Black section on MN

PatricksRum · 09/09/2020 03:16

I think it would be great if Mumsnet could make a black parents section/ section for black users.

OP posts:

Jesus, whats thoroughly depressing thread. The sheer ignorance and privilege on display here is staggering and I completely agree with others that this is precisely why a dedicated and safe space for people of with lived experience of being black is needed here. If you’re not black, this space will have zero impact on you but could make a huge difference to those who are. Nor does it exclude anyone else from requesting a similar space for issues they are passionate about. Why on earth would anyone be against that? Madness!

As has been stated many times, there are already plenty of spaces on Mumsnet for specific groups which no one apparently has any problems with. However, when it’s a space specifically for black people being requested, suddenly some people have problem with it. Give your heads a wobble and ask yourself what exactly it is you object to!

@PatricksRum I thoroughly support you with this ask and I’m delighted that mumsnet have responded positively. You shouldn’t have to explain or justify yourself so please don’t.

Puce?

I posted without reading the full thread

Ive read it now, and i think its an even better idea now

SparklingLime · 09/09/2020 19:57

JFC, the fragility, uppityness and sheer ignorance of some of the (clearly white) posters on here. It’s really lacking that MN haven’t been more proactive about this before now. Fully support you, @PatricksRum.

OP I think this is a good idea too.

Men post on Mumsnet. Having concerns about separation doesn't mean people are racist
In this case, yes it does.

Eastie77 · 09/09/2020 20:20

Haven't read the whole thread as skim reading has been depressing enough. Have we had any of these posts yet?

"I'm White but I know what prejudice is because I spent my gap year in Africa..and I was the only white person in the village..and the kids stared and laughed at me.."

"A separate section for Black people is just so racist. Why exclude Whites?"

"OP you sound really aggressive"

"If a White person asked for a similar board they would be called racist"

"I don't see colour. This kind of separatism is terrible"

.....

SimonJT · 09/09/2020 20:23

@Cam2020

To the white people racists who are so offended by this idea. Imagine if men said "women shouldn't have Mumsnet, it will be divisive, they shouldn't need their own space".

Men post on Mumsnet. Having concerns about separation doesn't mean people are racist.

Men as a group aren’t victims of discrimination. It is not comparable.
DeeCeeCherry · 09/09/2020 20:25

Also sometimes after experiencing a micro aggression or racist incident and you want to talk about it's hard to think of posting on MN because the first responses will be about how you misinterpreted it or did something wrong instead of just support

Responders like that will be all over the Black Section. They won't be able to help themselves. Then it'll become more about distracting and goading. I wonder if there are Black parenting sites out there? I must have a look.

MeadowHay · 09/09/2020 20:25

Hi, I think this is a great idea, and you're right when I think about it it's actually kinda shocking it hasn't already been done.

I'm not black but I am BAME and the racism on MN really does bother me and it does put me off posting about certain things in my life because I just know some of the racist responses that I would get. I would love to see something like 'BAME Chat' maybe? I fully support black MN users to have a specific subsection for black users too btw of course. I would just also like to see perhaps a broader BAME one as well for people like myself who struggle with the racism and lack of understanding in other parts of MN who are ethnic minorities but not black.

SoupDragon · 09/09/2020 20:25

I'm appalled at the nay-sayers.

BooFuckingHoo2 · 09/09/2020 20:31

I opened the thread thinking “don’t be ridiculous isn’t that more segregation?!”

A few pages in, I’ve completely changed my mind Flowers and actually, I’d be very keen to lurk on that board and actually learn a bit more about other people’s lives experiences.

NoToMisogyny · 09/09/2020 20:33

I’m a black woman and I find the achingly po-faced virtue-signalling from all these white women HILARIOUS.

Well that's not very helpful, is it? Hmm

What would you rather people said?

This is MN full stop though. It's pretty much the standard on almost every thread in AIBU.

derxa · 09/09/2020 21:13

Good idea

What do you mean?
BoreOfWhabylon · 09/09/2020 21:22

Dear god, this thread has brought out aaall the trolls and bottom-feeders.

OP made a sensible suggestion, MNHQ agreed. That's it. Move on.

Pan2 · 09/09/2020 21:28

Crumbs, it's like reading the arse end of some local FB threads. There's some really ignorant wing nuts around, licenced by Farage-Johnson-Brexit.
Like a section for black users will hurt anyone, 'cept thin-skinned white people.

Giningit · 09/09/2020 21:33

I thought it was just me. There’s an air of white saviour about it

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/09/2020 21:35

Yes, they're turning up on all sorts of threads.

(Are you the original Pan? If so, nice to see you again Smile)

If it makes you feel any better I couldn't give a shite either way. Have one, don't have one it makes no difference to me I wouldn't look at it anyway.
Pan2 · 09/09/2020 21:43

Hi Bore Yes the original, thank you! It's been a long time.
Joined MN when dd was in reception class. Shes now 2nd yr student nurse, working on ICU currently, and passed her driving test last week. WTF? Smile

It is gobsmacking to see white people advising and limiting where POC should be expressing themselves. "We're all for equality...except when it may make a difference, then we don't like it at all."

Giningit · 09/09/2020 21:48

I’m glad that MNHQ is looking into this board. It may help some people out and I’ll be having a look. To all those moaning about segregation, get a life. If it doesn’t affect you why are you so bothered?
