Tell me why I should give up diet coke?

I drink too much of the stuff. Currently going cold turkey and I keep falling asleep and having headaches.
Does it get better? Replacing with lovely squashes and trying to remind myself that I will be better off physically and mentally but this is torturous!

I went cold turkey. It’s terrible for the teeth. The headaches got better after a couple of weeks.

AnathemaPulsifer · 16/09/2020 22:16

Diet Coke is terrible for the teeth, not giving up!

ZarasHouse · 16/09/2020 22:19

I am so much happier with caffeine in my life. Hate to say it Shock

I always rein it in or give up on caffeinated drinks just to become miserable and grumpy. I don't drink alcohol but one energy drink and I'm ready to party too! It's my vice and I'm sticking with it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Teeth, dental care is such a rare commodity these days. I ration myself to one a day and look forward to a lovely cold one in the evening. Like anything if you drink it all the time it does not taste as good as the first one of the day I find.

shivermetimbers77 · 16/09/2020 22:23

I’ve also gone from one Diet Coke a day to one every blue moon and feel so much better for it. It’s basically like drinking battery acid (but I do still love it Grin)

foxyroxyy · 16/09/2020 22:24

Aspartame. That's probably what's causing the headache. It does for me anyway.

riotlady · 16/09/2020 22:26

I find I crave sugar soooo much more when I’m on Diet Coke. I find myself less inclined to want to grab a chocolate bar in the afternoon when I’m off it.

It’s not good for your gut flora either

ageingdisgracefully · 16/09/2020 22:27

There's nothing quite like a cold DC out of a can..(stuff the bottles, that's not the same AT ALL).

Heaven in a tin (even if it makes you pee all day). Grin

Wtfdidwedo · 16/09/2020 22:29

Bill Gates drinks loads of it and he seems fine Grin

Kakiweewee · 16/09/2020 22:30

I gave up last year. It wasn't easy, but I feel so much better without it.

My tummy hurts less, my period hurts less, my bladder hurts less, and I sleep much better. I have less anxiety feelings, my heart rate is lower and my blood pressure is lower.

I very occasionally have a coke zero these days. But caffeine is not a part of my day to day life.

AlwaysLatte · 16/09/2020 22:30

Terrible for the teeth and loaded with chemicals. I used to like a can of Diet Pepsi every day but made myself give it up - I found it was the cold that I loved, so always have filtered water with ice now and it's just as refreshing. I don't miss it.

Proudpeacock · 16/09/2020 22:33

I had one today for the first time in ages. Tasted lovely but my tummy blew up like a balloon. It was just as well that DH was doing the school run this afternoon as I suddenly looked 6 months pregnant. I am just going to remember this when I am craving another.

NekoShiro · 16/09/2020 22:54

The artificial sweetener makes you crave sugar, it tastes like sweet sugar so your body prepares in ingest sugar but it isn't there so you drink more and it's just a pointless cycle

BitOfFun · 16/09/2020 22:55

It leeches calcium from your bones.

amieejust · 16/09/2020 22:57

The chemicals and additives in it, especially Aspartame, are not good for you! It can be addictive too, as you probably know.

Personally I prefer 'normal' Coke even though it's sugary.

Kakiweewee · 16/09/2020 23:00

@BitOfFun

It leeches calcium from your bones.
I didn't know that. I'm being monitored for low calcium but was told it was due to vitamin D deficiency.
thisgirlrides · 16/09/2020 23:09

Oh now I have one pretty much every day and whilst I know it's not meant to be good for you, don't suffer any of the symptoms some of you had bar sugar cravings. But if I didnt have a dc in the evening I'd be on the wine so is it any worse?

NinnyNewName · 16/09/2020 23:40

It's mostly BS tbh.

Tell me why I should give up diet coke?
NinnyNewName · 16/09/2020 23:42

Also, people saying about the "chemicals" ... everything we put in our bodies is a chemical. EVERYTHING.

Ilovesausages · 16/09/2020 23:45

I don’t understand how it is bad for our teeth when it has no sugar in it?

imissthesouth · 16/09/2020 23:47

Terrible for your teeth, the sweetness are worse than sugar, as they're sweeter they increase your desire for sugar. I gave it up years ago.

NinnyNewName · 16/09/2020 23:49

Can anyone share any actual studies to back up any of these claims?

NinnyNewName · 16/09/2020 23:50

ilove the teeth issue is probably the only actual fact here. And it's due to the acid.

allinadaystwerk · 16/09/2020 23:54

Artificial sweeteners are all chemicals that are not food and detrimental to health, so diet or no added sugar drinks and foods contain these chemicals to make them taste sweet. Google the effects. Diet coke has the additional poison of high dose caffeine. Just bad for your body in every way. Better off drinking full fat at least the sugar is real

CrunchyNutNC · 16/09/2020 23:57

The sweeteners fool your body into thinking you're consuming something sweet and your insulin levels rise in readiness to remove this sugar. Having permanently elevated insulin levels are very bad for you.
