I’m watching Four Weddings and a Funeral for the first time

I know it’s a classic but somehow I’ve never watched it.
So I’m about an hour in and I just wanna get this straight ..

Carrie meets Charles. They sleep together. Charles finds out she’s in fact engaged and meets her fiancé. They sleep together again. And then she takes him with her to pick out a wedding dress .. that’s as far as I’m up to

What is happening here Confused I thought these two were one of the most iconic and popular couples in romcom history I had no idea this is how the relationship started 😂😂

I think Carrie is an awful character. I am not interested in how many people she slept with (although father and son is pretty icky) but the fact that she cheated on her fiance and took someone she KNEW was in love with her to watch her try on wedding dresses. That is pretty bad behaviour, no matter which way you slice it.

Plus the awful wedding register.

Clawdy · 15/08/2020 13:40

Didn't particularly like Carrie, but didn't want him to end up with Kristin ST either. She seemed so much older than him, although I know in real life they are similar ages.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 15/08/2020 14:11

I couldnt give two hoots how many men Carrie slept with. If she'd been a bloke sleeping with a female hugh grant knowing she was engaged, then expecting her to come and look at wedding suits whilst barely out of bed with her we'd all be saying what an utter arsehole "he" was. Same thing.

Carrie is an arsehole. That doesnt automatically make hugh grant's character a saint by any means but equally it doesnt detract from the fact that carrie is a horrible, horrible person.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/08/2020 14:30

@Letmegetthisrightasawoman

"Fuck fuck FUUUUUCK!!!!!!"

The scene where they're late for a wedding and miss the motorway exit, love itGrin

DH and I still do that when we're driving anywhere:

"What turn off?"
"Umm...."
"It had better not be the B359."
"It's the B359."

lazylinguist · 15/08/2020 14:34

Yep, Carrie is simultaneously a callous cow, utterly boring and terribly acted. Literally nobody thinks they're a wonderful couple!

lazylinguist · 15/08/2020 14:35

Essentially it's good because it's funny, not because it's romantic. I loathe slushy, romantic films but FWAAF is genuinely hilarious in parts.

Yes the awful register! I’ll forgive Carrie everything else, but that is inexcusable.
Meganplays · 15/08/2020 15:10

She took Charles wedding dress shopping because she liked him and was probably lonely. He was the closest thing she had to a friend.

PomBearSandwich · 15/08/2020 15:14

Ugh the snooty shop assistant at the registry shop!

Yes and the fact that the cheapest thing on carrie’s list was £1000!

I havent seen the film in ages but that shop was (or was meant to be) GTC in Sloane Square wasn't it?
Deadposhtory · 15/08/2020 15:17

Never watched it either

She also was well aware he was deeply in love with her, so it’s selfish and cruel to do that to someone. I understand she seemed quite lonely and didn’t have many friends but to play with someone’s feelings like that is just mean

Villanemme · 15/08/2020 15:35

But she only knew that he liked her afterwards when he did that revolting David Cassidy declaration of love. Before that she wouldn't have known.

The80sweregreat · 15/08/2020 17:01

The church for the funeral was filmed in Thurrock Essex ( not far from where I used to live. )
(If you want to watch a great 90s film watch ' Muriel's wedding' , great acting all round. )
Hated Dirty Dancing. Wrong music for the time it's set and he is a creep.

Starksforthewin · 15/08/2020 17:02

Inspired by the references in this thread, I’ve just looked up ‘Imagine Me and You’ on IMDb.

It’s only got Cersei Lannister in it! Cersei Fucking Lannister!

(Huge fan of Lena Headey, obvs)

I must watch this film immediately if not sooner. Anyone know where I can find it?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/08/2020 17:04

@BikeRunSki

^For me, it’s the funeral that is iconic. Having never ever heard that poem before in my life, it took my breath away.^

That film did more for WH Auden than any English teacher. There was a very slim collection of WH Auden poetry published as a movie-tie in, with Hugh Grant looking mournful on the front. It was the fashionable book to have on every mid-90s student bookshelf.

Do you mean this one?! 😂 Found it on my bookshelf...

Ah yes Lena is fabulous ! Love her. It used to be on Netflix such a shame it isn’t anymore. I’m really not sure where you could watch it you’d probably be able to get the dvd fairly cheap off amazon if you’re really wanting to see it. But for free I’m not sure. You could try typing “watch imagine me and you” into google but whatever version you find probably won’t be great quality.

Oh that’s good to know! Hadn’t realised it was on YouTube. It used to be on Netflix and was only recently taken off

I liked it.

You have to look at it backwards though. The Hugh/Andie storyline is almost irrelevant, it’s the “background” cast that make the story.

It’s not about those two. It’s about the four weddings and a funeral, especially the funeral, and the lives of the people involved.

Andie is just there to make Hugh’s character a bit more interesting and give the story an “end”.

But yes, never did get why people think Andie McDowell is so amazing..

Starksforthewin · 15/08/2020 17:16

Murinae thank you so much. I was just hovering over the DVD on Amazon!💐

Thanks also Change for your efforts! 👍🏻

Hope you enjoy it! It is very cheesy in parts and some of the lines are fairly poorly written haha. But very lovely at the same time.

I liked Andi McDowell in ' green card' and that's it. She is annoying in four weddings and is just the token American which all of these type of films have to have so they can release it in America I think!
