Non musical movies with a great soundtrack

Fun challenge for a Friday night I thought as I started watching pretty woman for the umpteenth time which I think falls into this category.

I don’t mean musicals or even films with music as a central theme, but films where ordinarily you wouldn’t necessarily expect the music to be special or outstanding (like dance movies or those starring well known singers/musical theatre actors - so not dirty dancing or the bodyguard for example)

Mine to start things off are:

Pretty woman - fabulous soundtrack which I bought initially mainly as I just loved the film and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. My particular favourites are “tangled” Jane wiedlin and “fallen” Lauren wood both of whom I’d not heard of until I got it

The graduate - parents owned this on vinyl and it was played a LOT in our house growing up, they have different musical tastes - mums big into Beatles dads more into soul and jazz - but they both love this

Pulp fiction - not a particular fan of Tarantino but my he’s good at soundtracks! My favourites here are “let’s stay together” and “son of a preacher man”

Deadpool - LOVE this film but also love the soundtrack, must admit I’m a huge George Michael fan so loved the use of “careless whisper” and the many references in the film to George and wham! But also love “angel of the morning” and “x gon’ give it to ya”

American graffiti - honestly not ever seen the film but an ex had the soundtrack and it’s amazing, tons of great old songs

Cruel intentions - yea it’s trashy and a knock off of a knock off so might not be for everyone but the soundtrack is a cracker and will bring back memories to anyone who was clubbing in the 90’s - placebo, fat boy slim, the verve, skunk anansie...fabulous!

Dazed and Confused. It has a great 70s soundtrack

DarkDarkNight · 24/07/2020 21:19

I agree with Good Will Hunting for Elliott Smith alone.

Magnolia because I really like Aimee Mann and a lot of her songs are on the soundtrack and are used very well within the film.

You’ve Got Mail. I always think what an expensive soundtrack it is Grin definitely a big budget. I love Joni Mitchell and Carole King but there’s a lot of good songs there.

This is a good thread, I’m sure there’s loads I can’t think of right now. I loved the Empire Records soundtrack when I was young but it doesn’t really fit your question as it’s set in a record shop.

@Graphista

The recent “The Joker” film staring Joaquin Phoenix.

DarkDarkNight · 24/07/2020 21:21

The Virgin Suicides too, it’s a gorgeous soundtrack.

FrancoBranco · 24/07/2020 21:22

Forest Gump - From Elvis to Lynard Skynard and the Rolling Stones. Every song is amazing.

Top Gun - most 80s soundtrack ever

Dirty Dancing - does this count? I love all the old 60s tunes.

MinesAPintOfTea · 24/07/2020 21:23

Princess Bride
Titanic
Harry potter
Pirates of the Carribbean

borisjohnsonsstylist · 24/07/2020 21:23

Forest Gump is my all time favourite soundtrack.

Dirty Dancing

Sister Act!

elQuintoConyo · 24/07/2020 21:24

Top Gun
The Breakfast Club
The Lost Boys

Also Dances With Wolves and The Piano.

I quite like the cheese of The Wedding Singer.

Buddyelf · 24/07/2020 21:24

Liable to have the piss taken out of me for suggesting these but the Twilight movies have great soundtracks. Paramore, Florence and the machine etc they’re great!

Graphista · 24/07/2020 21:26

Life itself - hadn't heard of this take it you're a bob Dylan fan? Looks pretty good to me

Call me by your name - not a work I'm familiar with either book or film nor do I recognise anything on the soundtrack but it sounds worth checking out

A good soundtrack definitely means I enjoy a film more.

@Standrewsschool thanks - bit controversial with Gary glitter? But I take it the rest was good

Forrest Gump - good call! Well chosen music for the various events

Dirty dancing I would say doesn't count as dance movies you really expect at least a half decent soundtrack, I guess I mean movies where it's kind of unexpected?

I love wedding singer too but probably as that's very much my era

Graphista · 24/07/2020 21:30

@Buddyelf I'm banning piss taking for film and music preferences on this thread - we all like different things and that should be celebrated not denigrated!

I'm a typical 80's teen who loves a lot of films that are now viewed very differently or even were panned back then! Eg I've lost count how many times I've watched cocktail! But I love it, it's totally cheesy, Tom is gorgeous and young and tanned in it and Bryan brown is pretty damn attractive too and I actually love his story arc and cry every time

My dd likes the twilight films kind of she's not an especial fan herself but lots of her friends are, I've not seen one all the way through I don't think and only seen one Harry Potter, just not to my taste really

Cars, it maybe animation but the soundtrack is brilliant.

Floralnomad · 24/07/2020 21:32

Shrek 2 was a good sound track as well .

Graphista · 24/07/2020 21:33

Nothing wrong with animated movies being nominated either, certainly Disney are well known for excellent scores though I have ethical issues with Disney generally

Toy story films have all had beautiful soundtracks for example

And I have a personal fondness for older animated films like the original Petes dragon!

O brother where art thou, and Amelie are the ones I play again and again.

Clementine8 · 24/07/2020 21:37

Angry birds 2! DD was watching it earlier and it had loads of fab songs in it.

Graphista · 24/07/2020 21:37

Arthur is a good call!

Mannequin I've not seen in ages and had to check buy yea also a good call with a cracking power ballad love those

Which has made me think of another - Armageddon!

holymosquito · 24/07/2020 21:39

Oh Brother where art thou has my vote

Graphista · 24/07/2020 21:41

Angry birds 2 - that's a real left field shout but having looked absolutely spot on! Love surprises like that.
