I know it’s a classic but somehow I’ve never watched it.
So I’m about an hour in and I just wanna get this straight ..

Carrie meets Charles. They sleep together. Charles finds out she’s in fact engaged and meets her fiancé. They sleep together again. And then she takes him with her to pick out a wedding dress .. that’s as far as I’m up to

What is happening here Confused I thought these two were one of the most iconic and popular couples in romcom history I had no idea this is how the relationship started 😂😂

yes plopthebarnowl I agree, why can none of the others speak sign language to David?

In Andie McDowells defence I once got a flight from Heathrow to NYC and she was on the same flight. Despite turning left she was the very model of grace and manners when queuing and waiting to board. So I’ve always had a soft spot for her since (still agree she was the least interesting thing about that film and the gay couple and Duckface the absolute core and heart)
That’s nice to hear! I always like hearing about positive celebrity experiences since there’s so many bad ones.

Well let me than tell you that Hugh Grant in real life is an absolute gentleman.

remainin · 15/08/2020 00:09

"Don't be ridiculous! Charles died years ago!"

JingleCatJingle · 15/08/2020 00:15

Hugh Grant is very good on Twitter.

Sistery · 15/08/2020 00:51

"They all blame you too." - One of my faves.

And the Rowan Atkinson wedding. Lydia JOHN Hibbert. etc.

SmileTolerantly · 15/08/2020 01:16

Why’s everyone so keen on Duckface? I love Anna Chancellor in other stuff but surely Kristen Scott Thomas is the real star of 4 Weddings and gets all the good lines?

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 15/08/2020 01:50

I adore this film and watched it so much in the 90s I knew it pretty much by heart. I watched it a few nights ago with my MIL and she wasn't buying it at all ('is that American woman supposed to be nice?' 'Did she marry the Scottish man just for money?' etc.)

But there are some brilliant lines in there that excuse ol' woodentop McDowell's dreadful acting. And 'stop all the clocks' gets me every single time.

Agree with a PP that it belongs to an almost (with hindsight) heartbreakingly optimistic time.

squanderedcore · 15/08/2020 01:58

I feel very nostalgic about it because dh and I were married in the same year it came out, and it was also our peak year for wedding guest attendances too. I swear that three of the weddings we went to were virtually indistinguishable from those in the film. There was even a guitar-playing duo performing on the altar steps at one of them . Grin

I know Andie McDowell was rather wooden in it, but she's so beautiful, I'll forgive her anything. I think her character was meant to be a bit of an antidote to all the unsuitable stuck up British gals with whom Charkes became (badly) entangled.

I thought everyone loathed Duck Face didn't they?

Agree the cupboard scene is hilarious Grin

I read somewhere that it was Amber Rudd (before she became a politician) who was responsible for casting the congregations in the wedding scenes. They were filming on a very tight budget so she just asked all her friends to come in their own clothes.

Starksforthewin · 15/08/2020 02:09

Yes, I think Amber Rudd was engaged as the ‘Aristocracy Coordinator ‘ or some such job title. Hilarious.

I also love this film for the pure nostalgia value. It was very of its time. I’d been married a few years by then but we were still attending five or six weddings each summer, and so many of them were just like 4W. Especially the meringue dresses!

Kristin Scott Thomas was a goddess in this film and pretty much everything else she did. She had the best acting moments, I think, and pulled them off majestically.
Like a PP, that moment when she reveals her feelings to Hugh Grant

  • “ it’s you, Charles. It’s always been you..” perfection in her delivery and facial expressions.
FagashJackie · 15/08/2020 02:59

I could skulk, if skulking were required.

FagashJackie · 15/08/2020 03:01

KST is in my opinion one of the best actors of my generation.

Trashtara · 15/08/2020 07:02

KST is the best thing in the film!

BlueSwathesChoose · 15/08/2020 07:15

I adore KST. I watch the film for her. I love the bit right at the start where she comes down to see her brother eating breakfast, takes a cup of tea and turns away.

Perfectly executed.

DH's best friend is identical to KST's brother. Same mannerisms. Just as lovely and sweet.

ElizabethMainwaring · 15/08/2020 07:16

Andie McDowell was cast simply to appeal to the US market.
I thought that Charlotte Coleman died of anorexia. Poor Charlotte Flowers She would be around 50 now.

WisestIsShe · 15/08/2020 07:17

Oh you've made me feel all nostalgic. What platform are you watching it on?

ElizabethMainwaring · 15/08/2020 07:19

Jeremy Clarkson is obsessed with KST.
He named his donkey (who he believed to be a great beauty) after her - Kristen Scott Donkey.

ThisAintNoPartyThisAintNoDisco · 15/08/2020 07:29

I always watch it when it’s on. I love it, but Carrie isn’t nice and I don’t think she deserved Charles.

dayswithaY · 15/08/2020 07:40

I think Andie was cast purely as a "name" for the American audience. Hadn't she just been in Green Card? But I do agree she was also meant to be the total opposite of all the nice English girls Charles was normally surrounded by. She seemed a lot older than him.

I always preferred Notting Hill, even though that's also Posh Boy meets American Woman.

Twilightstarbright · 15/08/2020 07:43

I love 4WAAF, mainly for the friendships but some great one liners and really summed up that time of life.

During my time of wedding every weekend I got the stay at the Saracens Head which is the hotel where Carrie gets the barman to send Charles to the hotel room. I was so excited and took a lot of photos.

Some fantastic British actors in the film, love that they are still around now (as in acting, not just alive). Except poor Charlotte Coleman.

BlueSwathesChoose · 15/08/2020 07:45

I detest JR in Nottinghill. All this fawning because she is an actress. I always scream at the screen; 'She's not the fucking Queen!'.

Still watch it (alot) though. Grin

Trashtara · 15/08/2020 07:46

ElizabethMainwaring no, it was an asthma attack.

I do remember a similar actress dying of anorexia, but can't remember who!

clary · 15/08/2020 08:14

"I read somewhere that it was Amber Rudd (before she became a politician) who was responsible for casting the congregations in the wedding scenes. They were filming on a very tight budget so she just asked all her friends to come in their own clothes."

That's believable actually; I once met someone who was an extra in the first wedding, we were at a wedding and she was wearing the hat she wore in the film!

"You must be very proud!"

belvoirbeaver · 15/08/2020 08:14

I love four weddings, it is a nostalgic watch and everything about it is very 90s Grin

According to the trivia bit on imdb there's a deleted scene that explains that Charles, Matthew and Fiona were all at university together and Gareth was a lecturer there.

Scarlett was found asleep under Charles' kitchen table after a party and never left Grin

SydneyCarton · 15/08/2020 08:35

“She’s no longer my girlfriend....” This bit cracks me up every time 🤣

The first time I watched this I had no idea Gareth and Matthew were a gay couple until the funeral scene. I thought they were just good friends who lived together Blush

SockQueen · 15/08/2020 08:38

My RE teacher got us to watch this in an end of term class once because she thought it would teach us about weddings and funerals. I assume she hadn't seen it before, because her face as Hugh Grant opened with "Fuck fuckity fuck fuck" was an absolute picture! Grin
