What's the best chocolate?

I was reading another thread where people are saying how much chocolate has changed over the years. I used to love Cadbury's but it's just nothing-y now. Really feels like eating sugar for very little reward.

Now I like Co Op's fairtrade range, and Montezuma's Absolute Black.

What did you used to like, and what do you like now?

Hotel chocolat, I love their cherry liquors, I don’t drink alcohol but I can’t get enough of these.

Trisolaris · 14/10/2020 14:43

Tony’s chocolonely all the way!

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/10/2020 14:43

Green and Blacks 85% cocoa dark chocolate. Wonderful stuff!

I liked Bournville when I was little. Nowadays I like Valrhona when I can afford it (not very often!) Usually, I get Lindt 55% or 65% milk chocolate if it's a cheap milk chocolate I fancy, or one that's between 80-90% if I want dark.

The M&S truffles aren't bad either. The ones in the little gold box.

I wouldn't even use Cadbury for baking buns for my DD's school fundraisers. The stuff is absolutely vile now, & doesn't even melt properly in the oven, nor in a bain marie, so is equally useless for pouring over the top of a cake. It's the nasty cheap vegetable fats they use in place of cocoa butter, they don't melt properly.

Tony’s is not only delicious but also made by a principled company

dottiedodah · 14/10/2020 17:27

Eckhart Yes they are really good .I enjoy making Truffles too .If you are near any of the shops its well worth a look too!

colouringindoors · 14/10/2020 17:29

Waitrose extra cocoa milk chocolate is excellent (40-45% cocoa solids).
Hotel chocolat - lots but esp Dizzy Praline
Most Lindt too!

flissity · 14/10/2020 17:39

I’ve seen this Tony’s chocolate mentioned on MN before but never seen it in shops.

Where do you buy it?

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 17:41

@flissity Waitrose stock it.

Sainsbury’s sell Tony’s Chocolonely, it is lovely and you wouldn’t eat the whole bar in one go, at least, I couldn’t and I am a pig. I only ever buy it on offer though. That and I still like Kinder if I’m wanting something cheap.

Einszwei · 14/10/2020 17:44

The 30p dark chocolate from Lidl. It's not too rich.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 14/10/2020 17:51

Lindt caramel and sea salt
Lindt intense mint
Tonys
Sainsbury’s plain whole nut
I also like those mini Daim bars they sell in Ikea.
In Iceland we became addicted to liquorice chocolate but I’ve never found it here.

happymummy12345 · 14/10/2020 17:53

Bournville

ReviewingTheSituation · 14/10/2020 17:55

Tony's. The dark sea salt and almond is amazing. As are all the others!
Waitrose and Sainsbury's sell it - keep an eye out for offers. It's often on a price cut. Still more expensive than others, but worth it.

ZoominMoomin · 14/10/2020 17:57

Lindt 80/90%
Tony's Chocolonely - it's expensive, but honestly so nice. The one with pretzel bits in is my favourite!
Aldi Moser Roth is good, too.
A classic Dairy Milk WAS nice but now they are absolute trash.

I can't stand galaxy. It's way too sweet.

Beaverlac · 14/10/2020 17:59

Ritter Sport dark whole hazelnuts,
Hotel Chocolat enrobed mango
Ritter Sport marzipan

Take your pick - all moreish!

PolaDeVeboise · 14/10/2020 18:00

I used to LOVE Cadbury's - especially the easter eggs that I used to put over my nose and mouth like a face mask and inhale..... it's RANK now. I love most Hotel Chocolat stuff, but, particularly their chocolate macarons - mmmmmm. However, I have just discovered a polish brand - E. Wedel - that's £1 a bar, doesn't have palm fat in and is the closest I've tasted to 'old' Cadbury yet. Happy days!

MidnightFlit · 14/10/2020 18:04

Tony's Dark Milk is lovely and the closest to 'old fashioned' chocolate, or Cote d"or Milk chocolate.

I was given some Rococo chocolate for my birthday and was conscious of how eye-wateringly expensive it is - but honestly couldn't tell the difference. (I am a chocolate philistine, though.)

Whathappenedtothelego · 14/10/2020 18:06

Right, that's it, I'm taking a 10 mile detour tomorrow to buy some Tony's chocolate!

Which flavour should I try? I don't like caramel, and prefer milk chocolate to dark.

Panticles · 14/10/2020 18:09

@Eckhart
I love the name is it a Rook reference? A Rook chocolate fan is a winning combination.

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 18:11

@Whathappenedtothelego

I should get 10 bars of each flavour, just to be on the safe side...

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 18:13

@Panticles

Alas not. I had to Google 'Rook Eckhart' to find out what you meant!

lurker101 · 14/10/2020 18:14

Previously: Donegal Cadbury’s Dairy Milk (honestly it’s different in ROI!)

Now: Tony’s chocolonely

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 14/10/2020 18:16

Aldi is lovely. Choceur I think it's called. Loads of different flavours too.

Eckhart · 14/10/2020 18:16

Tony's is winning...
