Ham and Cheese Sandwich

Would you agree a ham and cheese sandwich is a healthy lunch?

@HilaryBriss

Well it's healthier than a Big Mac I guess but I wouldn't call it a particularly healthy lunch, no. Cheese is loaded with fat and calories.
Only just

Ham & Cheese sandwich - 241 calories
Big Mac - 257 calories.

Ham & Cheese sandwich - 23g carbs
Big Mac - 20g carbs

Ham & Cheese sandwich - 11g fat
Big Mac - 15g fat

Very unhealthy! Ham is a meat and cheese is a dairy product and bread is made from grains. Very bad.

Karwomannghia · 03/09/2020 19:49

If I was trying to teach heathy eating, I wouldn’t use it as an example, but I’m not saying it’s a terrible thing to eat.

It's certainly not healthy for the pig or the cow.

You mean the ones that would never have even been born if they weren't bred for food??

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 03/09/2020 19:50

Years ago, there was a batshit breakfast thread on here with one memorable poster (moondog) declaring that any type of cereal was 'shit on a piece of cardboard'. I dined out on that one for days! 'When I was kid, we had to walk 10km to school uphill on the way there and back and eat shit on a piece of cardboard for breakfast!'

MrsMayo · 03/09/2020 19:50

Curlycarly
No
Cheese has LOADS of calories

Unless the whole of the internet health sites are lying today, cheese definitely has some health benefits

I'll tell you what's healthier: do not ever take a MN eating thread as anything other than entertainment along the lines of Take A Break or Chat. They're more batshit than what goes down Bruce Wayne's toilet. Every last one of them.

It's food, not cocaine. There's no 'good' and 'bad' food, only using your common sense and moderation.*

I appreciate the advice.

@AuntyPasta

I used the figures for Sainsbury’s ham + cheese on malted bread.
Yes but a homemade sandwich will contain nothing like the calories of a shop-bought one.

A sandwich I make at home has a single slice of ham, smaller slices of bread, nothing in the way of the same amount of butter.

Yes shop bought ones are way more calorific so you'd adjust your daily intake accordingly but h/m will be a couple hundred calories, max

MrsMayo · 03/09/2020 19:52

BOLD Fail, sorry.

Chuck the bread (don't give it to the birds - straight in bin), spread the butter on the cheese instead (make sure it's decent salted butter), plenty of ham. Yum.

Marmunia1975 · 03/09/2020 19:53

Cheese and ham are highly processed and linked to breast cancer.

I’m dying

Eat what you want, OP.

Not to worry, you'll die from scurvy and gout first.

Have you got a credible source for this? EVERYTHING has been accused of causing cancer at some point.

Is this one of 'those' MN threads I had yet to come across?

I'm quite new here.

CrunchyNutNC · 03/09/2020 19:57

indeo 😂

Oblomov20 · 03/09/2020 19:57

I hate the fact that a sandwich is now considered unhealthy. How is it unhealthy? Hmm

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 03/09/2020 19:57

It can be part of a healthy lunch.

It shouldn't be all of lunch.

Some people automatically add an apple or a fruit selection and the sandwich would include salad. Others add a can of pop, crisps and a chocolate bar.

KeepSmiling89 · 03/09/2020 19:57

A good classic in my opinion. I'd go light on the cheese though, plenty of ham, maybe a bit of gem lettuce in there and some cherry tomatoes on the side. That's an ideal lunch for me!

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 03/09/2020 19:57

There's 550 cals in a Big Mac. Otherwise I would eat them in place of a ham and cheese sandwich any day.

Me too, quite an education 🤪
NewFactsEmerge · 03/09/2020 19:59

Take out the ham and replace it with marmite. Then take out the cheese and replace it with marmite. Then take out the bread and replace it with a spoon.

Yummmmm
