Non musical movies with a great soundtrack

Fun challenge for a Friday night I thought as I started watching pretty woman for the umpteenth time which I think falls into this category.

I don’t mean musicals or even films with music as a central theme, but films where ordinarily you wouldn’t necessarily expect the music to be special or outstanding (like dance movies or those starring well known singers/musical theatre actors - so not dirty dancing or the bodyguard for example)

Mine to start things off are:

Pretty woman - fabulous soundtrack which I bought initially mainly as I just loved the film and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. My particular favourites are “tangled” Jane wiedlin and “fallen” Lauren wood both of whom I’d not heard of until I got it

The graduate - parents owned this on vinyl and it was played a LOT in our house growing up, they have different musical tastes - mums big into Beatles dads more into soul and jazz - but they both love this

Pulp fiction - not a particular fan of Tarantino but my he’s good at soundtracks! My favourites here are “let’s stay together” and “son of a preacher man”

Deadpool - LOVE this film but also love the soundtrack, must admit I’m a huge George Michael fan so loved the use of “careless whisper” and the many references in the film to George and wham! But also love “angel of the morning” and “x gon’ give it to ya”

American graffiti - honestly not ever seen the film but an ex had the soundtrack and it’s amazing, tons of great old songs

Cruel intentions - yea it’s trashy and a knock off of a knock off so might not be for everyone but the soundtrack is a cracker and will bring back memories to anyone who was clubbing in the 90’s - placebo, fat boy slim, the verve, skunk anansie...fabulous!

I really enjoyed the Vanilla Sky soundtrack. Only film album I've bought.
Oh and The Great Beyond, the Andy Kaufman film with Jim Carrey

Definitely agree with guardians 1&2.
Really enjoyed Kingsman OST too.

Graphista · 25/07/2020 17:33

Vanilla sky looks pretty good

I've seen the film once as I'm a huge Tom cruise fan but didn't particularly enjoy it

@Floralnomad Shrek 2 is my favourite film soundtrack!

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 25/07/2020 19:15

Hi fidelity....
It actually has my favourite 13th Floor Elevators track!

isseywith4vampirecats · 25/07/2020 19:38

Quadrophenia
Tommy
Flash Gordon
Highlander

Graphista · 25/07/2020 20:17

@isseywith4vampirecats see I'd discount them as being films you'd expect to have good soundtracks due to the nature of the films

Tommy and Flash Gordon are rock operas I believe? Certainly Tommy is

Ditto hi-fidelity it has a central character/setting that's music based

Just watching scream trilogy for umpteenth time and certainly scream 1 has a decent soundtrack

The first thing that came to mind for me was Interstellar!

PS I also love Tom Cruise and have seen Cocktail a trillion times!

FedUp196 · 25/07/2020 20:41

(More of a score than a soundtrack I suppose, but amazing!)

maddiemookins16mum · 25/07/2020 20:48

The Deer Hunter is very good.
