Would you agree a ham and cheese sandwich is a healthy lunch?

OP posts:
Namechangr9000 · 03/09/2020 19:30

I ate one yesterday and I died, so proceed with caution.

😂😂

AuntyPasta · 03/09/2020 19:30

I used the figures for Sainsbury’s ham + cheese on malted bread.

Namechangr9000 · 03/09/2020 19:31

Going by another food thread on here a while ago, giving children sandwiches is tantamount to child abuse.
In my world it's fine...

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about this subject:

It's neither unhealthy nor healthy. Perfectly acceptable part of a balanced diet

This. I wouldn't say "oh that's healthy" or "oh no that's unhealthy". It's just... fine.

Moonshinemisses · 03/09/2020 19:32

It's a perfectly reasonable normal lunch, but this is mumsnet & some folk have weird issues with 'normal food's. No massive salad to serve with it op?

MrsMayo · 03/09/2020 19:32

It was grated and I had already started reading this thread so I only sprinkled a bit. I thought a wrap was healthier than sending him to the chippy.

amusedbush · 03/09/2020 19:33

It’s a perfectly normal sandwich. It needs a bit of mustard, but there’s nothing wrong with it. We can’t live on leaves and chicken breast every hour of the day - it’s just food. Breaking food down into ‘good’ and ‘bad’ camps is what caused the eating disorder I’ve suffered with since I was a teenager.

That was pure comedy gold.

I'll tell you what's healthier: do not ever take a MN eating thread as anything other than entertainment along the lines of Take A Break or Chat. They're more batshit than what goes down Bruce Wayne's toilet. Every last one of them.

It's food, not cocaine. There's no 'good' and 'bad' food, only using your common sense and moderation.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 03/09/2020 19:37

Not massively healthy (as with most bakery foodstuffs) and especially not if a regular choice. However probably better than many other food choices (fast ultra processed junk etc) so I would rate this as acceptable occasionally but try to aim for better nutrition and balance if practicable.

IceCreamSummer20 · 03/09/2020 19:38

Why do you need to ask?!

Gingaaarghpussy · 03/09/2020 19:39

Ham and cheese on toast is better than a sandwich.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/09/2020 19:40

@primabloodydonna

Whole meal sarnies filled with aubergine, courgette and pepper slow-roasted in balsamic, fresh basil leaves and ground pepper and turmeric.

Needs cheese. HTH.

Print t-shorts with this on and I'll wear one.
Curlycarly · 03/09/2020 19:40

No
Cheese has LOADS of calories

rosiejaune · 03/09/2020 19:41

No.

It's certainly not healthy for the pig or the cow. And not for the human consuming it; animal protein consumption is associated with all kinds of disease, compared to getting nutrients from plants.

Jamhandprints · 03/09/2020 19:41

Not a healthy meal, no but it's ok once a week or so.

imamearcat · 03/09/2020 19:42

My kids had ham and cheese toasties for lunch for a whole week when we were in Greece the other week. They survived!

EarringsandLipstick · 03/09/2020 19:43

Best response so far.

Of course it's healthy. Some crazy responses here.

As PPs have said, made better by your choice of quality ingredients.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 03/09/2020 19:44

Depends if it's processed cheese - likely to be very high fat, colourings, and what kind of ham? The watery extra-thin stuff, or quality sliced boiled ham? And what sort of bread? White sliced, or rustic wholemeal. You cannot ask a simple question because the answer is variable.

NewFactsEmerge · 03/09/2020 19:45

It's such an irrelevant question. Context is everything. Let's see:

If you eat wholemeal porridge for breakfast, a ham and cheese sandwich for lunch with a side salad and a kale juice, followed by a handful of nuts for an afternoon snack and a dinner of steamed salmon and mediterranean vegetables, you probably don't need to worry.

If you eat a ham and cheese sandwich for breakfast, followed by a bowl of melted chocolate and butter, with 4 more ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch, an afternoon snack of ham and cheese sandwiches, then 3 ham and cheese sandwiches for dinner with a side of 6 fried eggs, then you probably need urgent help.

Note: You can replace "ham and cheese sandwich" with literally ANY FOOD in both of the above scenarios and the end result would remain unchanged.

Classic!
Pud2 · 03/09/2020 19:46

@Grumpbum123

It’s a fucking sandwich it’ll fill a hole and stop snacking so fine on my eyes
Agree. Can’t believe there’s so many opinions about a bloody sandwich. It’s absolutely fine!!
QueenPaws · 03/09/2020 19:47

Needs some pickle on and turning into a toastie!

Hyperfish101 · 03/09/2020 19:47

It’s perfectly fine IMHO.

EarringsandLipstick · 03/09/2020 19:48

@GameSetMatch

No not at all healthy, butter and cheese are fats and Ham is salty and full of nitrates. Ok in moderation though!
The lack of understanding of basic nutrition is just mind-boggling.
