Toxic work environment for Buffy actors

www.buzzfeednews.com/article/davidmack/buffy-angel-cordelia-charisma-carpenter-joss-whedon. Another Hollywood producer using his role to be an abusive prick. When will still stop and why did it take someone else to speak out for others to follow.

The OC did come later though, and as SMG put her foot down series 2/3 onwards the short skirts for the most part vanished. I like to think Btvs set the standard for the likes of the oc.

Cringingly I spent right up to my late teens dressing like Buffy series 1.
Series 5,6,7 contain some wearable looks even for us more d thirtyish though. Especially the coats. Gosh Buff had so many coats.

TheBuffster · 14/02/2021 21:42

@Teardrop2021 literally posting my embarrassing fashion faux Pas.

Thereby securing my space in the geek hall of fame.

It's a little disappointing that Antony Stewart Head has come out saying he didn't notice anything. Which means either he didn't notice because it didn't affect him, he did notice but normalised it or he didn't notice because it was hidden from him

I thought he got it right, tbh. He says he should have seen it, and regrets he didn’t. He doesn’t deny it, and is supportive.

Thing with many abusers like this is they play favourites to keep those they don’t like in line. I see it in sport all the time. Pick one or two golden ones, treat them well. Then say to the others if you worked as hard as them, or obeyed me like they do, you’d get the good treatment too. Make it their fault. It also means they’ll do anything to get in the good books, so it’s a really good way to manipulate people.

It often means the golden ones don’t see that the others aren’t being treated as well, and they will stick up for the abuser and deny anything went on. So I give ASH credit for that.

But my point being that should never had happened in the first place looking at those photos no actress should have been put in that position to wear those dresses the length of them is disgraceful especially given that she was required to actually move in them and perform fight scene and the poor stunt doubles, the aim was to over sexualized her a 16 year old character its actually pretty grim to think about it.

OP posts:
TheBuffster · 14/02/2021 21:52

Yes I know, I agree (just pointing out the outfits had a cultural impact and some of us looked like idiots as a consequence)
Buffy and sexualisation has parallels to Britney spears, which was happening at the same time.
The difference is SMG used her fame as a reason to put her foot down, whereas Britney has never been allowed to make her own decisions.

The way the Buffy wardrobe evolved really is feminism in motion as the actors got braver and showed agency.

Don't know whose idea series 3 fringe was though. Disaster.

WhereDoMyBluebirdsFly · 14/02/2021 22:08

Agree that the later outfits were much more wearable. I still love this one from Once More With Feeling. Anya had some great clothes too.

I'm glad that SMG felt empowered enough to refuse to wear tiny skirts anymore after the first season. She was the star though so JW probably couldn't threaten to fire her, unlike the 'second string' actors like Charisma and Amber Benson.

That fringe is criminal.

TheBuffster · 14/02/2021 22:12

The season 6 outfits are very symbolic. All red, black and sadness.

Yeah, Cordy was dressed very strangely right up to her moving to LA then they were variable.
I love 80% at least of the Buffy wardrobe.
Everything Willow ever wore was awful though.

ItsJackieWeaverBitch · 14/02/2021 23:53

@ItsJackieWeaverBitch wow what a smart girl and a credit to you.
It probably took about the 100th watching for me

Thank you @TheBuffster Smile

I agree with Buffy’s skirts being really short in the first season btw. I never gave it much thought when I was a teenager myself- my skirts were probably about as short. I’m glad SMG voiced that she felt uncomfortable and the clothes were changed a bit. She’s always seemed like someone who doesn’t put up with crap from people- good for her. Unfortunately women like that get a reputation for being “divas” and “difficult” in a way that men just don’t. I love the series- still watch Buffy loads and that won’t change but there’s a lot that bothers me- Spike attempting to rape Buffy was upsetting but even more so that it was brushed under the carpet by the following season and forgotten about. Xander constantly slut shaming Cordelia even after they start dating. Xander being weirdly possessive over Willow dating Oz even though Xander didn’t want to date her himself. Xander simply existing and generally being a rude arsehole...

picklemewalnuts · 15/02/2021 07:34

It's difficult though- is he just a reflection of how things work in real life? Immature boy being an arsehole to women, even his friends- forgiven because he's an immature boy and we hope he'll grow up.

TheBuffster · 15/02/2021 13:02

I think the problem with Xander isn't that he is Immature boy being an arsehole to women it's the way the other characters, and the series in general signpost that he is a nice guy. It's his status as being a nice guy when he really isn't one.

