Sitting here waiting for the man to repair my heating and I thought I’d start a new book. It’s an out of print one from the 1970s that I’d been searching for ages. I picked it up and flipped through to find a rather surprising bookmark. I’ll post it a bit later just to keep you all guessing. 😀

I wonder though, have you ever flipped through a book and found something odd, surprising, intriguing or unexpected? I would love to hear about it. 🙂

A stocking?

redastherose · 12/01/2021 15:31

Haven't read the whole thread yet but my guess is a Dick Pic!

TremoloGreen · 12/01/2021 15:32

A saucy photo?

From back in the days when you had to take your saucy photos to be developed at Boots...

Just a random thought that letter you found in second hand book from Canadian prime minister could be possible be of historical significance to a museum of some kind.??😕
Could be valued too somewhere[/quote]
It was about twenty years ago, and yes, it's now in the Mackenzie-King museum!

"This is as exciting as it gets here too. Until the heating man arrives..."

What exciting thing is going to be happening then?Shock

Decades ago at a car boot I found a rare first edition book. It was in pretty good condition and was overjoyed. In it was a love letter from a woman to another; given the time it was printed in and obvious age of the letters such a relationship was unthinkable. The letter was heartbreaking. I felt dreadful after for reading it (there's no excuse, it was pretty clear what it was from the beginning) and burnt it.

draughtycatflap · 12/01/2021 15:36

@parietal

what was the book?
I’m back now. He’s taking ages to fix my heating. There is banging and everything. I hope he can fix it. Even the cat is shivering.

@parietal That was my second clue that I already answered in a previous post. You will have to dig for it Mon ami! 🙂

Right I’m going to catch up on this thread and will reply soon to all my fabulous sleuthers! 🕵️‍♀️🕵🏻‍♂️🕵️‍♀️

I once helped DSibling give the flat they shared with their DP a very good spring clean ahead of the arrival of the MIL (flat belonged to her). I was dusting a book and a load of £50 notes fell out from the pages. Further investigation showed that all the series of hardbacks on the shelf contained the equivalent. The MIL had lived in various war-torn countries where you might need to leave very quickly for safety, so kept a ready supply of cash to hand wherever she had a home!

@LaMarschallin

Is it a copy of the photograph of PM in a bubble bath wearing only her tiara?
My brain misinterpreted PM as prime minister. That is not an image I needed in my head.
DavidBowiesEyeMakeUpArtist · 12/01/2021 15:39

A joint? Someone said a cigarette early doors and you've not commented on that....is a joint considered racy?!

WinterIsGone · 12/01/2021 15:40

You will have to dig for it Mon ami!
Following the other guesses, is that a subtle hint for a French letter...???

MedusasBadHairDay · 12/01/2021 15:43

Wait.. the book is a clue? After a quick Google I'm going with flyer for a gay club

Oh my god - I'm sooo sorry Shock
Just relieved this forum is anonymous and you can't send me the therapist's bills.

Could have been worse, though: I could have mentioned a loofah breaking through the bubbles... Envy

@Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese

So if someone in the first 10 was close and it could be considered raunchy... Is it a letter? Is it a page from a smutty (I hate that word) novel? A picture, suggestive but not naughty?
Well done on your outstanding little grey cells Mon ami.

No.
No.
CLOSE!

JustAPassingFashion · 12/01/2021 15:46

@IaltagDhubh I thought it was prime minister too.... what is it? 😂

ItsALovelyDayToday · 12/01/2021 15:46

Pubes.

draughtycatflap · 12/01/2021 15:46

@AgainstTheCurrent

Ohh I reckon something to do with Princess Margaret then? In the first 10 posters and considered raunchy.

I really should be working though and actually went back to first page to count down the posts - I really hope your heating engineer gets a move on, I have a meeting at 4 Grin

Laughing at all the Princess Margaret posts! 😂

I once found a small card (index card size) in a second hand book with the following typed on it (I have kept it in the book I found it in)

President
Lord Lieutentant
Deputy Lord Mayor
Bishop Commissary
Chairman of something or other (this is handwritten, but also crossed out
Distinguished Guests
Ladies & Gentlemen

It's probably a prompt card for an after dinner speech, but all the names that have been crossed out, makes me wonder if it's a list of people to be bumped off...

holyshitdude · 12/01/2021 15:47

Your username was my response to your suggestion!

@Tormundsbeard

I found a dead fly in a book, not sure if it was a bookmark though..
I once opened another second hand book that I’d ordered and there was a strange grub like creature crawling along the page. Bleurgh!
