Non musical movies with a great soundtrack

Fun challenge for a Friday night I thought as I started watching pretty woman for the umpteenth time which I think falls into this category.

I don’t mean musicals or even films with music as a central theme, but films where ordinarily you wouldn’t necessarily expect the music to be special or outstanding (like dance movies or those starring well known singers/musical theatre actors - so not dirty dancing or the bodyguard for example)

Mine to start things off are:

Pretty woman - fabulous soundtrack which I bought initially mainly as I just loved the film and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. My particular favourites are “tangled” Jane wiedlin and “fallen” Lauren wood both of whom I’d not heard of until I got it

The graduate - parents owned this on vinyl and it was played a LOT in our house growing up, they have different musical tastes - mums big into Beatles dads more into soul and jazz - but they both love this

Pulp fiction - not a particular fan of Tarantino but my he’s good at soundtracks! My favourites here are “let’s stay together” and “son of a preacher man”

Deadpool - LOVE this film but also love the soundtrack, must admit I’m a huge George Michael fan so loved the use of “careless whisper” and the many references in the film to George and wham! But also love “angel of the morning” and “x gon’ give it to ya”

American graffiti - honestly not ever seen the film but an ex had the soundtrack and it’s amazing, tons of great old songs

Cruel intentions - yea it’s trashy and a knock off of a knock off so might not be for everyone but the soundtrack is a cracker and will bring back memories to anyone who was clubbing in the 90’s - placebo, fat boy slim, the verve, skunk anansie...fabulous!

The Bounty music by Vangelis, love it.

Graphista · 24/07/2020 21:52

Definitely going to be checking some of these films and soundtracks out

@Holothane oh wow that brings back memories!

I remember vangelis being in the charts!

I loved chariots of fire theme

It also led to me finding out I mistakenly thought he'd also written the theme to the tv series "the life and times of David Lloyd George" (now THAT will date you if you remember it!) but that was actually Ennio morrricone who is of course better known for scoring spaghetti westerns but I'm particularly thinking of "chi mai"

Should we inc tv series?

If so "charmed" has included some amazing music, as did scandal, the Americans, Gilmore girls...

Could be here all night!!

I LOVE the Magnolia soundtrack...but my cd doesn't have Dreams on it, definitely! How weird is that?
I like Driving Sideways and One best.
And Jon Brion's weeny Magnolia tune. It's too short.

FrancoBranco · 24/07/2020 22:00

Yes, the Twilight film soundtracks were full of bangers, especially New Moon. Thom Yorke's song Hearing Damage gives me chills.

katew355 · 24/07/2020 22:00

I love The Beach soundtrack and lots of the ones already mentioned x

Holothane · 24/07/2020 22:05

Don’t forget Meghan grows up from the Thornbirds, beautiful. Yes I know the llouyd George theme another beautiful track as well. Oh yes Mary Queen of Scots and I’m referring to the original 1970 film with Glenda Jackson and one of the red graves as Mary, the theme song is magical, The six wives of Henry the eighth with Keith michelll music by David Munro fantastic.

doodlyfiddly · 24/07/2020 22:08

Atomic Blonde (Charlize Theron) has an amazing soundtrack. Can't remember the film at all though!

IveSeenThings · 24/07/2020 22:08

I also like the Good Morning, Vietnam soundtrack, loads of great 60s tracks on there.

Peach1204 · 24/07/2020 22:11

Pearl Harbour is pretty decent.

And Armageddon!

Graphista · 24/07/2020 22:37

Ohh the beach soundtrack! I used to sing "pure shores" to Dd as a baby!

Browsing for another movie to watch and reminded of another - the wedding date! Again not a film for everyone (though I love it) but stonking soundtrack

Silver linings playbook

Atomic blonde - should have been right up my street:

Charlize Theron ✔️
80's✔️
Cold war✔️
Action movie ✔️

Could NOT get into it at all! Hate when that happens - must grudgingly admit though I'm even more annoyed when someone recommends a film I think I won't like...and I LOVE it - my parents usually!

Mum is more musicals and melodrama

Dad westerns and psychological thrillers and spy movies

I feel like as a modern woman i should hate westerns and I rarely actively choose to watch them but frequently when still living at home dad would be watching and I'd be drawn in.

I suspect dd would say the same of me, she wants to be a teen flick/rom com girl but because of my influence she's into horror and thrillers and post apocalyptic stuff

Very true re good morning Vietnam! Also a deeper film than it first appears but then I think that's true of all Robin Williams' films - I am finding it VERY hard to watch these since his passing

Gone Baby Gone has an outstanding soundtrack.

ineedaholidaynow · 24/07/2020 22:48

If we are talking music rather than songs I loved the soundtrack to Witness

niceberg · 24/07/2020 22:53

Yes yes to Oh Brother Where Art Thou, and Magnolia.

And I'll offer: Local Hero.

LunaLoveFood · 24/07/2020 22:54

Armageddon

Shrek

Harry potter (I regularly listen to the full movies soundtrack played by the Prague philharmonic orchestra, it plays the music in order for all of the film's)

Labyrinth

teaandcustardcreamsx · 24/07/2020 22:56

Star Wars
Harry Potter
Jurassic Park/World (I’ve only watched Jurassic World a few times, and tbh that was only for the soundtrack and Katie McGrath)

Icedteaplease · 24/07/2020 22:58

Hidden Figures
Despicable Me

INeedNewShoes · 24/07/2020 23:04

The films that spring to mind for me are:

Pirates of the Caribbean

Billy Elliot

Titanic (though I’m not a fan of My Heart will go on, i enjoy the rest of the soundtrack)

Shrek

Bambi (not as stand-alone listening but the use of music in that film, coordinated with exact points in the animation is fabulous)

LER83 · 24/07/2020 23:04

Forest Gump and twilight. I found a twilight playlist on Spotify which I think is amazing. I'm also quite partial to the Moana soundtrack!! Guilty pleasure would be Pitch Perfect!
