It's so close I can't watch...

America will get the result it deserves. Just as we did.

Thehouseofmarvels · 04/11/2020 11:02

@TracyBeakerSoYeah

I'd be curious as to how many Trump supporters would genuinely love him as Vice President with one of his kids as puppet president, and in power though one or other of his offspring for life. Lots I'd imagine.

PerkingFaintly · 04/11/2020 11:08

Gosh, Obama didn't have that problem, did he, SoupDragon.

But then Obama did get the popular vote. Twice.

GordonsAliveAndEatsPies · 04/11/2020 11:28

I'm certainly no fan of Trump but if the Democrats expected him to be voted out they should have maybe chosen a man who can remember who he is campaigning against or be able to tell the difference between his grandaughter and later son.

I wouldn't hold these facts against Biden if he was living out his days at home with the people he loves but he's not, he's wanting to be leader of the free world. It's bonkers.

As it is, the left just thought they could put in anyone and that the vote would just go their way. If they don't take their nomination seriously, why should anyone else?!

Trump is a fighter. He loves the US. He puts them first. Americans like that very much.Shame on the Democrats for putting such a rubbish candidate up. He is an old duffer who should have retired years ago.

The old duffer is going to win the popular vote by about 4-5% and is odds on to win the election, despite Trump bizarrely and totally undemocratically trying to call it for himself when he’s only got 213 EV in the bag.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 04/11/2020 11:31

I heard on LBC that it's the white male vote that Trump has lost this time around. That surprised me

American politics confuddles me. Democrats thought JB /KH team was their best option?

Cam77 · 04/11/2020 11:32

@GordonsAliveAndEatsPies
That is an incredibly shallow analysis. Biden doesn’t excite me, but sadly Sanders (for example) would have been a massive turn off for millions of centrists. The reason people vote the way they do is incredibly complex.

Biden currently has a roughly 70%-80% chance of kicking out the incumbent President, and is nailed on to win the popular vote by anywhere between 3-6%.

It’s the Republicans who need to be doing soul searching right now at their utterly useless incumbent President. Instead the Republicans are making statements about “winning” which bare no relation to reality. Instead they are busy seeking ways to get 100,000s of completely legitimate swing state postal votes from being counted which would be an absolute travesty of democracy. Have a word with yourself.

AlternativePerspective · 04/11/2020 11:39

Well, the democrats have won the sennet, so even if Trump gets back into power he’s going to find it very hard to put laws through.

hamstersarse · 04/11/2020 11:45

According to the exit polls, Trump did better in 2020 with every race and gender except white men. That crazy, sexist racist that he is! Maybe the left need to stop rioting and 'protecting' people for their own virtue

Change from 2016:

White Men -5
White Women +2
Black Men +4
Black Women +4
Latino Men +3
Latino Women +3
Other +5

cunningplan101 · 04/11/2020 12:11

Trump is an incumbent president - that is a huge advantage. If Biden does win, even with a small margin, that is a victory.

I agree declaring 50% of the USA racist is wrong... not because it's 'mean' or won't persuade them ... But just because 'racist' is far too easy an insult and too broad-brush a term. It's lazy. But I also think anyone here in the UK on the right who observes how Trump has behaved over the last four years, observes 50% of the American population voting for him (or voting for the republican party that has supported him), and doesn't find that troubling ... Well, it is they who should be doing some self-introspection rather than requiring that of the left (sure, the hardline extremists on the left are part of the problem, but everyone must take responsibility for their own voting choices).

To say: 'The alternative to the current system is a benevolent dictatorship' is too simplistic. The systems we currently live under are not the only forms of democracy. We have laws for example that govern the traditional press - that is to try and preserve a free democracy because we acknowledge electorates can be manipulated if people with enough power are allowed to lie. So how do we judge it? I think it is a lot easier to argue we live in a free democracy in the UK than in the US, where there are obvious problems with voter suppression stretching back decades. But even here - if candidates on either the left or right can lie without repercussions on social media, how do we deal with that? As populations become more divided between young urban centres and older rural populations, does FPTP still provide truly democratic results? 'Democracy' is both a very vague term and a very fragile form of governance.

quietpersonattheback · 04/11/2020 12:16

If we take as democracy a system where we - ‘the people’ - have the authority to select who they wish to govern them, then we have simply got to accept it will not always go our way.

