What is your favourite red wine

I think my taste buds are changing or failing me. I always enjoyed a glass of Shiraz. But not so lately. I like deep, full bodied red wine, not sweet. Hit me with your recommendations please.

I know you have said you are off Shiraz but all Shiraz's are not equal! Try the Hedonist from Waitrose, it's the most gorgeous full bodied red. You cannot compare something very average, like the Jam Shed Shiraz that some have recommended here, that's not a good example of Shiraz!

The closest cousin of Shiraz is Cabernet Sauvignon. Some have mentioned Malbec but CB is an even closer comparison note wise. I love Shiraz and CB but don't enjoy Malbec, it's a bit too 'plummy' for my taste.

I wouldn't bother with Chateauneuf du Pape, if you like (or liked) Shiraz, I'm pretty sure you won't enjoy it, it's a very distinctive taste (dried herbs) and v different to Shiraz.

I've tried a lot and you really do get what you pay for with red. £20 minimum per bottle usually or I won't like it/it might set off a migraine. A good shiraz from S.Africa/Aus or an expensive French wine like chateauneuf do pape but no way am I touching any £5 a bottle
plonk from now on, I'd rather just leave it.

I love a malbec, rioja or a cabernet sauvignon.

Amarone Della vapolicella is my all time favourite but can be ££

Love a Rioja or a Malbec too.

Cam2020 · 18/09/2020 14:29

Another vote for Malbec.

I don't like anything with too much tannin.

Cam2020 · 18/09/2020 14:30

Majestic do a lovely red called Porta 6. Really fruity and smooth.

Nosleeptilteenagers · 18/09/2020 14:35

Cabernet Franc but its expensive.

The trial box from Naked wines is really good for £30 if you want to try some different ones a bit cheaper.

Crunchymum · 18/09/2020 15:19

Can't beat a nice Tempranillo.

StormBaby · 18/09/2020 15:22

Love all Bordeaux Wines, which are usually a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Hate anything with Pinot in 😖

2ndAugust · 18/09/2020 20:30

Montepulciano and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The only Shiraz I can drink is yellow tail, less harsh than some of the others. Merlot tastes dusty to me, and I don’t like liquorish.

BBCK · 18/09/2020 20:38

It depends how much tannin you like in your wine. My husband loves a Bordeaux But I find them too “tannique”. I prefer a Chianti or a Cote de Rhône, which are lighter wines. Malbec is a good middle ground and some of the Douros are very drinkable

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 18/09/2020 20:47

I love Yellow tails jammy red
19 crimes
Sainsburys do a decent house merlot cheap
McGuigans is ok
Tesco most wanted shiraz or merlot

Saffzy · 18/09/2020 20:49

Barefoot merlot and Barefoot Malbec and Turners Road Reserve merlot are my favourites!

MiddleClassProblem · 18/09/2020 20:50

Jam shed is good if you know what this coming. It tastes like wine and jam. It goes really well with Chinese food but if you have it and think it’s a regular red wine you will hate it.

Teabird · 18/09/2020 21:41

Got to be Faustino Rioja or Dark Horse Cabernet or Graffigna Red, all luscious! Currently on my 2nd glass of 19 Crimes, we are going into local lockdown on Tuesday so enjoying time with my mates now!

GinisLife · 18/09/2020 21:50

I had a lovely Pinot Noir in a restaurant last week which apparently you can buy in Majestic. It was Romanian. I think it was called Five Ravens. Very drinkable.

Haybo26 · 18/09/2020 22:24

To those that mentioned Jam Shed. Probably the worst wine I have ever tasted! I couldnt even give it away to my neighbour or my neighbours daughter haha. I poured it down the drain. I am going to try a few of the Malbecs mentioned and some of the Italian wines.

Current quaffing favourites are Terre Di Faiano Primitivo (reckoned to be the value variety from which came Zinfandel), Maree d'something or other (can't read the writing on the label) Nero di Triona, and Finca Los Olmos Malbec. All from Waitrose and often on special offer. All full - bodied and massive up - front flavour. Yum Wine

... value...

... grape...

SisyphusDad · 18/09/2020 22:46

P.S. Not drinking all three at once. Honest. 'Cos we had fish tonight so the wine was white. Hic. Halo

Delatron · 18/09/2020 22:50

Ooh yes I do love a Pinot Noir too. Bit lighter

LondonPainter · 18/09/2020 22:54

I also go for Spanish and Italian reds

Ribera del Duero
Nero d'Avola
Tempranillo
Rioja
Montepulciano
Barolo on special occasions!

MrsBeltane · 18/09/2020 23:01

I like a bottle of Gigondas or Vacqueyras. Both quite full bodied, delicious.

enjoyingscience · 18/09/2020 23:01

Primitivo here. Marks and Spencer’s used to do a bloody lovely negroamaro, but I can’t find it now.

queenjaneappro · 18/09/2020 23:05

Love barefoot Malbec and merlot. If I'm feeling flush though dark horse Cabernet Sauvignon is delicious 🍷
