Cleaner wants internet access - WWYD

BlankProfile · 06/11/2020 00:06

We have had our cleaner for several years. She's honest, reliable and does a reasonable job.
Our internet password is on the back of the box and at some point she has seen this and used it to sign into our network. I found out today because we have recently changed our password and she asked me for the new one, obviously forgetting she had never asked me for the password in the first place.
It's annoyed me, but we have unlimited data and in the time she's been using it, it's never caused a problem.
Should I give her the new password?

OP - Does the cleaner have keys to your home?

FabbyChix · 09/11/2020 12:00

Why would she need it she is at yours to work not browse the internet.

MyDingALingADingDong · 09/11/2020 12:02

There are plenty of reasons, if you can't work them out for yourself, at least rtft

Florencemattell · 09/11/2020 12:11

Agree she should have asked. Have you asked her why she needs it? Please answer this question. Does she have no phone signal and need the internet for contact in an emergency?
I’m a nanny all the cleaners I have encountered in various houses , work at 100 mph and certainly don’t stop to stand still, let alone surf the net.
Worked with a housekeeping staff who are in homes all day and they might listen to music but would usually put the radio on.
Just ask her , if she is Young it probably did not occur to her that you wold be annoyed. Most people have unlimited data I think she wants it so her family etc can contact her.

Florencemattell · 09/11/2020 12:12

Sorry fat fingers and typos. Have an English degree!

Nicknacky · 09/11/2020 12:22

MyDingALingADingDong Is this an area you work in?

LoisLane66 · 09/11/2020 14:37

I certainly do not think it's ok for her to copy down and use the OP's internet without asking, nor would I agree if asked.
We've all managed to successfully live and work pre internet and if her family need to get in touch it will have to be via her own mobile data allowance or an SMS, WhatsApp or phone call.
There should be no need to use the internet when you're working... unless it's your job.
She has no idea of the OP's allowance as 'unlimited data' is limited to a fair use policy and she might be doing that in every home she goes to.
I would think it very wrong indeed. What else is she copying while she cleans...eh? Looking through paperwork or private stuff?.
No...it's not on.

LoisLane66 · 09/11/2020 14:43

@MyDingALingADingDong
If the cleaner sends emails or messages then the IP address AND device used can be found.

I think that was the point

jontyl · 09/11/2020 15:13

Do you have poor mobile signal in your house. Even so, I can't see why she didn't ask. It's the polite thing to do surely.

LoisLane66 · 09/11/2020 15:48

@ GoJoe2020
Another poster wrote that the device used would not show. I was rebutting that comment.

The poster whose name you quoted said it would show Hmm

Nicknacky · 09/11/2020 16:38

LoisLane66 Certainly when I’m executing search warrants relating to IP addresses, it shows us who that address it subscribes to and we cannot tell what devices used that IP address to connect to the internet.

Therefore the search is conducted to find the devices and analysis them.

MLMbotsgoaway · 09/11/2020 16:46

@Nicknacky if the OPs cleaner of several years is accessing Child abuse videos on her mobile while in her house she has bigger problems than worrying about the WiFi passcode

Nicknacky · 09/11/2020 17:04

MLMbotsgoaway Can you show me where I said she was downloading indecent images of children? I was merely correcting the statement that it is the device that is traced, not the IP address.

NailsNeedDoing · 09/11/2020 17:12

I completely see where you’re coming from OP, no idea why you’ve been given a hard time on this. Of course your cleaner shouldn’t have taken the WiFi code without asking, it’s just basic manners.

MLMbotsgoaway · 09/11/2020 17:19

@Nicknacky you’ve literally linked to a link entitled “how police track down online paedophilles” 😂.

Do you not think that, considering some of the hysteria on this thread that perhaps a standard article about what an IP address is may have sufficed

SunshineCake · 09/11/2020 17:30

@BlankProfile are you going to speak to her about it ?

Florencemattell · 09/11/2020 17:38

Loislane66 you are wrong . I have no signal at work . To use my phone I have to stand in the street , no landline. I need the internet to phone anyone . Very important when as a nanny you need to communicate with parents or in an emergency call for help.
Years ago pre mobiles most people had landlines . No offices had no phones.
I think the OP needs to come back and tell us why her cleaner needs internet.

Nicknacky · 09/11/2020 17:39

MLMbotsoaway* Feel free to post one of those articles.

I posted that article as it clearly states that when the police go through the door they don’t know what device they are looking for. That’s why I posted that.

No, I'm not going to say anything. I do not want to upset her, and the replies on the thread have made it clear that many people think that she's not done anything out of the ordinary. We're going to set up a guest network so she can use that while she is here. I am still annoyed, but I can see I'm at partly at fault too by not setting up a guest network, leaving my password where she could see it, and not offering her internet access in the first place. So, as always, thanks to those of you who gave good advice without being unpleasant.

OP posts:
Hirewiredays · 10/11/2020 09:03

Maybe she's used it for WhatsApp incase some needs her.

JamminDoughnuts · 10/11/2020 09:23

a guest network is a really good plan op, for your peace of mind
