How to you "visualise" a year?

desperatetostaypositive · 02/01/2021 18:10

I was talking to dh about how I picture a year in my mind, and he doesn't do this. His year is just one month after another in a straight line.
Mine is a circle (I'll try and attach a picture)

The whole bottom edge is the summer holidays and the top Christmas. It's completely disproportionate to the timescale! I've always viewed my years in my minds eye like this.

Anyone else?

This is fascinating!

I see it as an anti-clockwise slightly wobbly loop. January is at number six. For some reason the circle gets a bit wiggly in August!

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 02/01/2021 19:56

Mine is v similar to yours OP, it's a giant disc which goes anti-clockwise like yours.

I don't know if this is the same, but I visualise that I'm walking on it. Each month also has a colour (eg June is pale yellow, July darker yellow, august orange, September burnt orange etc, round to December (v dark brown) - now we're in dark blue for Jan).

My DM is exactly the same, but my DH and his family think we're bonkers!

MySaladDays75 · 02/01/2021 19:57

Ooo this is interesting! OP mine is the same as yours but clockwise so Jan where your December is. Have tried to explain to my husband and he thinks I’m barking! 😂

Oblomov20 · 02/01/2021 19:57

No. I never visualise a year. Why would I need to? Let alone in any way you see it, or a straight line or any way.

desperatetostaypositive · 02/01/2021 19:57

I've been on Mumsnet a very long time (since the first year I'm that old Grin) and I've never enjoyed such fab responses to a thread. I really have learnt loads and never knew it was an actual thing, this visualisation.

In response to a pp, yes, days of the week are odd or even (but not weekends!)

Oh my gosh, I thought it was just me!

It's a definite circle segmented into 12. But it's not quite equal because on mine it's August at the top, opposite December at the bottom. Autumn months are brown/orange and then into Nov-Feb where it's icy blue. I see it as going upwards towards summer and downwards towards winter.

I think there was a calendar like this in school when I was 4 or 5 which has made me imagine it like this.

Sarahandduck18 · 02/01/2021 20:04

I still think of it as a school/academic year in a horseshoe from September to June.

Springfern · 02/01/2021 20:05

In a parallellagram, with a picture of the Welsh flag in the background

Fozzleyplum · 02/01/2021 20:09

I see it as a circle running anti-clockwise, but situated in my parents' house and garden (they had then house before I was born, so this image was formed when I was a very young child). Early November to about the first week of March are in the house, then out to the garden for the rest of the year. I see numbers as a straight line from their gate and up the road, crossing over and going down a different road at 20, then again at 100.

RoseHarper · 02/01/2021 20:13

Year in a straight line, left to right and I kind of think of the month number rather than the name? So April, 4th along, june at no6 etc. Days of the week, mon/wed/fri I kind of think of as hard spiky days, and Tue/Thu are softer...the weekends have less significance. No idea why that is.

DasPepe · 02/01/2021 20:14

I also have colours for days of the week @couldthisbeit

What always confuses people is that Saturdays are white and Sundays are green.

HarrietPotterska · 02/01/2021 20:18

Yours but inverse!

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 02/01/2021 20:21

Like this.
I'm a bit stunned that people are seeing December at the top. It's definitely at the bottom! 😆

RedLimoncello · 02/01/2021 20:22

@1lbperweek yes I'm the same- M/W/F are the odd days and Tues/Thurs are even.

My year is a clock with January at 1 o'clock and December at 12.

Also, this is the coolest thread ever and I can't believe not everyone visualises the year like I do! Talk about living in our own bubblesGrin

doctorhamster · 02/01/2021 20:26

Straight line here. Starting with January right in front of me and the other months in a straight line behind it stretching into the distance.

MyCatTibby · 02/01/2021 20:27

This is Spatial Sequence Synesthesia! I have this and only heard of the word Synesthesia last year! I thought everyone saw days of the week, months and years as I do. My days of the week looks similar to hopscotch with Saturday and Sunday larger than weekdays and Wednesdays larger than the other weekdays but not as large as the weekends. The year is a large oval floating in space with each month a different segment going clockwise and I stand on whatever month it is. Now it's January I can see the whole year ahead of me. I can look back to last year, but I can 'hop' onto any month and see the year in a different perspective. Each month is a different shade, January is cold and light, summer months are pastels, October is white, November is a dark forest green and December is very "bright". My decades float back in space like a long windy ribbon with years and decades split into segments. I've seen this my whole life and thought everyone else saw days/months/years like this too. It was astonishing to find out not everyone visualises time like this but there are a few of us!!

kitschplease · 02/01/2021 20:28

Straight line in chunks of 3

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 02/01/2021 20:31

@MyCatTibby
Yes I see the decades like that too and the days of the week.

My week always has a weekend at each end which is bigger and the week has a curve where Wednesday is in the middle of it.

Whatthebloodyell · 02/01/2021 20:32

Oh yes as a circle. But clockwise, with jan at number 1 December at number 12and September in bold

ilikefemalesnow · 02/01/2021 20:33

Anyone else not understand a word of this thread?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 02/01/2021 20:35

In a line from top top to bottom, with January at the top. I don't visualise months though, I see it as seasons and events, so birthdays, Easter, Halloween, Christmas, new year. I also picture things that happen at these times, and the weather (well the weather we are supposed to have 😂 not the weather we actually get)

christmasathomeagain · 02/01/2021 20:39

I have never really thought of it but I visualise Jan to jun in a vertical line and then jul to dec next to it. A game of two halves you might say 😂

Meredithgrey1 · 02/01/2021 20:39

yes I'm the same- M/W/F are the odd days and Tues/Thurs are even.

No no no, you’ve got it all wrong! M/W/F are even days, Tues and Thurs are odd!

Tbh I can’t even explain this to myself, for me the week starts on a Monday so why I see that as an even day is beyond me. It definitely is though.

MyCatTibby · 02/01/2021 20:41

@Sawyersfishbiscuits Yes!! My weeks always have a weekend at either end but no curve at Wednesday! Smile

1lbperweek · 02/01/2021 20:42

How could they EVER be the even days? Madness!!!!
