What age did you or your dd start to shave legs?

My dd is 13 and is blissfully un bothered by them at present. Just wondering though what age you think they start.. Not that I'm going to suggest anything before she does

I missed adding she doesn’t shave

I've never heard of female electric shavers for legs!! Can anyone recommend one!
How do they differ from mens? Be handy if they had a bikini line attachment but otherwise aren't they just the same?
YouAintKingDingALing · 25/02/2021 20:54

I honestly will never understand or agree with parents who forbid it. It's bizarre. Why? Just why?

I was about 14. My mum forbade it tbh. I nicked my dad's razor and cut my shin almost to the bone, because I was picked on mercilessly at school for being pale with black hair. She still wouldn't let me. I really have never known why.

Englishgirl9 · 25/02/2021 21:06

I was 11 but my mum paid for me to get them waxed every 6 weeks and then I got an epilator when I was a little older. I'm now 30 and have very sparse and thin leg hairs that I epilate every few weeks or so and it's great! Would recommend going this route rather than having to shave every week.

@HeartShapedMoon

Can I ask, those women that don't shave their armpits and legs and have a partner or husband. Doesn't your husband comment or do you not care?

I know it's awful that boys will tease girls etc. I know it's wrong and I know girls shouldn't feel pressurised into doing it, but I just can't imagine feeling sexy and going to bed with my husband with that kind of excess body hair. And he would find it a massive turn off too. 🤷🏻‍♀️

However if I ever found myself single I wouldn't give a shit and I'd be as hirsute as can be!

Out of interest, is it that he has commented or expressed a strong preference about it or is it just that you imagine he would?

Because I think women can sometimes be their own worst enemies with things like this. I've got quite a few friends (and you'll see posts on here saying the same thing) who go to lots of effort with clothes and make up and shaving etc with the idea that it's what their husbands want, and then get pissed off when their husbands don't notice at all. They couldn't care less.

MeadowHay · 25/02/2021 21:44

I was about 13 or 14 iirc. Not sure how I lasted so long given I'm really hairy and plenty of the girls in my school shaved long before me, but nor was I the only hairy one at that age and it didn't bother me until then. I didn't speak to my DM about it and she never spoke to me about it either, we just shared a supply of hair removal cream that she had briefly spoken about to me when I was 12 and wanted to start removing my underarm hair, so I just started using that for my legs too. I eventually moved on to shaving with razors when I was about 15 or 16 as disliked hair removal cream due to the smell and how time consuming it was.

BurningBenches · 25/02/2021 22:16

@SpringisSpinning
I bought dd2 a Truesmooth by Babyliss it was £12. There's probably better but it's a start and it will do.

Maggie900 · 25/02/2021 22:18

I was 7, got called a gorilla by a boy in my class!!! Locked myself in the bathroom and cut my legs to shredded!

My mum had to shave them for me every week for a few years after that because they grew back so much worse.

Dd was 12 when she started shaving her legs.

Saisong · 25/02/2021 22:36

My DD is just 14 and has shown no interest. Despite being dark haired her legs hairs are fine and light so not very noticeable. She lives in shorts too so they are always out. Oddly enough she has no underarm hairs yet either. If she ever asks I'll fully support her needs.

I started when I was about 13 - I had dark leg hair, was probably conscious from school. Made a mess of them quite a few times. Now I'm almost 50 I have no leg hair whatsoever, it's completely vanished. Sadly my eyebrows are heading the same way!

misskick · 25/02/2021 22:37

My daughter was 9 when she wanted to remove the hair from her legs very thick and dark. we used veet cream rather than razors.

Vivenne · 25/02/2021 22:55

12 x

Ltdannygreen · 25/02/2021 23:02

Started at 13, remembering ripping my legs to shreds the first time 🤦🏼‍♀️ Became a pro by 15, think I’ve cut my self once since then and that’s on,y because my leg slipped whilst I was mid shave. I’m worried when my dd has to start she is very heavy handed

Duvetdweller · 25/02/2021 23:05

I let both of mine have their legs waxed from 11 thinking I’d save them from a life of shaving - after about 3 times they stated shaving and fake tanning and I’m shutting the bathroom door on them (15&13)

Boxtroll · 25/02/2021 23:21

I was 10 when I shaved my legs because other students would comment on them in PE. I used my dad's razor and he obviously saw hairs in his razor and thought who's been using this Grin

After that my mum got me my own razor to use!

Then in secondary school the comments about my hairy arms started :/

WilsonMilson · 25/02/2021 23:27

My mum was a bit of an idiot about things like this when I was growing up and I wasn’t allowed to do until I was 15. Ridiculous. She was also a bit weird about make up.

Norwaydidnthappen · 25/02/2021 23:32

I was 10. I did it because my best friend did and I wanted to fit in. My Mum used horrible disposable Bic razors so I cut my legs to shreds and still have scars to this day.

noblegreenk · 25/02/2021 23:49

I started at about 11 or 12 in secondary school. We had to wear those horrible athletics briefs for PE and I think most of the girls started shaving their legs around the same time. My dd is only 2 so she's a long way off.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 26/02/2021 05:54

DD 13 just cracked on as is her way and just started shaving once she felt she wanted too a year or so ago. She only told me yesterday that she shaves her arms which isn't something I've ever done. I bought her a safety razor to start off with but now she uses a normal Gillette razor.

user1468105798 · 26/02/2021 07:23

@MsFogi

I'm still waiting for the 15 and 13 yo dds to start. They have been provided with razors etc and shown how to use them but absolutely zero interest so far (despite a lot of dark hair)!
Although they have previously shaved legs and armpits my two girls (16 & 14) really don't care at the moment. Not sure if this is lockdown or winter apathy or a feminist stance but they have just laughed and said no when I asked if they were going to shave again!!
Runnerduck34 · 26/02/2021 12:19

I was 11or 12, first year of secondary school but I have fair skin and dark brown hair so hair was very obvious, always envious of people with fair fine hair on their arms and legs!
My DDs probably started later than me around age of 13 .
No right or wrong time, just whenever they feel they want to, its can be more of an issue for girls with dark hair/ fair skin

Whengodwasarabbit · 26/02/2021 13:11

I was about 12. I wasn’t bought razors so I used my dads bic orange cheap ones in the bath. One day my shin was really itchy, and being 12 I pressed down really hard over and over on my leg to relieve it itching. It was only when I saw blood I panicked. When I looked there were peelings of skin!! It healed fine though 🤣

PlinkPlink · 26/02/2021 14:43

Underarms age 9 or 10... a boy in my class pointed out I had hair and I grew really self conscious.

Legs 10 or 11. I remember feeling constantly paranoid if my legs weren't smooth enough in case a boy touched them.

I look back on that and feel so sad for my young self. I hope DD doesn't feel that way... ever...

SpringisSpinning · 26/02/2021 16:21

Being hair free is chicken and egg.. We are supposed to be from a media.. Many European countries don't do underarm hair.

We expect it because we all do it.