The alternative to this is where someone is not democratically elected and that involves some form of dictatorship, whether through birth or other means. Either way, it means that the individual is not accountable.

I would rather live in (say) Trump’s America, or Johnson’s Britain, than Saudi Arabia.

Hariboqueen1 · 04/11/2020 12:18

I dislike trump I don’t think he’s a good person but I would vote for him over Biden. I don’t think Biden will do anything in his presidency just coast along no changes made and the country will sink lower. I think trump will make a difference, some good some bad but he isn’t scared to get things done. I wouldn’t want a man with onset dementia running my country. I think Biden is on track to winning though.

Bathroom12345 · 04/11/2020 12:23

I also think that Biden will win eventually but not because he deserves it. Why on earth has he stood and why would he want to? At best he will coast and not do anything every much, at worst he will be allowed to be led by god knows who. His wife who seems sometimes to be his carer?

Soubriquet · 04/11/2020 12:25

Fook off Trump!

Don’t let the door hit ya, where the good lord split ya

AlternativePerspective · 04/11/2020 12:29

So, for those saying that Biden has early onset dementia, people have been saying this about trump for at least the last year or have people forgotten that?

PerkingFaintly · 04/11/2020 12:32

If we take as democracy a system where we - ‘the people’ - have the authority to select who they wish to govern them, then we have simply got to accept it will not always go our way.

Agree wholeheartedly.

I wish Trump did.

Bathroom12345 · 04/11/2020 12:33

I dont think many would disagree that Biden is forgetful, sometimes confused and often seems to lose track of what he is saying. He is mid 70's so of course that is to be expected. Its why he chose to run that I am confused about. I know he was voted in but better candidates than him wouldnt stand. What does he hope to acheive.

Not even his most ardent supporter would say he was on top of his game, could answer tricky questions, make the right decisions etc. Lets move Trump out of the way as Biden might well win. How exactly will Biden do some good for the US? FGS - he is unlikely to last a year as his health doesnt seem great.

GordonsAliveAndEatsPies · 04/11/2020 12:37

It's not that simplistic. He is not up to the job. It's as simple as that.

quietpersonattheback · 04/11/2020 12:37

But who decides who is up to the job?

And this is where we start to run into difficulties.

GordonsAliveAndEatsPies · 04/11/2020 12:41

He's not up to the job because he can't remember simple things. How is he supposed to negotiate trade deals? Or deal with complex and intricate situations that never get into the public domain because of their sensitiviity or anything else? He won't be able to have his eye on the detail, and that's (as well all know) when things go badly wrong.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/11/2020 12:41

Marina Hyde just described Trump as 'America's howling id'. Grin I love that.

drivinmecrazy · 04/11/2020 12:43

If Biden is the best route to get a woman, and an African American to boot, into the Oval Office then I say hurrah for Biden.
He's no fool. He picked an exceptional running mate fully in the knowledge that they will likely step into the breach at the appropriate time.
Genius!!

Cam77 · 04/11/2020 12:45

Trumps done. Only question left is when will he admit it.

Bathroom12345 · 04/11/2020 12:46

Others will deal with the complex situations. Trouble is that the Commander in Chief of the Free World cannot hide in a bunker. He will need to be out there, he will need to become confident enough to answer a question he hasnt seen in advance.

Does anyone who voted or approves of Biden think he has the mental capacity and energy to do this role or is it expected that he will step down shortly.

Put Trump to one side for a moment. What exactly does Biden bring to the US bar the fact he isnt Trump.

PerkingFaintly · 04/11/2020 12:46

Sadly that's not hyperbole on my part.

Trump was actually asked outright if he would accept the election result if he loses, and replied that he would "have to see".

I'm struggling to get the transcript of his Fox News interview to load, but it's here if anyone wants to look: www.foxnews.com/politics/transcript-fox-news-sunday-interview-with-president-trump

And I'm all for giving people latitude if they've minced their words occasionally in a live interview and they correct themselves afterwards.

But Trump's already been whining this morning that the election is unfair and he'll take it to the Supreme Court (of whom 3 out of 9 are his appointees), based on nothing but him not having won yet.

So...
