feel frumpy and old fashioned when I wear them. My bootcut jeans on the other hand, bought on an impulse just before lockdown, I feel good in. It's almost as if they're SO old fashioned that they're not? If that makes sense Confused

and I'm no spring chicken. (50s)
