Non musical movies with a great soundtrack

Fun challenge for a Friday night I thought as I started watching pretty woman for the umpteenth time which I think falls into this category.

I don’t mean musicals or even films with music as a central theme, but films where ordinarily you wouldn’t necessarily expect the music to be special or outstanding (like dance movies or those starring well known singers/musical theatre actors - so not dirty dancing or the bodyguard for example)

Mine to start things off are:

Pretty woman - fabulous soundtrack which I bought initially mainly as I just loved the film and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. My particular favourites are “tangled” Jane wiedlin and “fallen” Lauren wood both of whom I’d not heard of until I got it

The graduate - parents owned this on vinyl and it was played a LOT in our house growing up, they have different musical tastes - mums big into Beatles dads more into soul and jazz - but they both love this

Pulp fiction - not a particular fan of Tarantino but my he’s good at soundtracks! My favourites here are “let’s stay together” and “son of a preacher man”

Deadpool - LOVE this film but also love the soundtrack, must admit I’m a huge George Michael fan so loved the use of “careless whisper” and the many references in the film to George and wham! But also love “angel of the morning” and “x gon’ give it to ya”

American graffiti - honestly not ever seen the film but an ex had the soundtrack and it’s amazing, tons of great old songs

Cruel intentions - yea it’s trashy and a knock off of a knock off so might not be for everyone but the soundtrack is a cracker and will bring back memories to anyone who was clubbing in the 90’s - placebo, fat boy slim, the verve, skunk anansie...fabulous!

Dances with Wolves
Out of Africa
Somewhere in time
Etc. Etc.

Any soundtrack by the late, very great John Barry!

HunkyPunk · 24/07/2020 23:07

Harold and Maude (Cat Stevens soundtrack)

LittleRa · 24/07/2020 23:07

Came on to say Forrest Gump and Shrek and see they’ve both been mentioned! Not a film but the TV show The A Word has a really good soundtrack playlist on Spotify.

Pulp Fiction. I don't even like the movie, but the soundtrack is superb.
Also 2046.
In 1996 I went to see "Great Expectations" because of "Life in Mono", which is still one of my favourite songs of all time.

BillyAndTheSillies · 24/07/2020 23:09

Drive. I really didn't like the film the first time I saw it but loved the soundtrack. Now love them both equally.

Trainspotting and Baz Lurhman's Romeo & Juliet also brilliant.

TooGood2BeTrue · 24/07/2020 23:09

And Trainspotting of course!!

shellysheridan · 24/07/2020 23:10

The Breakfast Club
Romeo and Juliet
Empire Records
Dazed and Confused
Gladiator

sunrainwind · 24/07/2020 23:11

There's something about Mary I thought had a great soundtrack

divafever99 · 24/07/2020 23:13

Forest Gump
Billy Elliott
Definitely Maybe
and yes definitely cruel intentions!

Habibtihayati · 24/07/2020 23:17

Inception and The Namesake both have wonderfully evocative soundtracks

belvoirbeaver · 24/07/2020 23:21

So many already mentioned:
Trainspotting
10 things I hate about you
The Matrix
Guardians of the galaxy etc.

I offer two 90s films: The Faculty and Godzilla - the late 90s one. I think Matthew Broderick was in it? It was a terrible film but the soundtrack was brilliant.

wannabebetter · 24/07/2020 23:23

Apocalypse Now has to make the cut, and the first Bridget Jones pretty good...

Graphista · 24/07/2020 23:32

See billy Eliot and pitch perfect are movies I would class as expecting a decent soundtrack

That said I was dragged along to the first pitch perfect dreading it! Then I absolutely loved it and love all those films now great for a singalong

I really didn't like the film the first time I saw it but loved the soundtrack...Now love them both equally

Interesting...if I don't like a film on first watch I tend to never like it

Similar to Edwards theory on opera in pretty woman (I love opera too - had a granda who loved it)

People's reactions to opera the first time they see it is very dramatic; they either love it or they hate it. If they love it, they will always love it. If they don't, they may learn to appreciate it, but it will never become part of their soul

I think this is also true of other music and films and certain very good tv series

I say that with all seriousness as I am a passionate fan of film and tv and in another life would have loved to have been a screenwriter

I certainly think it holds true of the great movies.

Like Star Wars Grin
