Black section on MN

PatricksRum · 09/09/2020 03:16

I think it would be great if Mumsnet could make a black parents section/ section for black users.

OP posts:
PapaPoule · 10/09/2020 09:28

@MeadowHay

Oh and Papa I missed your last point. Everybody would have access to a black board and OP never stated otherwise anywhere in the thread Confused
Yes, I meant to correct that, but decided I'd just wait and see if anyone brought it up.

I should have put "have access easily", without having to shop around the various skin-colour based variants of each topic.

However, I would also point out the PPs have requested special rules for the "Black board", that the moderators explicitly be chosen according to skin-colour, and guides for the special behaviour that white posters (without exactly defining how a white poster would be identified) should respect when posting in the "Black board", which is hardly encouraging as a direction of travel for this forum and society as a whole.

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 10/09/2020 09:32

So ... (waves to Pedants' Corner communityWink) I gather that MN contains a "Sex" board - and that, to discourage a relentless inflow of scumminess, posters are obliged to have been registered users for a certain amount of time before they can post there.

Looks increasingly as if the same restrictions might be needed here.

OverTheRainbow88 · 10/09/2020 09:36

@doadeer

Sorry, I do understand. I was just thinking about the different white groups as lots of people seem to think being called white is offensive in some way.

Why would other topics have to go for a new one to be added?
I’m actually embarrassed by some of the responses in this thread.

IamTomHanks · 10/09/2020 09:46

Why would other topics have to go for a new one to be added?

It's weird isn't it? People are acting like making a new board is difficult or takes up resources some how? It literally a few clicks and boom. New board.

LastTrainEast · 10/09/2020 09:55

What next? Separate seats on buses and toilets marked Black/White?

It's one thing to have a subsection for specific issues such as social problems for multicultural families or even certain kinds of hair, but once you say "black only" and "black mods" you're saying "Hey the US back in the day had the right idea"

IrmaFayLear · 10/09/2020 09:55

I agree with pp that "race relations" - although an old-fashioned term - might do the trick. Perhaps "Black issues" - just to make it clear it's for a bit of a vent or specific help and information etc.

I'm sure there are issues that black people wish to discuss that don't pertain to me (eg hair) or are not for me to comment on (eg racism). However, if it's, say, house prices/plumbing/chicken keepers then surely we're all in it together.

DioneTheDiabolist · 10/09/2020 10:00

I should have put "have accesseasily", without having to shop around the various skin-colour based variants of each topic.
It will be as easily accessed as Craicnet, Chat, FWR, Brexit and AIBU all of which have various takes on the same topic. It's easy enough once you get used to it @PapaPoule.Smile

CloudyVanilla · 10/09/2020 10:09

I am white but I think it's a great idea. Could be expanded to other ethnicities or groups too if there is a market for it.

Some people are getting weirdly up in arms about this and I just can't understand it. Black people aren't being forced to post there. And plenty of discussion including black people will still go on in the mainstream boards.

Its just a decent idea to have a board for black people to post about things that might specifically affect them

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 10/09/2020 10:11

No.

Assuming you are suggesting that as a board title. It would be quite appallingly wrong.

I really cannot be bothered to explain why.

CloudyVanilla · 10/09/2020 10:12

@PapaPoule why would you post on a black issues board if you are white? Confused

Codexdivinchi · 10/09/2020 10:14

God this thread. Embarrassing.

A bunch of white women discussing how best to place or name a board where Black women can talk freely with out white women coming on and posting shit like this thread is littered with

That is white privilege. Right there.

Fucking embarrassing.

Yes MN open up a board for Black people to find safety from this bollocks. Also we need a board for certain religions where safety can be found instead of then having to find body and soul then go in to religion topics to hide.

ArtichokeAardvark · 10/09/2020 10:16

I'm amazed that so many think this is a good idea. Sure, let's have a Black only board. And an Asian only board. And then a Whites only board?Marvellous, I do so love a return to the 1950s. Hmm

Are you totally dense? That's not what's being asked for or suggested at all.
BastardGoDarkly · 10/09/2020 10:24

The comments here don't surprise me, sadly.

All power to your elbow OP.

I hope MNHQ come through for you.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 10/09/2020 10:35

I'd like to lend my support and say this is a great idea.

The ignorance and white privilege demonstrated by some posters on this thread are depressing and embarrassing.

Good luck OP x

blablablablablablabla · 10/09/2020 10:37

Thanks for this request. I would be a lurker and Would learn a lot. I hope Mumsnet do it.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 10/09/2020 10:48

@KenAdams

Right *@PatricksRum* if you're saying other minority ethnics aren't welcome that excludes me then. I guess we have no place here either then.

And I don't understand why you think its OK to refer to white people as a generalised group and refuse to stop doing it. It serves no purpose.

These are the comments I'm having the most trouble understanding.

When I have an issue regarding my Afro hair, I would love to be able to visit a board that is ready made to understand the issue and offer help, without me having to explain myself over several pages.

When I'm discussing parenting methods that are often used in the culture I'm from, I want to be able to hop on and ask for other people's experiences without having to explain myself over several pages.

Why. The. Hell. Are people getting offended that I might want this? It doesn't exclude you. IT JUST DOESN'T CONCERN YOU. If that's something you're having a difficult time understanding, without making it about how it's offending you, then congratulations, you've stumbled upon your white privilege badge! Wear it with pride!

You only have to read this thread why people want there own space with their own community.

It’s not about wanting to be segregated, it’s about being able to have a space where people can discuss their own personal experiences without people with zero knowledge of derailing the thread.

Black, Asian, Oriental do not all fit in the ‘white box’ - every body has different needs. People should be able to find their own set of peoples with ease and discuss topics that only effect them. They are in the minority it’s hard to find advice from people from the same culture and race in a sea of white peoples forcing their white opinions on them.

Take this thread!

OP - ‘Can we have a black board to discuss black issues’

PP - ah yes maybe that a good idea but let’s take Black out of it and call it ‘race relations’

WTF?

Why is this such a fucking problem?

Needhelp101 · 10/09/2020 10:51

Don't feed the trolls, people.

Excellent idea. As the white mother of mixed heritage children, I would appreciate it.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 10/09/2020 10:54

I'm tempted to start a thread on AIBU simply stating that DS kissed his teeth at me today and I'm wondering what the best punishment is.

Tell me honestly, all you dissenters, would I get:

A) oh my goodness, how rude, when I was a child if I did that my mum would...

Or

B) so? Well what does that mean? It's a noise, right? Hardly worth grounding him over. Tell him it sounds like a funny animal, that'll learn him.

MsWonderful · 10/09/2020 11:04

I’m white. I wouldn’t presume to tell black posters whether or not I think they’re reasonable or not for wanting a Black board. My opinion on this is not relevant, I would have thought this was obvious, but apparently not to everyone 😬

C130 · 10/09/2020 11:05

Excellent idea Op. This is something that is needed here. I hope Mn makes it happen.
