I've worked out why the government didn't mandate masks for 10 days. That's the time it takes to educate people that not everyone may not be the same as them and may have difficulties in wearing a mask, and most importantly, that they might not be the magic wand they believe.

The first 36 hours of the announcement SM was full of 'at last', 'covid safe', twee cartoons to explain the science, mask makers pushing their wares. If mask wearing had been compulsory from that day, there would have been really vicious people in the shops at those that don't. There still will be, but I can see the tide has turned a little this morning, with sound explanations on how it affect deaf people and I noticed one avid mask promoter neighbour of mine saying that since shee'd worn hers from the beginning, she hadn't realised how much she relied on lip reading to help.

Drivingdownthe101 · 16/07/2020 08:06

Unless you think that because sometime you dislike holds a view, you should automatically hold the opposing one?
My feelings on masks are as I described upthread. That view is entirely unrelated to what either Trump or Johnson feel about them.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 16/07/2020 08:07

Adds aubergine, goats cheese and honey to shopping list...

Now I just need a deep fryer!

Morning lovely ADs. Or are we AMs now, anti maskers? Hmm Anyway, going to go have a cup of tea at my mum's after dropping eldest DD at school this morning, hopefully she will have heard from my dad by then, all we heard yesterday was that he was out of post op and on the ward. Also still hoping for the call from the consultant telling us if the operation was a success; was meant to be yesterday but mustn't have had time.

Might order a kids shoe size measurer online today so I can size the kids' feet correctly myself and then just order shoes online. York is my nearest place for decent shopping and they're saying they want everyone in masks now. So they can get to fuck.

Orangeblossom78 · 16/07/2020 08:12

When does the half eating out Mon- Wed start? is it start of Aug or now.. does anyone know? thanks

God, Dh is annoying today. Going on about can't keep hanging about not doing stuff, things are normal apparently, it is just me, no-one else thinks that things are not Hmm

I'm not sure what it is with him. Also, DC are old enough to go out and do stuff without me. at 11 and 15. He needs to chat to them if he has a problem. Argh. Wish could just run away from it all sometimes.

Allflightscancelled · 16/07/2020 08:18

Know what you mean orangeblossom. My DH's default is always to ask me what DD is doing about something or other, and my response is Slways 'why don't you ask her?'

I mean she's 17, capable of independent thought and speech and SITTING IN THE NEXT ROOM

Allflightscancelled · 16/07/2020 08:22

Last night DDs friend was coming round. I even got from DH 'is (friend) on her way?'

How the flap should I know? Hmm

3rd to 31sr August, Orange.

www.gov.uk/guidance/get-a-discount-with-the-eat-out-to-help-out-scheme

Website seems to indicate that you'll be able to search for registered restaurants using a postcode, which will be great. It's exam results day here on the 4th August so a meal out to celebrate / commiserate might be in order.

We go away on the 3rd (UK) so perfect timing!
ISaySteadyOn · 16/07/2020 08:35

Not AMs. Anti compulsory masks, ACMs as I said last night. And, as Paradiseinportugal said so eloquently last night, no one wants to ban them.

Also, I actually have an aubergine already so I know what supper will be.Smile

Littlebelina · 16/07/2020 08:37

Still anti dementor but not anti masker here. Definitely anti glove though (for general population). Seem to be an excuse to not wash hands, handle everything with them, cough on them, touch face etc etc. While I can see how masks might protect others I think glove wearing does the opposite. Plus discarded gloves everywhere

A woman at Costa coughed on her glove yesterday then carried on serving me Grin.
torydeathdrug · 16/07/2020 08:43

@Thisdressneedspockets yup ... I’ll spare you all another of my long rants about poor hygiene practices in people wearing masks (& gloves) and why I think making them compulsory is dangerous. Basically we have to hope community transmission stays low so the effect of all those grubby idiots rubbing their faces then touching anything I might touch without cleaning their hands doesn’t lead to increased infections. Even infectious diseases people are worried - good hygiene & social distancing are the only things proven to reduce transmission ... it is dangerous to institute an intervention which has unproven benefit but reduces truly effective behaviours in actual real life practice. Surely people understand the principle of unintended consequences?

Agree entirely that BJ is popularist ... you’ll find no fans of him here (last night I had a mini fantasy about Wancock getting squashed by a taxi - poetic justice!). Compulsory mask wearing is another popularist move to soothe the mob. And I am someone who uses masks when appropriate, as do the rest of the family - hell I even make them for people!

Did anyone see that article I posted earlier about the man abusing a woman & her child in National Gallery? ... it’s massive with severely reduced numbers/one way system there‘s no chance that you couldn’t properly social distance, masks are not required there ... it was just a nasty man getting off on attacking a woman & child. We’ll see so much more of this now - the #wearafuckingmask is a free pass to abuse women/kids/disabled people. More collateral damage ... but if it gets the neurotic young white women of mumsnet out of their houses then I guess it’s acceptable Hmm

Oh and beware when you are asked to leave your contact details ... men are now using them to stalk & harass women

www.telegraph.co.uk/women/life/test-trace-used-harass-women-already/

... yes a Torygraph link but they are one if the few that are actually interested in the disproportionate impact of this shitfest on women.

