Cleaner wants internet access - WWYD

We have had our cleaner for several years. She's honest, reliable and does a reasonable job.
Our internet password is on the back of the box and at some point she has seen this and used it to sign into our network. I found out today because we have recently changed our password and she asked me for the new one, obviously forgetting she had never asked me for the password in the first place.
It's annoyed me, but we have unlimited data and in the time she's been using it, it's never caused a problem.
Should I give her the new password?

I clean rurally. There is zilch signal on my phone and sometimes I am out 9-3. The school use gateway messaging app which requires connection! Or email. So yes, if I have no signal at their house I would like to use their wifi. This has never been an issue for any client?

Plussizejumpsuit · 06/11/2020 13:53

Why would this annoy you?

Bluntness100 · 06/11/2020 14:30

@towers14

Cleaner here, I've logged on to WiFi's when the password is on display as I listen to the radio on my phone. Some houses have really bad phone coverage so I have asked for password for receiving calls. If anybody had said no I'd think them a twat and question wether to carry on working for them.
Good for you. I wouldn’t even wish my cleaner to ask. This is her place of work when she’s here, if she wants to use WiFi, then I don’t care, and I’d assume she wants to use WhatsApp or download music, really none of my business.

And I’d be fairly sure she wasn’t downloading extreme porn, I trust her in my home, with my personal possessions, by hand bag, my money, my documentation, I’m sure I can trust her to use the WiFi correctly in this her place of work.

Yes, but not for urgent messages surely? For general emails and parentmail, yes. But they wouldnt email you "Your son/daughter has fallen and needs you collecting them" would they. They would ring you Hmm

In my defence, we did change the password from the one that came with the box. It was written down in the home office, not a room any visitors would ever go in, so it was secure (ish) . You would only spot it if you were having a good look round. Which she obviously does when she cleans.
For the record, she earns well above minimum wage, drives a nicer car than I do, has a better phone and takes more holidays. So we are not talking about somebody who is struggling on the breadline.
My reluctance to give her internet access is not driven by a desire to keep the downtrodden masses in their place. I just thought it was odd to sign on without even mentioning it. And I was not sure what's usual in this situation.

Everyone who comes to my house helps themselves to internet access after asking. i can't see how its a problem.

Which is it OP?

BlankProfile · 06/11/2020 14:48

Hmmm.... Both. Written down on the box .... In the home office.

I think you are responsible for what is downloaded using your password. Does she want music whilst she works at your home or is she using it at her own home? My cleaner has never asked for internet password. I think it is a strange request. I have let our cleaner borrow our large carpet cleaner though and drove her home with it and collected her when she had finished with it. She asked and I said yes. I would be furious if she just helped herself.

ramblingsonthego · 06/11/2020 16:15

All of those saying the OP will be responsible for what is downloaded. What about all the small businesses that have WiFi for customers to use? Are they all being arrested for what a customer does?

The police could very easily rule out that it was not downloaded to your devices.

Nicknacky · 06/11/2020 16:19

ramblingsontgego Yes, after a warrant has been granted to force entry and search for the devices.

I execute warrants where it’s the IP address that leads us to the address, not the device used.

It’s fraught with danger giving your password even to friends. I’ve been to a house where it was the brother accessing indecent images whilst visiting and it was his sisters door we went to.

I’m guessing you don’t go to anyone’s door. I’ve close family and friends who are police and they are finding your hyperbole over the cleaner using the WiFi and the threat of police action comical 😂

Peppafrig · 06/11/2020 16:27

@Nicknacky but obviously that is very rarely going to happen. A very very small percentage of the time. I could also get hit by a car crossing the road doesn’t mean I never cross roads as I may get hit . Chances are I will be fine crossing and chances are the majority of people aren’t downloading indecent images on someone else’s home WIFI.

Nicknacky · 06/11/2020 16:30

Bluntness100 Again, you show your lack of knowledge.

It happens. Don’t believe me if you want. If your friends are uniformed officers then they won’t execute those warrants however I’m in a department that does.

Bluntness100 · 06/11/2020 16:39

No they haven’t been in uniform for a very long time

Do tell us how often the cleaner has been downloading such extreme things that a warrant has been required though?

Nicknacky · 06/11/2020 16:42

Bluntness100 I have no idea what this cleaner is doing. However, I’m saying that by giving your password you are allowing that possibility to happen, fine if you don’t care but that’s your internet security you are compromising.

Bluejewel · 06/11/2020 16:42

I would have found a cleaner asking for the password a bit strange to be honest - less so if there’s no mobile signal .

HillaryWhitney · 06/11/2020 16:45

God this thread is unbelievable. Are people really this fucking weird in RL?

Everybody I know shares their internet password freely. Literally only on MN are people such freaks.

Iamaamazing · 06/11/2020 16:47

I think she had an affair with your partner and he must be given her the password. Blame him.Hmm

BlankProfile · 06/11/2020 16:55

Iamaamazing I'm sure that must be it. 😁
Or maybe the dog showed her. He'd do anything for a biscuit.

Yup.

Nicknacky · 06/11/2020 17:06

Bluntness100 Or rightly cautious as they aren’t stupidly naive.

Businesses tend to have different "staff" and "public" connections.

Well I’ll live on the edge and let my cleaner ans friends use my WiFi when in my home, and take the enormous risk they aren’t down loading stuff that will lead the police to my door,

I’m a gambler like that. 😂

2bazookas · 06/11/2020 17:14

@BlankProfile

I don't know why she would need it. I'm just wondering what the norm is - do those of you with cleaners give them the internet password?
absolutely not.
