Tell me why I should give up diet coke?

I drink too much of the stuff. Currently going cold turkey and I keep falling asleep and having headaches.
Does it get better? Replacing with lovely squashes and trying to remind myself that I will be better off physically and mentally but this is torturous!

allin can you post actual studies (Vs a Google search)? In what way are they "detrimental to health"?

And high dose caffeine? Really?!

Again, all food is chemicals. Even broccoli.

Guineapigbridge · 16/09/2020 23:59

It's not good for the natural and helpful bacteria in your gut.

NinnyNewName · 16/09/2020 23:59

Again, crunchy where is the evidence of this, Vs it being an old wives tale that people just repeat?

You can google anything and find a thousand horror stories. Doesn’t mean they’re true. Where’s the real science that Diet Coke is bad?

I can’t see how replacing it with squash is any better anyhow. If you’d said water then you might have had a point. I can’t see the reasoning in replacing one sweet drink with another.

Torvean32 · 17/09/2020 01:01

I used to drink 4/5 cans a day. I just decided to stop one day, and now I've not drunk any in 2 years. I don't miss it at all.

Susannahmoody · 17/09/2020 01:03

How much do you actually drink?

I drink 2 cans of diet Pepsi a day, I don't feel like I need to stop?

Susannahmoody · 17/09/2020 01:04

Dunno about the insulin raising etc- it fills me up and stops me eating Twixes?

Blondiney · 17/09/2020 01:21

In the last 10 years I've given up alcohol, cocaine and nicotene. I'll be damned if I'm letting you take away my ice cold cans of DC!

Tavannach · 17/09/2020 01:23

Here's an article in the NYT with links to studies examining Diet soda as the Americans call it.

Ilovesausages · 17/09/2020 01:26

I buy 1 1.5 litre bottle a week and enjoy it. I’m dieting to lose weight and it feels quite treaty which is nice occasionally.

I don’t plan on giving it up.

BitOfFun · 17/09/2020 01:35

Here Is some research on osteoporosis and Diet Coke.

BitOfFun · 17/09/2020 01:39

And another article to convince you!

BitOfFun · 17/09/2020 01:42

It's all a bit equivocal, but it's good enough to put me off drinking it regularly.

36degrees · 17/09/2020 01:43

I gave it up last year after a serious can a day 20 year habit and now if I have a taste it's absolutely vile. Was worse than giving up fags.

Kakiweewee · 17/09/2020 02:07

I gave up for the health of my bladder, my urogynae advised me to quit carbonated drinks, caffeinated drinks and artificial sweeteners, apparently they all make bladder pain and incontinence worse.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 17/09/2020 02:15

It's bad for your teeth.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 17/09/2020 02:16

There was a poster on here whose teeth were almost see through as a result of drinking diet coke every day.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 17/09/2020 02:30

It's bad for your bones but it's brilliant at removing limescale from the loo.
If you are going to drink Coke/Pepsi you might as well drink the regular 'full fat' variety as you tend to drink less of it as it quenches you're thirst better (it does mine).

  1. Weight gain, scientifically studied, believed to be either as a result of effects on insulin or by causing cravings for/conditioning to sweet flavours.
www.inc.com/minda-zetlin/diet-soda-weight-gain-metabolism-insulin-brain-fat-metabolic-syndrome.html#:~:text=But%20no%2D%2Dseveral%20studies,%2Ddiet%2Dsoda%20drinking%20peers.
  1. Tooth decay. It literally weakens your tooth enamel, all day, every day. Brushing them when they're softened from the acid can actually weaken them further.
  2. Tooth sensitivity. I had super sensitive teeth when I drank diet coke. For 15 years. I quit 2 years ago and my teeth stopped being sensitive 100% within weeks.
  3. Farts. 😂. Or the general discomfort that must come with filling oneself with so much gas.
5.There may be many other unproven health effects but there are definitely no health benefits.
Sugarspiceallthingsnice · 17/09/2020 03:23

Because Coke Zero tastes much nicer Wink

JustOneLastThing · 17/09/2020 07:37

I have been known to drink up to two litres a day Blush. Especially at work, I can just chuck it down my neck.

Schmoana · 17/09/2020 07:43

I have two cans of Pepsi max a day, I really enjoy it. My teeth are strong, my gut is fine, I don’t crave sweet things I much prefer savoury 🤷‍♀️

reluctantbrit · 17/09/2020 07:52

The headache will go away when your body get used to the lack of caffein. A friend did no-caffein for lent and suffered in the beginning as well.

All diet drinks are vile in my opinion, the fizzy ones are the worst. I had a period where I would drink a bottle or can a day and really felt the aftermaths an hour later, cut it out to the occassional one when we eat out or I need a caffein boost and that's it.

?If you don't like pure water how about mixing sparkling water with proper juice (not squash) like apple or orange. A lot nicer and very refreshing.

Greenleaves21 · 17/09/2020 07:53

@NinnyNewName

But what you posted is the same - just with a fancy info graphic. There is no scientific back up behind it or evidence.
