Would you agree a ham and cheese sandwich is a healthy lunch?

@eddiemairswife

Shouldn't there be some quinoa included? Or is that last year's food fad? (I'm not even sure what quinoa is.)
And how do you pronounce QUINOA?
DeeTractor · 06/09/2020 00:36

If anyone ever wonders why people say MN is so weird about food, this thread is a textbook example. It's a fucking sandwich, not cyanide.

KEEN-WAH!

I'd forgotten about that, I used to have some in the cupboard (maybe still do), and would mix it with green smoothies. I'd forgotten about green smoothies too.

Packed lunches were much easier in my kid's day: two sandwiches (he liked cheese and Branston pickle), an apple or banana, a kitkat or penguin and a drink. Occasionally a packet of crisps instead of biscuit. Nobody checked them and kids would swap stuff.

I remember him once telling me that one of the teachers came to the dinner table and said a boy had forgotten to bring his lunch, or lost it, did anyone have anything to spare. Most were happy to give up half a sandwich but no one donated choccy biscuit or crisps!

There probably is a thread somewhere on here, where a MNetter has worried that her DC is going to die from cyanide poisoning as the DC ate the apple pips or cherry stone.

I think it’s an average lunch - not necessarily healthy but not on junk food levels of unhealthy.

I think a categorically healthy lunch would just be a salad or fruit bowl, or some type of protein power lunch. It all depends on your diet as a whole.

PeppersYellow · 06/09/2020 01:37

No- ham is processed. Unless its low fat cheese then cheese full of fat too.

jessstan2 · 06/09/2020 03:33

Cheese is also extremely nutritious. I'm not suggesting anyone lives on it but a bit of cheese every day is good.

fallfallfall · 06/09/2020 04:25

yes, but i'm VERY particular on my ham....solid with NO fat. pork is actually very lean. not much different than a ham shank you would serve for dinner.
salt and nitrates aside (and some are lower in salt and nitrates).
cheese is fine.
on a nice rye or pumpernickel bread, with just the right mustard (old fashioned grainy stuff) a bit of lettuce .

victoria0132 · 06/09/2020 04:31

Add in some fruit or a salad and yes, you have your carbs, protein and fruit/veg. Try and stick to whole grain bread as this will make you feel fuller. Watch your salt intake for the rest of the day as the bread, cheese and ham all contain a surprisingly high amount of salt. Carbs are not the enemy, for the 1000th time! You will only gain weight if calories in exceed calories expended.

Frannibananni · 06/09/2020 05:19

Yes

Nothing wrong with fat😏
CrunchyNutNC · 06/09/2020 08:26

Carbs are not the enemy, for the 1000th time! You will only gain weight if calories in exceed calories expended.

Not all calories are equal though. 300 calories of cheese will dispatch your hunger for a long time without causing a substantial blood sugar increase, whilst 300 calories of processed carbs will raise your blood sugar which, as it comes down, will quickly leave you feeling hungry again.

Carbs are not the enemy, but many people, encouraged by food processors, have very high carb-low fat diets and wonder why they feel hungry all the time and put on weight. It isn't natural for us, as a species, to routinely eat alot of carbs (not to mention highly processed ones) whilst excluding fat and protein.

Yes i reckon it was a slow "news" day at the Daily fail they lifted a story about foodbanks instead.

eddiemairswife · 06/09/2020 10:36

I used to love banana sandwiches.

Me too on wholemeal bread with butter BUT I have to have ready salted crisps with them.
AWryGiraffe · 06/09/2020 16:19

I think it's because someone on another thread described a ham and cheese sandwich as 'junk'

CherryValanc · 06/09/2020 17:40

Have read on these boards someone claim giving a child s sandwich daily for lunch was neglect or something similar.

Odd.

jessstan2 · 06/09/2020 19:32

@eddiemairswife

Me too! I haven't had one for ages. Maybe tomorrow (the milkman is delivering some bananas).
Scarby9 · 06/09/2020 19:37

Your milkman is delivering bananas, @jessstan2 ? Does he leave them on the doorstep?
And when does a milkman stop being a milkman and become just a deliveryman?
I am jealous!

MiddleClassProblem · 06/09/2020 20:20

I think it’s a euphemism

PattyPan · 06/09/2020 21:59

@Scarby9 my milkman delivered bananas yesterday Grin you can get all sorts delivered from ‘milk and more’!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 06/09/2020 22:18

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 06/09/2020 23:42
