Tell me why I should give up diet coke?

JustOneLastThing · 16/09/2020 22:04

I drink too much of the stuff. Currently going cold turkey and I keep falling asleep and having headaches.
Does it get better? Replacing with lovely squashes and trying to remind myself that I will be better off physically and mentally but this is torturous!

None of those articles convince me. Very few link to actual studies. They are far from conclusive and state as much and that is obvious from the language used. I suspect that a lot of it has more to do with a lot of diet drinkers being overweight / not having good nutrition / not doing weight bearing exercise (eg bone health in women: it's crucial to lift weights by middle age to prevent bone density loss).

ivfbeenbusy · 17/09/2020 08:09

I limit it now primarily due to the aspartame in them

But I've been going through infertility and IVF and there was a study done once that "diet" fizzy drinks like Diet Coke and Coke Zero because of the aspartame etc can reduce the success of an IVF cycle by as much as 25%

I'm pregnant now though so will probably have the odd can once I hit the 3rd trimester.

Ninny perhaps have a look at the following, from a peer-reviewed scientific journal:

they wanted us to stop having sugar and now theyve replaced it with shit instead

PaperMonster · 17/09/2020 10:20

My sibling used to drink quite a lot each day and whilst they’ve not given up completely their consumption has decreased dramatically. Basically they had to do this as it’s caused some blood condition whose name I can’t recall, but if they’d carried on at the same level it would have been quite serious.

thedaywewillremeber · 17/09/2020 10:30

The acid is awful for you teeth enamel.

JustOneLastThing · 17/09/2020 11:02

@imissthesouth I know! It's hard to stop and get a drink at work so got into the habit of carrying round a 500ml bottle (we aren't allowed glass/ceramics at work) with me, and drinking them throughout the day. Work very long hours (14hour shifts) so easily done.
Have purchased a reusable bottle which keeps drinks cold and drinking sugar-free squash instead.

The process of making any fizzy drink including fizzy water reduces the ph levels
Neutral drinks like water are ph7- won’t harm the teeth
Coke of any kind has a ph of 2 - almost as acidic as battery acid

Drinking fizzy drinks eventually will dissolve your teeth from the outside in

imissthesouth · 17/09/2020 11:11

At least you're trying to change it, working long hours makes me tend to eat unhealthily too, i had to stop buying biscuits etc when i started working from home!

theotherfossilsister · 17/09/2020 11:11

I am actually genuinely wondering if it's diet coke that is stopping me conceiving, but I've been trying for two years with perfect blood tests so probably grasping at straws.

theotherfossilsister · 17/09/2020 11:13

@Ivfbeenbusy please can you send me that? Dp actually drinks a litre a day, and our go told him it is ok, as it doesn't contain sugar. I disagree and was shocked.

The articles don’t convince you but your infographic is meant to convince us? 😂
MilkLady02 · 17/09/2020 11:17

It’s incredibly acidic and erodes the enamel layer on your teeth. I’ve seen and treated so many patients with this problem from drinking too many fizzy drinks. Age group is getting younger too, teens who have irreversibly removed most of their enamel and have short, yellow, sensitive teeth. Obviously my professional advice is not to drink fizzy drinks. On the plus side though, if people don’t give up, I stay in work and you fund my pension pot! Grin

lazylinguist · 17/09/2020 11:25

It's awful stuff for all the reasons given. Feel free to disbelieve the studies if you want.

I can’t see how replacing it with squash is any better anyhow.

Yep, squash is crap too, though minus the caffeine. I've never been a fizzy pop or squash drinker as I don't really like them tbh. Giving up booze and caffeine have definitely made me feel better though.

LetsPlayAGame20 · 17/09/2020 11:34

It makes me hungry..
We buy 60 to 90 cans a week!
DH will have maybe 3 in a day.
I can have up. To 10 a day.

Its so expensive too. I haven't brought a case since Saturday. I got lemonade as cheaper and buy just 1 small. Bottle of I'm out.
I crave it all day.
I have to go shopping later. I'm taking enough cash for what's needed and no crate of diet coke.

My mum. And dsis are the same.

LetsPlayAGame20 · 17/09/2020 11:37

But oddly regarding teeth. I've never had to have a clean or polish and only 1 filling where I broke a tooth which got removed. And the adjoining one cracked slightly.

This 1 filling has been a pain and often gets replaced.. Its the side i tend to chew on.
And I'm knocking on 40.
Doesnt mean to say I'll always be so. Lucky.

RobertTheBruce · 17/09/2020 11:42

I won't go into huge detail but apart from what's known already, diet coke and similar is not much better than sugared because it tricks your body in to a reaction as if it was sugar. So if you're diabetic avoid it. The Obesity Code - Jason Fung, read that book, you will get the truth about ALL lies we are told about food and driink and obesity by greedy multi national companies who are killing us.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 17/09/2020 11:43

60-90 cans a week! Shock

YukoandHiro · 17/09/2020 11:43

Switch to Coke Zero. It's much nicer ;)

YukoandHiro · 17/09/2020 11:44

But omg 10 cans a day! I've been feeling bad about my 1 can a day in pregnancy...

8dayweek · 17/09/2020 11:45

@Kakiweewee I think caffeine is supposed to inhibit vitamin D absorption

NinnyNewName · 17/09/2020 11:49

Gammy the onus is on those to prove that something is harmful. It would be near impossible to prove something ISN'T harmful due to correlation not causation.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 17/09/2020 11:50

I avoid fizzy drinks, inc sparkling water for 2 reasons;

  1. I don’t cope well with the excess gas. I can’t just burp it out like a normal person and end up with agonising bloating and wind for days, even with half a can, really annoying.

  2. The teeth thing. I already have issues with my teeth thanks to years of disordered eating with purging (not bulimia as I didn’t ‘binge’, I would eat 400 cals a day for a couple of days then eat normally for a day but vomit up my main meal), so the enamel is already thin. I can’t take any risks with acid erosion. I avoid fruit juices and fizzy drinks.

My sibling was drinking similar quantities to you.
