Cleaner wants internet access - WWYD

BlankProfile · 06/11/2020 00:06

We have had our cleaner for several years. She's honest, reliable and does a reasonable job.
Our internet password is on the back of the box and at some point she has seen this and used it to sign into our network. I found out today because we have recently changed our password and she asked me for the new one, obviously forgetting she had never asked me for the password in the first place.
It's annoyed me, but we have unlimited data and in the time she's been using it, it's never caused a problem.
Should I give her the new password?

I'm just wondering what the norm is - do those of you with cleaners give them the internet password?

Absolutely.

HillaryWhitney · 06/11/2020 17:26

Just out of interest - does anybody have any statistics on how many people in England in 2019-20 have been arrested by the police due to other people downloading inappropriate content while using their WIFI?

I'm sure a FOI request would yield the result ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NONE 😂

MN you've been making be laugh for a decade. This place will never get old 🤣

PuppyMonkey · 06/11/2020 17:28

See, I reckon those of us who think this is a bit CF are from the days when the internet used to be all “dial up” with the funny squeaky beeps and you paid extra every time you sent and received your emails. Grin

It’s hard to get used to the idea it’s all free and unlimited these days. Forgive us.

Bluntness100 · 06/11/2020 17:29

Can we make it more specific? In the history of the internet globally, how many folks have been arrested because their cleaner was using their WiFi to download criminal content whilst pretending to work.

Answer, absolutely fucking none.😂

Nicknacky · 06/11/2020 17:30

HilaryWhitney Again another poster who doesn’t have a clue what they are talking about.

No one has mentioned arrests. Do you actually have a clue as to how people who have accessed indecent images of children are traced?

Bluntness100 · 06/11/2020 17:31

Don’t worry, she knows it’s always the cleaner, who does it whilst pretending to mop the kitchen floor. 😂

BananaFlavouredPancakes · 06/11/2020 17:50

I think it's an age thing since you say she's 20 years younger. My friend group (in our 30's) wouldn't think twice about swapping passwords and if someone came into my house that had a need for it, I wouldn't think anything of it. She probably listens to Spotify or something when she's cleaning so it would make sense to use WiFi for that. I can understand from your POV that you'd have liked her to ask in the first place though.

YouKidsIsCrazy · 06/11/2020 17:55

I give anyone who wants it internet password. Probably cos I actually understand internet security and have sensible protections in place, so its not an issue.

Can only assume those who think its crazy to share don't actually get any of it

Nicknacky · 06/11/2020 18:03

What protections do you have in place?

Bluntness100 · 06/11/2020 18:06

Why would you possibly habe someone in the position of trust cleaning your house if your the sort who thinks they are googling how to make a bomb or child abuse whilst dusting your work surfaces.😃

BlankProfile · 06/11/2020 18:29

Wow. This has turned into a bun fight.

But can I just point out I have never suggested that she is doing any of the nasty stuff being thrown about here. All I have said about her is that she is honest and reliable. And that I am mildly annoyed by the fact she had taken our internet password without mentioning it.

No! My cleaner cleans. Full stop.Radio 4 is on and I tell her to turn it off if it's annoying her, and that's it.

Bluntness100 · 06/11/2020 19:00

She’s not allowed to use her WhatsApp Hmm

This is a breach of trust.

Sack her.

Plenty of other people out there to employ.

Simplyunacceptable · 06/11/2020 19:55

Sack her because she looked at your wifi box without asking? WTAF.

I really don’t care about people using my wifi in my home, a cleaner would be no exception.

MaelyssQ · 06/11/2020 20:53

Our WiFi password is on a chalkboard in the kitchen visible to all and sundry - visiting friends and family are more than welcome to use it. If I had household staff (ah if only!!) then they, too, would be welcome to use it.

Hangingover · 07/11/2020 08:24

This thread is peak MN hysteria Grin

Did you expect anything else? Seriosy?
The post has got everything get MNers frothing!
😂😂😂😂

Florencemattell · 07/11/2020 16:08

What is the phone signal like for her network ? I live/work in a rural area. Without the internet I wouldn’t be able to contact anyone on my mobile. If she has small children could that be a concern? Do you have a landline number you could give her? I know landlines are rare now days.

lucie82 · 07/11/2020 17:22

Just give her the password! I listen to music when I’m cleaning!

Aridane · 07/11/2020 17:34

@TheoriginalLEM

Why does she need it though?
The same everyone else does, I assume - data for her phone
Thewordgame · 07/11/2020 17:35

Your house, your wifi, your password. She should have asked you and not been sneaky and found the password and helped herself. Sorry but it’s the way it was done- not the use of the wifi. I would happily give my password if my cleaner asked but would be a bit Hmm if she found it and used it without asking.

I suppose you think she’s stealing electricity is she charges her phone

Whenlifegivesyoulimoncello · 07/11/2020 17:40

Next thing she’ll be “stealing water” from your tap, or worse yet - using your electricity to boil the kettle.

I never say this but ... get a grip. She probably wants to either listen to the radio or a podcast. Quite a normal thing to do. Maybe she likes to catch up on the archers while ironing.
