How anyone can back a man who is undermining the very democracy that elected him to president is beyond me!

The problem with America is similar to that in the UK the chasm between left and right is so wide that many are simply politically homeless.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 04/11/2020 16:10

The left just don’t seem to be able to learn anything from these ‘unexpected’ results

This.

Perhaps instead of name calling and trolling (and both sides are guilty of that to be fair) they should be concentrating on why people feel that their lives will be better under who they are voting for.

Serin · 04/11/2020 16:13

There is something weird about so many of the Americans that have been interviewed on the news. I'm not one for conspiracy theories but so many of them have that glazed look, that people with Parkinson's disease have.
My DD reckons they drink from poisoned aquifers Confused Either way, they do seem "dull" in their cognition.

BaileysforBreakfast · 04/11/2020 16:15

hamstersarse

I used to be left. But no longer. And no sign I’ll come back seeing as I’m constantly receiving abuse from the left with their sanctimonious patronising vitriol. It’ll be the same here unless the left sorts itself out and stop being so nasty.

Ooh, impressive flounce.

If I were American I would vote republican this time. Seeing dems bend over backwards for BLM (the slogan is great, the organisation less so), the unchecked riots in dem controlled cities, and Biden promising an "Equality Act" that would get rid of sex-based rights (violent males in women's prison, more males in female sport - wave goodbye to your scholarships girls etc) is enough to make me support a party i never normally would. I don't envy America.

Stripyhoglets1 · 04/11/2020 16:51

Seen a quote today that it's not about people having different opinions - but about people believing in different realities (From author Matt Haig) which is a good way of seeing it.
I can't understand why people would vote for what trump represents as I just don't see the world like they do in order to be able to do so. He horrifies me to the core.
I don't see why I should listen either as most the reasons people give when asked or in social media are either based on false premises in the right wing media or they come out with "the Liberal left elite are mean and call us stupid" as justification. Own your vote and don't blame me for it!
This applies to brexit and boris too but we are better off in this country as the judiciary is independent.

BiBabbles · 04/11/2020 16:54

If she was why didnt she stand herself.

Harris did run, she was considered a high profile candidate, but withdrew due to lack of funds. That's why we had about 18 drop out before the primaries even started, and others started dropping like flies soon after. Regardless of how qualified someone is, you need the clout and sponsors to bankroll millions on a campaign, it's really expensive.

That's why we keep getting the same type of candidates.

That's why the smaller parties are at best a dream at this point, even if some of us still prefer what they're selling. The third parties cannot economically or socially compete at this stage when all the business money is tied up in a two party system that keeps tilting more and more authoritarian.

Both aren't the best, both will be heavily reliant on their teams - one's just more likely to get and listen to their team rather than a rotate through yesmen as Trump has done. Someone who will listen to others rather than jump to extremes is easier to work with, negotiate with, fight against because no matter who wins, there are fights still to be had nationally, within the parties, within communities, and globally.

This is just the prelude.

And I wouldn't let my kids towards either of them. As a former pageant child, Trump's actions while owning beauty pageants was notoriously bad & fairly well documented for the time. The idea that people must have swarmed him or whatever means fuck all if that was even true, guys like that do that shit because of the power dynamic imbalance, not because people think they're hot, FFS.

Parker231 · 04/11/2020 16:55

News reports are saying that it is looking more likely that Biden will have the 270 by the end of today.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/11/2020 17:05

@Bathroom12345

Cam. If the best that can come out of this is that a creepy Biden who is way way past his best put a black women in the White House someone is bneing played. On another thread someone shared the Biden video of him around children. Now maybe its a generational thing, the touching, the feeble jokes about only dating when you are 30 but its horrible.

Looking at Trump. I suspect in his day he had women swarming around him. Look at his wives, ex girlfriends etc. Those women remind me of the young women (I had a friend many years ago who did this) hanging around bars where young footabllers hung out. They are a certain type who are attracted to rich power men and can hold their own. I have no vote in this election but there is something about Biden which makes me very very uncomfortable.

Would I let my 12 year daughter be alone with Biden in a room after seeing the videos. No, I wouldnt. Would I allow it with Trump. Yes, I think I would.

Depends on what you want for your daughter, I suppose.

Trump was recorded bragging that a celebrity like himself "can do anything" to women, including "just start kissing them ... I don't even wait" and "grab 'em by the pussy"

Another type of accusation was made, primarily after the audio recording surfaced, by several former Miss USA and Miss Teen USA contestants, who accused Trump of entering the dressing rooms of beauty pageant contestants... Trump had already referred to this practice during a 2005 interview on The Howard Stern Show, saying he could "get away with things like that" because he owned the beauty pageants the women and girls were competing in.

jesus wept the whining and crying from the Right about people they dont like having the audacity to make a prediction about the winner- it is allowed you know. And again the re writing of history. Everybody knew brexit would be close. Everybody knew trump/clinton would be close, everybody knew the tories would win last year and were likely to win in 2015. Basically the only shock result was labour doing so well in 2017.

On top of that it looks 60% Biden's win at the moment. Stop endlessly playing the victim. Its all you have.

user1471565182 · 04/11/2020 17:15

And for the love of sanity, the democratic party are not left wing.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/11/2020 17:17

The thing about Trump is... given everything we already know about him and his total absence of anything resembling a moral compass, or impulse control, ask yourself honestly how far you think he'd go if he wasn't held in check? Say if he was shown all his 'enemies' lined up in front of a firing squad? Or allowed to summarily execute BLM protesters? Or asked if he wanted a few gas chambers in those cages*? Would he really say, 'No, that's wrong'? No, and especially not if he thought it would get him more votes.

Obviously (I hope) he'll never be given full free rein, but even so, why would you want a creature like that in power? Even if it was good for the economy?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/11/2020 17:19

*Re the cages... It doesn't fucking matter who built them. If I gave you a cage and you use it to imprison small children you've kidnapped, is that my fault?

ConfusedcomMum · 04/11/2020 18:13

I think everyone's firework celebrations planned for tommorow should be brought forward to tonight Wink.

PerkingFaintly · 04/11/2020 18:36

ConfusedcomMum, don't hex it! It ain't over till it's over.

Gonna take a long time to count all the postal votes, as we've always known.

If you’re as contemptible as Trump it’s anyone’s fault but your own

Trump campaign says its filed a suit in Michigan to try to halt counting of ballots.

Shit I have just realised it may have come across that way. Please accept my apologies

Not my intention at all. I was reinforcing the analogy you’d made by reference to his deluded lack of responsibility or moral compass
Blush

Does anyone know why the Guardian's vote count has differed so much from the BBC's today. The Guardian has had Biden at a much stronger lead all day.

I don't know but Bloomberg (US news network) has the same numbers. CNN-same as BBC and Reuters.
Lifeisabeach09 · 04/11/2020 19:57

Sorry, CNN has Trump at 213 votes.
