What is your favourite red wine

Haybo26 · 17/09/2020 22:46

I think my taste buds are changing or failing me. I always enjoyed a glass of Shiraz. But not so lately. I like deep, full bodied red wine, not sweet. Hit me with your recommendations please.

I'm sure I know the next line Grin

Get thee to a Majestic Wine. They do (or used to, before this madness) do this blind tasting wine profile thing, and you can taste a bunch and they identify the kind of wine you like and everything is colour coded in the shop!!

Crankley · 18/09/2020 00:14

I love a good Chateau Neuf du Pape.

Natsel84 · 18/09/2020 00:14

Redshoeblueshoe · 18/09/2020 00:17

Excuse me - just because I like a nice cheap wine from Lidl doesn't mean I don't appreciate a bottle of Chateau Neuf du Pape Grin

Crankley · 18/09/2020 00:46

I'm confused. Where did I denigrate your choice? There are some excellent cheaper reds available which I enjoy drinking when I can't afford a good bottle of Chateau Neuf, but it is my favourite.

NibbleQueen · 18/09/2020 07:30

You can try the wine app Vivino, you scan wines you enjoy and then when it has enough data you can scan wines you're considering and it'll tell you if you'll like them.

Personally am a fan of bold reds without too much tannin. This usually means something from the south of Italy, primitivo, nero d'avola.

Carignan from France is really nice. Majestic do one called Alain Grignan. £7 a bottle, such good value.

Also the US have some lovely pinot noirs if you're willing to spend a bit more. It's so far from the watery ribena-esque PBs from the old world!

wannabebetter · 18/09/2020 07:37

Valpolicella (prob spelt that wrong!) or, if I'm feeling particularly flush a lovely Baloro

ohffs66 · 18/09/2020 07:44

Malbec here too, and also a huge fan of Cabalie...that may be a bit sweet for you though, it has undertones of port about it.

OutComeTheWolves · 18/09/2020 07:46

Rioja

MrsJackRackham · 18/09/2020 07:49

My favourite is a 13%, 13.5% at a push. A 14 makes me sleepy and a 12% will do if there's nothing else.
11% is only good for cooking with.

Haybo26 · 18/09/2020 11:19

Thank you everyone. Super helpful suggestions. Just doing an Asda order now so going to pop a few of your recommendations in my basket.

I love Rioja but if I’m after a drinkable bargain Waitrose Chilean red £4.99 very nice .

iklboo · 18/09/2020 11:32

Another Malbec fan here. Barefoot do a lovely one.

iklboo · 18/09/2020 11:34

@Decisivelyindecisive - not bringing it down at all! Jammy Red Roo is lovely Grin

Lexilooo · 18/09/2020 11:46

I love Italian reds, especially Puglian ones, so I'd say a Primitivo or Negroamaro would be my first choice. Maybe a Sicilian Nero D'Avola.

Spanish Rioja is normally a reliable choice that can be bought easily.

I would recommend trying a mixed case from Naked they do some great wines and we have enjoyed some we wouldn't have expected to. The app is great for keeping track of what you like and helping you predict what will suit your tastes.

Also Aldi, easy to try all kinds of different wines cheaply. They have some great value choices, and a decent range that changes regularly.

Shoxfordian · 18/09/2020 11:58

One of my recent favourites is Carmenere
I also like a Rioja and a Malbec

JMAngel1 · 18/09/2020 12:03

Oh sweet jesus, do not buy Jam Shed - it is evil! The sweetest red wine - disgusting.

I love Chilean Carmenere or Barola for v special occasions.

JMAngel1 · 18/09/2020 12:04

Now I want a glass Grin

Ridingthegravytrain · 18/09/2020 12:23

Minervois. Can be hard to get hold of but delicious

Vinorosso74 · 18/09/2020 12:42

I like Italian and Spanish Reds best. Currently my favourite is Primitivo. Waitrose do an Italian House Red that is enjoyable for £4.99. I find the Spanish one a bit rough mind.
I think Sainsburys have 25% off when you buy 6 or more bottles at the moment (double check as I may have imagined that).

lughnasadh · 18/09/2020 12:44

Lindeman's Bin 50 shiraz.
