Wardrobes DH ICU

Just thought I’d create a new thread. To help us to keep track of what’s happened.

My DH was ventilated last week. We’ve had two calls to see him due to him being very close to death. He isn’t stable but he is still alive at the moment. All we can do is wait.

I’m not going to lie, I’m not coping at all. My mum has moved in to help me cope with daily life. We’ve spoken with the children and they know how serious it is. They are also struggling now with the youngest stepping back from schooling when she needs to.

I can’t think ahead. Just usually about the hour or two that we’re living in. It’s very surreal. And incredibly difficult. Doctors are very realistic about prognosis and survival, which is really hard to hear.

I am incredibly grateful for all the support we’ve had as a family. MN is a remarkable place at times.

@groovinpeanut - Flowers my heart goes out to you and your family and I’m so sorry for the loss of your DH, message me anytime X

@intheshadowofthemushroomcloud - Flowers for all your support and messages.

I have had several messages from other mnetters who don’t have their own threads but who are also experiencing this living hell Flowers it’s a horrible journey and we don’t know how it will end but all we can do is hope/pray for a better outcome.

I haven’t always had the energy to post, too fearful of jinxing things and generally the last few days have been very raw and intense. But I’ve read every message and I’m so grateful of the support.

This sounds tentatively positive at least. Obviously no cause for celebration, but it is cause for hope. I so hope that he continues to remain stable and recover without too many up and downs. One day at a time. So many of us are here with you following your journey. Well done to your lovely mum too for supporting you! X

Another update- DH has been relatively stable for the last couple of days. This means they've been concentrating on slowing reducing support for his blood pressure and other medications.

They have also chipped away at his oxygen support so he is down to 50%. They are now proposing at lifting his sedation support so they can switch his ventilator to cpap settings - so he will remain ventilated and its the same machine but he will be breathing on his own but still with oxygen support.

They have said that he isn't coping well when they lift the sedation - he gets very agitated so it may be a few days while they work the drug combos out to keep him calm enough to try switching the settings. They have also warned me that he may not cope so might need to go back onto the ventilator settings. It won't be more invasive because its settings on the machine.

It's definitely good news though!!

I also want to shout out to all of the lovely women whose husbands have been through this and haven't recovered. I've been messaged by several of them, and all of them were so kind and lovely, despite their own personal suffering. You are all in my thoughts daily and my heart goes out to you Flowers

RalphtheMouth · 28/01/2021 14:30

Great news, hope he continues to improve

ChasingRainbows19 · 28/01/2021 14:32

Positive update @Wardrobes123 I’d imagine they are used to some patients being agitated when trying to reduce sedation. My mum was bad and each time they tried she was the same so in the end they used a tracheostomy and did it super super slow. It worked.
