What age did you or your dd start to shave legs?

My dd is 13 and is blissfully un bothered by them at present. Just wondering though what age you think they start.. Not that I'm going to suggest anything before she does

I was 10 or 11. Mum got me and sis a ladyshave so no worries about razors.

Gunpowder · 25/02/2021 07:36

I think I was 11 or 12. My leg hair isn’t very dark and I will always be grateful to one of my mum’s friends who told me not to bother shaving above my knees as the hair there is much finer and less noticeable.

DM never talked to me about it at all really.

Seasidemumma77 · 25/02/2021 07:38

I started shaving my legs when I started secondary school, my DD started puberty at 9yrs old and I helped her remove the leg hairs as they were distressing her.

@SexyGiraffe

Age 12 after a boy commented on them at a party. What a familiar story this seems to be, based on this thread!
Yep, there’s definitely a theme of boys having been brought up thinking it’s acceptable to comment on girls’ bodies. I complained to the school when one commented several times on DD’s appearance and I was pleased that they acted on it.

DD is friends with him now but DP and I judge the fuck out of his shitty parents.

TheGriffle · 25/02/2021 07:52

I was about 11ish I think. My mum had bought me a dress to wear and I came out dressed in tights (middle of summer) as I hated the hair. After an argument she let me shave them.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 25/02/2021 07:59

DD(11) keeps moaning about hers. I try to play it down and show her I'm quite happy to go swimming/in shorts with hairy legs, but ultimately it is her body and I'm probably going to have to help her soon. She started puberty at 10 and is very conscious of it!
Torn between veet and shaving, I am not going to wax her as I'd probably burn at least one of us!

StillGoingToWork · 25/02/2021 08:02

My one is 14 and refuses to on a feminist principle. Hmm I have given her an electric shaver but she doesn't use it. 🤷‍♀️ I can't force her! Smile

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 25/02/2021 08:03

@Lochmorlich

If your dd does decide to remove her leg hair you would be doing her an enormous favour by encouraging waxing rather than shaving.
A better favour is to explain the range of options and let her try them/choose the ones she prefers.
Muskox · 25/02/2021 08:05

I can't remember how old I was. DD is 13 and has recently shaved hers for the first time.

Muskox · 25/02/2021 08:05

StillGoingToWork good for her!

JemimaTiggywinkle · 25/02/2021 08:08

11 or 12... basically as soon as it would be noticeable in the PE changing room at secondary school.

MagdasMadHouse · 25/02/2021 08:16

I was 11

Greygreenblue · 25/02/2021 08:24

I was 12 and very self conscious about them. It felt like all the other girls already were. My mother wanted me to wait until I was 13. She didn’t specifically forbid it though so after a little while more of feeling self conscious about it I did it anyway. I don’t recall her ever saying another word about it.

When I was about 14 a dermatologist wanted me to stop shaving and get waxed instead. Spoiler alert, it did nothing to improve the rash on my legs and my hair is so fine even after 2 months it wasn’t waxable. But it was noticeable enough for a boy at school to comment. I immediate resumed shaving... a different dermatologist eventually solved it and it had nothing to do with shaving.

ZombeaArthur · 25/02/2021 08:25

On holiday when I was 11, my cousin told me it was time to start shaving my legs. My Mum has no interest in personal care beyond washing really so gave me no guidance. Like many on this thread I used a mans razor and cut myself to ribbons. Took me ages to figure out how to do it properly.

Now I have girls, I plan to keep a simple electric razor for them to use when they’re ready. I can’t imagine trying to dictate what they do with their own body hair.

bendmeoverbackwards · 25/02/2021 08:46

I’ve got 3 teen dds, they all prefer to remove leg and underarm hair.

I’ve always discouraged shaving though, it’s high maintenance doing it every day and you get stubble.

They do a mixture of hair removing cream and professional waxing (obs not currently!). I’ve also invested in a Phillips Lumea for all of us so hopefully it will be gone for eventually.

Beautiful3 · 25/02/2021 08:51

I was 12, my daughter started at 11.

DoTheNextRightThing · 25/02/2021 08:58
  1. I was getting made fun off in PE. We were only allowed to wear shorts, so no way of hiding it.
HeartShapedMoon · 25/02/2021 09:01

I was 11 in the summer holidays before starting secondary school. I was at a village fete on a bouncy castle and a boy I liked bounced down near my legs and exclaimed what gorilla legs I had. I was mortified.

Feel sad for those that "weren't allowed to shave". How awful! 🥺

HunterHearstHelmsley · 25/02/2021 09:03

I was 10. After some prick commented on my legs being hairy in assembly.

HeartShapedMoon · 25/02/2021 09:05

I did try waxing all through my teens but having to grow it in between was awful and I couldn't do anything spontaneous due to leg hair issues so went back to shaving and have done ever since apart from before holidays.

SpringisSpinning · 25/02/2021 09:10

@SpringisSpinning

I am on the cusp of buying a braun one.

I dont think any girl should be made to feel like she has too and saying that she does is adding to the pressure on women - young girls from their mums which is why I feel this is such a sensitive subject. I have no qualms whatsoever about her starting to shave or veet etc....I also dont want to make her feel like she has too.

Dd was 12. I can't remember that far back for myself Grin.

SpringisSpinning · 25/02/2021 09:16

Heart its far more awful that boys think its OK to say this stuff....

SpringisSpinning · 25/02/2021 09:17
  • How long does hair removing cream last though? Its not getting the root so surely its the same grow back time as shaving

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 25/02/2021 09:19

I was 12. I think I just done it in the bath one day then proudly showed my mum. I remember sitting on the stairs showing her Grin. I think I had a few cuts right enough!
