Cleaner wants internet access - WWYD

BlankProfile · 06/11/2020 00:06

We have had our cleaner for several years. She's honest, reliable and does a reasonable job.
Our internet password is on the back of the box and at some point she has seen this and used it to sign into our network. I found out today because we have recently changed our password and she asked me for the new one, obviously forgetting she had never asked me for the password in the first place.
It's annoyed me, but we have unlimited data and in the time she's been using it, it's never caused a problem.
Should I give her the new password?

I’m astounded by all the posters who seem to think that being provided with WiFi is some sort of human right.

I don’t get WiFi at work and I can be away from my phone for hours. I manage!

MLMbotsgoaway · 08/11/2020 21:11

It’s not at all a weird comparison. Both are paid for. Both are something you could “bring with you”. Both are something that most people wouldn’t bat an eyelid about.

Shaniac · 08/11/2020 21:15

It is a weird comparrison as i just mentioned. Water is a basic human necessity. You can bring water with you but it could also run out. Internet is not a basic need. You are not going to become unwell for a couple of hours without the internet which is a luxury.

Doneanddone · 08/11/2020 21:32

Are you serious? She need to ask permission to use your wifi? My god you’re uptight.

MLMbotsgoaway · 08/11/2020 21:34

I get the feeling Shaniac that you’d begrudge this cleaner if she dared to plug her phone on to charge and accuse her of stealing electricity.

WildfirePonie · 08/11/2020 21:37

YANBU. Don't tell her the new password.

ihatesandpits · 08/11/2020 21:39

God no

Shaniac · 08/11/2020 21:39

Nah i just think its polite to ask someone if you can use something when you are in their house. If i go to my mates house i ask if i can use their wifi i dont just go to the box and type it in thats rude and entitled. Wifi is not a necessity and as pointed out she doesnt need wifi when she is there to work not be on the Internet.

MLMbotsgoaway · 08/11/2020 21:42

Is it not likely though - seeing as she’s been cleaning there for years that one day, for whatever reason, she needed WiFi - Op wasn’t in to ask - she knew it was on the back of the box so she added it.

It’s the WiFi password not a state secret,

positivelynegative · 08/11/2020 21:53

Does this cleaner have a key to your front door?

Shaniac · 08/11/2020 21:56

Tbf @MLMbotsgoaway i wouldnt begrudge a cleaner my wifi password i just think its polite to ask. I also disagree with posters saying she needs wifi in case of emergencies.

notacooldad · 08/11/2020 22:36

I work in a retail store. We are not allowed access to the stores wifi. I have to go in an hour before the shop opens and stay an hour afterwards to deep clean, on my own. Guess what, im still not allowed Internet access to listen to music or receive messages. Thats life

I work but we are allowed to log on to the works wifi. We have to deep clean rooms after use. Some staff like to have their playlists on but I put my podcasts on. We stay after our shift. and guess what, I'm still allowed to Internet access. that's life.🙅🏻

Shaniac · 08/11/2020 22:38

@notacooldad thats nice your shop allows that. Its still not a given right. If your employer says no then its no not a hard concept to grasp.

User43210 · 08/11/2020 23:00
@Shaniac by that reasoning she should ask if it’s ok to have water.
Plus if you read the OP updates, she already specifically told her to help herself to tea and coffee. So that was mentioned.

Water is fine to take, but as PPs have mentioned tea and coffee, no she shouldn't take these without consent, either. If OP had not said she was allowed, then she should bring her own.

deegee90 · 08/11/2020 23:24

What on earth is wrong with you?

Amusebouch · 08/11/2020 23:44

@MLMbotsgoaway comparing a need for water to internet access 😂

Best thing I’ve read all day

Holothane · 08/11/2020 23:46

Our cleaners worth diamonds to us, we’d have no problem with it.

MuseumOfYou · 09/11/2020 00:09

Shes there to work, not fanny about on her fone. Personally, I'd sack her. Plenty more where she came from

Aren't you special?

jontyl · 09/11/2020 06:28

She's probably seen this post and identified herself. You may need a new cleaner now. I still think it rude to just help yourself to someones internet without asking but maybe I'm old fashioned.

CallmeFP · 09/11/2020 07:12

I shudder at the thought of having to work for some of you, just awful cold-hearted uptight people.

CallmeFP · 09/11/2020 07:15

You trust this person with your home and family but don’t trust her with your internet Confused says a lot about you to be honest that you’d even come on a public forum to justify yourself.

MLMbotsgoaway · 09/11/2020 08:12

@Amusebouch no I’m not comparing the need. I’m comparing the level of “theft”. Both are paid for, both are pretty much unlimited, and both are something that most people wouldn’t bat an eyelid about providing to someone they’ve welcomed into their home.

Amusebouch · 09/11/2020 09:47

@MLMbotsgoaway that’s the thing though, a lot of posters on this thread would bat an eyelid.

It’s odd that people don’t seem to understand that this is about manners, being polite and respectful, rather than the actual use of the WiFi.

Those who think it’s ok, would you honestly start looking around for a code at your friend’s without asking? The only time I could imagine this is if it was a very very close friend and for some reason I was in her house alone for a long time and doing her a favour. Even then I would text to ask. Being paid to be in someone’s home...erm no. Again, should the same apply to surveyors, electricians, plumbers etc ?

MyDingALingADingDong · 09/11/2020 09:49

Amusebouch Not that the police would be tracing anyone for using porn hub but the IP address doesn’t track the device used. It will track down the subscriber of that IP address....I.E the op

It's the work of seconds to also see what device was used.

BlankProfile · 09/11/2020 11:48

callmefp - please read the op - I haven't come on to justify anything. I posted to see what the norm is now wrt nternet access. I have not said anything negative about my cleaner at all, other than I think it is a bit rude to take an internet password without checking. That's it. I posted in chat not aibu because I wanted a reality check. I've had a whole load of insults thrown at me for just asking a question.
