He's on R4 this morning, Saturday Live, talking about coming out and of course his new book. I think this is tasteless - he talks about the upset and trauma/impact on his family, yet he has the cheek to write a book about it and plug it on national radio! Not that he is short of a bob or two, with his TV shows and We buy any car.com (that offers as little as it can get away with for your car). It seems that little will get in the way of him exploiting any opportunity to gain publicity and make money - that is the view I have of him.

I can still remember that awful cringefest on This morning, the day he Came out, it was fantastically awful to witness all the reactions from Holly and all the others, despite them all knowing anyway.

I am not surprised he has written a book about himself,as he obviously thinks he is a very special person, and he is the only person who has come out as gay. I can't be doing with him, he is just a twerp TV presenter, and has done nothing of great note that would fill an interesting read of a book.

And I can’t understand why anyone would waste their money on celebrity books. Utter drivel.

I don’t think his wife or children have said anything negative about him. They seem to be extremely close still. But you’re taking offence on their behalf.

The victimisation of one group doesn't justify the victimisation of another. Saying 'but what about women?' really isn't relevant to a discussion about Schofield's coming out.

Similarly, whether he's an arsehole shouldn't be relevant, either. Are we saying you're only allowed to come out as gay if you're a Nice Person, an all round good egg?

As far as I know PS hasn't been proven guilty of any of the activities posters are alluding to here. If you are happy with 'trial by social media' as a way for our society to function, so be it. I'm not.

He once did a ‘gig’ at the shop I worked in, to promote a stage show he was doing. His face was hard as nails until the cameras were switched on; didn’t acknowledge any of us who were running around getting things ready for his appearance.

He’s a twat.

Ugh. The same is true of Ronan Keating whom I had the displeasure of working with. Horrible and belligerent until the cameras are turned on...then it's all stardust and dazzle.

It’s baffling. I wouldn’t rad them if they were given away free - which they practically are as soon as they hit the budget bookshops.

He and Keating are fakes. Genuine “stars” are less likely to behave like that.

I don’t take offence on their behalf.

I took offence at the fact he made it all about him in such a dramatic way. If his wife was delighted, might she not have been roped into that performance too? We will never know.

I would take offence if anyone was silenced to protect his image.

He was an amazing children's TV presenter and I actually think he's a good interviewer and generally empathic. He lost so much weight and clearly has been through a lot and feels guilty.

But then so many on MN don't seem to be pleasant.

Easy to understand why some celebrities are disliked, dislike many myself, but harder to understand why some posters make such bitter remarks about someone they don't personally know.

I can't believe poor old Fern Britton had to leave This Morning because she lied about having a gastric band and he kept this secret the whole time and didnt stick by her.

I bet he only came out because someone was going to expose his lies.

I hate how Holly lets him get away with it and how he hides behind her friendship.

Lots of people that worked with Philip when he was younger state that he was quite unpleasant and looked down on others.

He just reinvented himself as a fake 'fun' character for day time TV.

He earns good money so his wife and chidren are hardy going to jeopardize that so will say anything positive to keep him in work.

If his wife was delighted, might she not have been roped into that performance too? We will never know.

Exactly. We don’t know ! People just make stuff up about ‘celebs’.
I think a lot of people aren't very nice and therefore I’m sure a celebs aren’t either. But I do know a famous person who gets quite a lot of bad press and isn’t liked by Mumsnet, yet he’s a really good person, I’ve known him for many, many years. Things get made up, people jump on it and opinions become ‘fact’.

I know I don’t know him personally. But from what I’ve seen of him on the television over the years (broom cupboard excepted), I don’t think much of him.

He was almost watchable when he was with Fern. But something shifted hugely when he paired up with Holly.

I don’t think he shows empathy at all although he has mastered the head tilt.

He is just not watchable now for me.

The runner thing confuses me. Why would Phil coming out stop that being a story of interest? Surely the press would have jumped on that after he came out. Unless he had a deal with them that he would come out if they didn't print the runner story

I think he's had his time now and should either graciously stand down - or be pushed from TV esp this Morning and be replaced to give someone new a chance.
