What's the best chocolate?

I was reading another thread where people are saying how much chocolate has changed over the years. I used to love Cadbury's but it's just nothing-y now. Really feels like eating sugar for very little reward.

Now I like Co Op's fairtrade range, and Montezuma's Absolute Black.

What did you used to like, and what do you like now?

maison de chocolat is the best Ive ever tasted, about the price of gold though Shock

SkepticalCat · 14/10/2020 18:25

Aldi choceur
Lindt extra creamy
Most other Lindt/Lindor

I get a subscription to cocoa runners, 4 bars of proper craft chocolate delivered every month. They take the craft element really seriously, it's all sourced from artisans using rare types of cacao and so on. I love it.

If I'm looking to binge on something cheap, Divine, G&Bs and Montezuma's are all fine when I'm looking for quantity...

I may be crazy but I swear that Cadbury's is different depending on the shape of the squares. I love the sharp-edged chunks, but don't like the newer, smoother squares. I swear they are different!

Does anyone else think this?

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 18:30

@lampshadery

YES! And it also shows that they are (literally) cutting corners.

I had a Tony’s milk chocolate sea salt caramel bar not long ago and was really disappointed. Way too much salt. I’m back to choosing between Lindt balls (classic red ones) or a Toffee Crisp!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/10/2020 18:38

Love Tony’s, but am also a big fan of Cadbury’s giant buttons.

I find Galaxy and Lindt far too sweet.

I know it’s a different question, but M&S do sea-salt fudge “bites”, coated in milk chocolate, and honestly, they are the absolute best.

AlwaysLatte · 14/10/2020 18:39

Purdys all the way!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/10/2020 18:41

Montezuma's Buttons

Sainsbury also stock Tony and Amazon not just Waitrose for anyone not near a Waitrose

Tana433 · 14/10/2020 18:43

Lindt Lindor fan here too.

Ooh M&S also do mini whips in a packet. So nice. (Can you tell I’m back from my run and have no chocolate in?!)

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 19:07

@Bearsbearsbears40

You need to go to the shop. I suspect that with your current train of thought, pretty much anything will do.

Cheap ...definitely snicker bars.
Also Aldi mini nutty choc bars.

Much better ...Hotel Chocolate liquer chocs have quite a bite.

Also like good quality chocolate with nuts.

SpringFan · 14/10/2020 19:20

Used to like Bourneville, never been too keen on milk choc, although I tried some M&S mmilk for some reason and it was OK.
Now its Lindt 70, 86% and 99% and their raspberry, orange. I bought some Pear in France once as well, but not seen it again.
Tesco £1 a bar 72%, mint, orange
Aldi's single variety

alpinia · 14/10/2020 19:28

Joining the votes for Tony Chocoloney... it really is the best. I love the caramel and sea salt but agree the dark milk is just like chocolate should be. In case anyone is ever in a post covid Amsterdam they have a little shop near the train station where you can design your own flavour and wrapper and watch it being made, or they will text you in about an hour when it's ready if you dont want to wait!

Another good brand is Fazer...it's Finnish and can often be found in Scandinavian duty free shops.

M&S flaked truffles
M&S single origin milk

Alvertan · 14/10/2020 19:38

Lindt mini patisserie (In a box) and White Lindor if or stockpiling, but for a treat Sarah Bunton Chocolate, i only order three bars at a time because I have no self control.

Any recommendations for an alternative for Creme Eggs? They’re just not the same anymore.

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 19:38

Really want some Tony's Chocolonely. Nowhere near a Sains or Waitrose.

Might call the emergency services.