For example, Spike was rightly ostracized when he tried to rape Buffy, but Xander tried to rape Buffy in The Pack. Ok, he was possessed by a hyena, but then Spike is possessed by a demon.

When Xander cheats on Cordelia he makes one lousy attempt to talk to her then states,he is done with feeling bad, without evet showing regret for his actions. Regret getting caught, yes. Buffy and Willow then often join in the Cordelia bashing, which makes no sense because everyone is tiptoeing around Oz because Willow is in the doghouse.

His lie was intended to literally kill a souled angel- and put Buffy at risk too because she was ignorant of another card up her sleeve (Stallings till the curse worked)

His it's Buffy's fault Riley cheated speech grr.

He summons a demon for lols but no one mentions the fact people die as a consequence (Once more with feeling) whereas Tara gets a telling off for casting a spell with consequences that nearly kill people. Ditto Willow ( though this does culminate in skinning a man so I will let it slide)

Anytime he makes a remotely moral decision it's treated like a huge deal (not taping love spelled Buffy, buying Cordy her prom dress)

I could write an essay on it lol!

Binglebong · 15/02/2021 14:05

I thought Dawn summoned the demon is Once Mire With Feeling? Not that it takes away from your post, just confused.

StrangerHereMyself · 15/02/2021 14:07

No, Xander summoned the demon and then Dawn stole the amulet when he left it lying around. Amazingly implausible that he’d have done that actually, but it’s just a minor plot hole.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/02/2021 18:55

David Boreanaz has finally spoken up to tell CC that he is there for her to listen and support her, and that he's proud of her. Interestingly, her reply to him thanked him for the private support he's been giving her since last Wednesday.

Still nothing from Alyson Hannigan...is she the only female regular from the show not to speak out now? Buffy, Faith, Tara, Anya, Dawn, Glory have all spoken up.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/02/2021 18:57

As has Julie Benz (Darla).

FoxyTheFox · 15/02/2021 19:02

Still nothing from Alyson Hannigan...is she the only female regular from the show not to speak out now

Yes but as posted upthread, she's contracted to Disney right now so will be under various social media embargoes.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/02/2021 19:04

And Marti Noxon 😱

TheBuffster · 15/02/2021 20:02

The trio have issued statements.

www.google.com/amp/s/indiemacuser.co.uk/2021/02/14/buffy-the-vampire-slayer-star-julie-benz-responds-to-latest-joss-whedon-allegations/amp/

Nothing from Kristine Sutherland (Joyce) Drusilla, Jenny Calandar or Harmony that I know of. Those would be the other regulars.

NotYourReindeer · 15/02/2021 20:37

Alyson Hannigan is in a pickle now. If she does say anything will it be taken as genuine because it's taken her so long to comment? If she's close to JW (or was close to him) will she say anything at all. I do find it odd, even with her work commitments, that her people haven't advised her to show some kind of solidarity .

TheBuffster · 15/02/2021 20:45

I imagine Alyson will be very, very careful to say nothing considering how Gina Carano's Disney contract played out.

I can't say I blame her. Disney are ruthless.

Teardrop2021 · 16/02/2021 09:30

Anyone seen Nicholas Brandon's video. He definitely went down the rabbit hole after buffy ended.

Trigger warning, details of domestic violence

I don't think Nicholas Brendon is going to denounce JW with his own history of domestic violence.

Taken from the link below:

The victim, identified only as "Jane Doe" in court documents, opted to address the court after Brendon's plea deal was accepted by Superior Court Judge Richard Oberholzer, where she held back tears as she recounted a relationship allegedly riddled with physical and emotional abuse.

"When somebody holds a knife to your throat, it changes you as a person, and it changes you forever" she said. "I can never erase the pictures in my mind of being strangled and thrown across the room, or being covered in bruises, bite marks and scratches, all because I tried to care for someone."

TheBuffster · 16/02/2021 15:03

Yes, knew he was a bit of a wrong one. It'd be obviously rather hypocritical for him to issue a statement.

Teardrop2021 · 16/02/2021 18:33

I know David refused to have Nicholas at the reunion because of his previous violent behaviour sarah doesn't speak to him not sure about the other. I wonder what his brother does or think his brother has lead a similar live. When you look at him as zander you wouldn't think what darkness he was hiding.
