What are your thoughts on all girls schools?

DD is going into year 6 and we're going to have to apply for secondary schools very soon. Due to covid we haven't been able to look around any schools and so we're struggling to imagine what they are like.

One of the best secondary schools locally (if she passed the 11+) is an all girl's grammar school.

DD seems keenest on this one as it's the one her closet friends are hoping to go to. However, I'm not sure what an all girl's school will be like. What are the advantages and disadvantages of it?

Also godmother works in an all girls grammar. They had a suicide in year 8 and over 40% of the girls self harm. She begged me not to even consider it

And you think that doesn’t go on in co Ed schools? Unfortunately there was a Year 10 suicide in a local (mixed) school round here Sad

I was very unhappy at an all girls school. Very competitive and bitchy.

I went a girls' school and so did my daughter.

We're fine.

I went to an all girls school (convent) many years ago. It worked for me - girls from all backgrounds were mixed together, and we were taught that we could attempt anything we wanted to. Some of my closest friends are school friends, and I loved it. Managed to meet my DH when still at school (he went to the local boys’ grammar school)...

I went to a girls grammar school and really enjoyed it. It was a long time ago though and it was very mixed in a socio-economic way that I worry wouldn't be so much the case these days. I spent plenty of time with boys outside of school. Like Wormwoodgal said above, we were told we could achieve anything we wanted.

What @Remaker says.
My mixed school could be miserable and I was relentlessly mocked for my weight. I wasn't more than a 12-14 at the time. It was mainly because, intellectually, I wasn't intimidated by them and they didn't like it.
So thankful my girls are at brilliant girls' schools where they can shine without fear and not have to worry about what I endured.
