I have an important question. It's about biscuits.

I'm sat having a cup of tea and a couple of packets nice biscuits. Or malted milk, the ones with the cows on.

When it occured to me I've never bought a branded packet of malted milk. I always get the cheapest, I mean a malted milk is a malted milk is a malted milk. They all look and taste the same. They even all have the picture of the cow and milk churn.

Same goes for custard creams, rich tea, digestives. All the plain biscuits. the cheaper the better.

I only really spend money on fancy biscuits, barring chocolate hobnobs since I discovered the superior, Aldi ones.

So who does. Obviously plain premium biscuit buyers are out there. But who ? And what's your reasoning ?!

I did try adding a poll but couldn't figure it out 🤨

There's a few ordinary everyday biscuits such as Bourbons, custard creams, rich tea and digestives whose popularity has always baffled me. I just find them all so bland and dull and mouth-drying, especially the latter two. They're particularly awful if they begin to go soft. Even the most humble biccy needs some character. Maybe it's just me.

@Cocolapew

Can I ask an important question about biscuits too? Does anyone else eat digestives and rich tea squashed together with butter? Like a biscuit sandwich. I'm NI and only eat them this way, DD has friends in England who are horrified by this, as is my English niece.
Yes I do that, but only occasionally. They are lush.

I only dunk into tea, and only with a rich tea biscuit, ideally a rich tea finger.
I eat digestives with cheese, love sweet, salt and crunch.

Can you still get the digestives in the shape of a loaf of bread?

The loaf-shape digestives were Hovis-branded. I haven't seen them recently but then I don't shop for digestives.

Lotus speculoos sandwich biscuits are my new best thing. Not a big biscuit eater, but when I need a biscuit, I NEED a biscuit, iyswim 😂

Shesellsseashellsontheseashore · 18/09/2020 20:12

I love custard creams but avoid Hills ones and Lidl ones as they taste different and not very nice. Not sure about Aldi though
🤔
Asda and morrisons ones are fine but i do like the mcvities tasties ones.
I have to say that I'll eat most chocolate digestives too but mcvities are my favourite.

Cocolapew · 18/09/2020 20:30

You can still get the Hovis digestives.

I’m going to get some, I used to have them at bedtime when I stayed with my grandparents.
Cocolapew · 18/09/2020 20:48

The Hovis ones are the digestives I like best with cheese.

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 18/09/2020 20:53

Mcvitties for chocolate digestives every time. Although that's probably because I get them from the corner shop. Also very happy with the Italian ones they have in there

slummymummy82 · 18/09/2020 21:13

M&S extremely choclately milk chocolate squares are the best biscuits I have ever tried.

WoodenFox · 18/09/2020 21:19

@Pearsapiece

They're definitely not the same. The aldi digestives don't have dairy in where as mcvities do. Same with the fruit shortcake (known in our house as 'dead fly biscuits')
Omg I thought it was only my mother who called them dead fly biscuits!! 😮
Lolaloveslemons · 18/09/2020 21:26

You can still buy Foxes Sports biscuits.
They are not iced but how I remember them a kind of malted milk.

ORANGE creams!! Like custard creams but orange flavour inside. There is a strawberry version too. Found in corner shops only I think!

Not squashed together but definitely had buttered digestives when I was young.

sueelleker · 18/09/2020 21:37

Yes, they were great.

sueelleker · 18/09/2020 21:38

The loaf-shape digestives were Hovis-branded. I haven't seen them recently but then I don't shop for digestives. I saw some in Waitrose today.

emilybrontescorsett · 18/09/2020 21:41

The Hovis ones come in boxes with crackers. We buy them at Christmas.

cardoon · 18/09/2020 22:15

@Oldraver

I love shortbread but crikey almighty some of the branded ones are awful and hard like ships biscuits

I've found supermarket ones much better

Names of these branded ones please, ships biscuits sound right up my street Smile

Tesco do Rhubarb and custard creams. I'm not sure they taste like rhubarb, but they're very nice.
Gulsink · 19/09/2020 15:08

I make 'custard custard creams' by taking the biscuit sides off two custard creams (discard into mouth) an sandwiching the two custarded sides together.

anorangeaday · 19/09/2020 15:10

I get branded biscuits, for all kinds. I really haven’t found a non-branded biscuit that tastes the same, but I’m very picky about things like that. I wish I wasn’t.

Fink · 19/09/2020 15:23

Supermarket own brand are acceptable (and what I usually buy): malted milk, nice, bourbons, custard creams

Has to be proper brand: chocolate digestives, hob nobs, cookies, choco Leibniz/ petit écolier.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 19/09/2020 16:22

This thread has prompted me to open a packet of Lidl’s digestives. To me, the taste is exactly the same as others I’ve tried but the texture is smoother and less digestivey. All the same, a biscuit, any biscuit, is always better than no biscuit.

As to Garibaldis, in our house they were referred to by my Dad as Fly Cemeteries.

lazylinguist · 19/09/2020 16:30

I find most of the basic kinds of biscuits like digestive, custard creams, bourbons, rich tea etc a bit boring tbh, but the non-branded ones are just as good as the branded ones. Aldi Jaffa Cakes are way nicer than the proper ones, as are lots of Aldi things. Their version of the chocolate-coated Bahlsen biscuits are really good.

TPS2009 · 19/09/2020 16:56

Hills Nice biscuits are better than most branded IMO
