I have an important question. It's about biscuits.

I'm sat having a cup of tea and a couple of packets nice biscuits. Or malted milk, the ones with the cows on.

When it occured to me I've never bought a branded packet of malted milk. I always get the cheapest, I mean a malted milk is a malted milk is a malted milk. They all look and taste the same. They even all have the picture of the cow and milk churn.

Same goes for custard creams, rich tea, digestives. All the plain biscuits. the cheaper the better.

I only really spend money on fancy biscuits, barring chocolate hobnobs since I discovered the superior, Aldi ones.

So who does. Obviously plain premium biscuit buyers are out there. But who ? And what's your reasoning ?!

I did try adding a poll but couldn't figure it out 🤨

Sports biscuits were completely nut free as well, not even may contain traces.

PilatesPeach · 17/09/2020 19:33

Garibaldi's were called Flies' Graveyard at school

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 17/09/2020 19:33

I agree with Bourbons, Custard Creams, Nice Biscuits.

But McVities for digestives and rich tea biscuits

Almost all biscuits are made with palm oil The stuff which is driving orang utans to extinction.
It’s very quick and easy to make your own biscuits.

Neeks888 · 17/09/2020 19:36

Lidl malted milk are the best Grin

WrongKindOfFace · 17/09/2020 19:39

@missyB1

Random question, does anyone remember sports biscuits? They were like a malted milk but with pictures of people playing sports. They may have been iced on one side I can’t quite remember.
They still sell them. www.amazon.co.uk/Foxs-Sports-Biscuits-200-Pack/dp/B006309F3O?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Aldi custard creams are rank.

WildRosie · 17/09/2020 19:41

McVitie's Royal Scot biscuits were slightly salty, IIRC. Maybe it was a Scottish shortbread recipe. They disappeared years ago.

Nsns · 17/09/2020 19:46

@PilatesPeach Eccles cakes are the Flies' Graveyard!

SkepticalCat · 17/09/2020 19:52

Sainsbury's bourbons aren't very nice. Otherwise I'd agree that for bourbons/malted milks/custard creams, supermarket own or cheap brands are just as good or superior to more expensive ones.

Spied · 17/09/2020 19:54

It has to be McVities for Rich Tea and Digestive.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 17/09/2020 19:55

Garibaldis were called squashed flies growing up.

I used to love them haven't had them for yonks

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 17/09/2020 20:01

@MiddleClassProblem

We did a pink wafer test at work. Both pink panther and Asda own bras tasted very artificial but in different ways. Crawford’s won out.
I can imagine Asda own bras would taste pretty artificial tbh Grin

Agree with pp, cheap ginger nuts are the best. Love the ones you could break a tooth on!

Has anyone tried the cherry bakewell choc digestives? 😍😋😍

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/09/2020 20:07

While we’re talking about biscuits, does anyone remember bran biscuits? It wasn’t made of all bran cereal it was literally a rectangle of compressed bran.

Dm must have bought them in Sainsburys as that’s the only shop she used. They ate them at night with ovaltine.

It was more of a punishment than a treat but I can’t find anything online and I’ve always wondered wtf was anyone doing making biscuits out of bran?.

shinynewapple2020 · 17/09/2020 20:07

Bourbons definitely aren't all the same . The ones which are shaped like custard creams are invariably cheap and nasty .

Oh and value choc chip cookies not very nice .

Raindropsonrosesand · 17/09/2020 20:10

We live on Tescos malted milk biscuits in our household. We ended up with the Sainsbury's ones in the early weeks of lockdown, and had to stop buying them despite the impending apocalypse.

Raindropsonrosesand · 17/09/2020 20:11

Oh, and cheap own-brand jammy dodgers are definitely far better than the branded version.

FippertyGibbett · 17/09/2020 20:20

A lot of the cheap biscuits have palm oil in and are vegan.

FrankiesKnuckle · 17/09/2020 20:24

Malted milk with a smear of Nutella in top.

You're welcome!

rslsys · 17/09/2020 20:40

For everyone touting that McVities Digestives are the best, could I suggest you organise a blind tasting against the Aldi version?
The Aldi ones taste 'more grown up', if that makes sense!

SpeedofaSloth · 17/09/2020 20:41

Only the oblong bourbons are any good, not the ones that look like they should be custard creams.

Custard creams are always excellent.

Atalune · 17/09/2020 20:48

I hate biscuits. An abomination. Apart from ginger snaps.

BikeRunSki · 17/09/2020 20:53

@Margo34

Ugh, malted milk are the Kings of boring biscuits.

Pass me a custard cream.

Uuurgh, I hate custard creams, it’s what I buy the dc if I’m trying to cut down on snacks.

Pass me the bourbons. The nice ones!

PilatesPeach · 17/09/2020 21:00

@nsns I grew up in Surrey and Garibaldis were definitely called Flies' Graveyards at school - we didn't know what an Eccles Cake was trust me.

emilybrontescorsett · 17/09/2020 21:01

I remember Sports biscuits and I too preferred certain sports, I think skating or hockey were my favourites!I
I can't accept all biscuits are the same. I do think McVities taste better.
I would never chose a bourbon or a custard cream, only as a last resort.