(Oh look it’s turned into a long rant Grin )

Off for my long delayed forward helix piercing today - finally! I’ll wear a mask, which I would have done anyway because I’ll be in close proximity to someone albeit briefly.

BlackberryViolet · 16/07/2020 08:43

Dh was like this. He doesn’t go out to shops much at all, rarely goes into town centres, spends a lot of his free time walking and on his hobbies. He needed a widget the other day, usually takes about 20 mins to go to shop, park, buy widget etc. It was the most demented dementory shopping experience I’ve had through this whole shitshow and took over an hour. And widgets were all out of stockGrin

He was completely lost and had been raging ever since. I don’t think he believed me. He watched me book in English Heritage tickets the other day, offered several suggestions
All still shut. So he suggested National Trust - possibly Fountains Abbey?? Ha! I’m leaving booking those to him and he can see how bad it is. Part of me is still laughing. Sometimes he’s living in a world of his own

torydeathdrug · 16/07/2020 08:47

Dear god gloves should be BANNED - how’s that for authoritarian - I wonder which thread I’ll plop onto today to rant about them 🤣

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 16/07/2020 08:48

Ugh, it was only a matter of time before the lazy thinking of “you hate masks because you’re bore trump’s love-child” took traction in the uk. So lazy. Why bother to think through and formulate an argument when you can just share a meme of someone pissing in their trousers?

On the topic of critical thinking (or lack of), my sister got a first for accounting- although she has some fancy-shmancy CFO title these days. Said it was so easy to get a first, just turn up, so what they said and no thought input required. Bless her. Hopefully she means well in terms of wielding the redundancy axe, but she’s always loved a rule. Should’ve been German.

I’m back to the doc today to ponder the over-excitable receptionists and the pointless plastic aprons.

Yes. Bit pissed off I went to the trouble to explain my views last night only to be told I should like masks because Banksy does and Trump doesn’t.
Wonder if I should be making all my life decisions on that basis?

torydeathdrug · 16/07/2020 08:52

@BlackberryViolet that’s what my parents/brother are like - fully believing the covidiot hype that life is back to normal & throngs of people are snogging complete strangers in the street ... when they ventured out of their naice village they were a bit (!) shocked by the lack of zombie hoardes & that stuff is still shut or completely dead. And the town has the depressing air of a damp Sunday morning in the early 80s. Fun!

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 16/07/2020 08:54

@torydeathdrug sadly I don’t doubt that for a moment. As I’m a single mum And not a beautiful wee slip of a thing I tend to anger men and have been shouted at (even with them!) when I’m sure they’d not have spoken to a man like that.

In fact we had an interesting life lesson last summer in braemar if all places when a man tried to “push me around” in a petrol forecourt.

Thankfully I was coming out of the shop laden down with picnic items... so was in it for the long-haul. Because I stood my ground (from the safety of INSIDE the car!) and didn’t slope off I was able to explain to the kids what was happening and why.

‘Course had that happened a few miles away in a deserted car-park we’d have legged it.

torydeathdrug · 16/07/2020 09:00

if it’s from someone who thinks a middle aged white man who makes obnoxious corporate ‘art’ for the super rich (Kate Moss in solid gold) literally using someone else’s platform for self aggrandisement is a victory for grassroots activism you’re not going to get more than “well there are goodies & baddies” twitter level of analysis!

Drivingdownthe101 · 16/07/2020 09:01

In fact, maybe in future my response to difficult situations should be to ask myself ‘what would Banksy do?’ and act accordingly? Although an unintended consequence of that might be a criminal record for drawing on train walls. On second thoughts I’ll stick with critical thinking.

dingit · 16/07/2020 09:03

Going shopping today. Is it going to be awful if I don't wear a mask? I have genuinely ordered some. It they haven't arrived yet. This is my last shop, I don't intend venturing out after 24th apart from food.

dingit · 16/07/2020 09:04

*but

torydeathdrug · 16/07/2020 09:06

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane me too - not so much now I’m older (are far angrier) but when my children were very little we just seemed to attract it. Both my sister & dd had it on trains (travelling to school) - men get off on abusing women & kids. Now they have a way to do it & get twitter likes.

torydeathdrug · 16/07/2020 09:08

@dingit it should be fine - I went through town yesterday, there were more masks but still a minority (no more than a third of people at most). They get more cross if you try to go in an out door (accident I promise!).

PickAChew · 16/07/2020 09:08

@Mascotte

Now I want aubergines... would it be bad to deep fry some bits in batter tomorrow, to cheer myself up...?
Sounds good. They seem to be plentiful, now, after the early lockdown dearth of them. I still have to hide them in a curry because they're one of the things that dh can't cope with the texture of. The other is mushrooms.

Mine is peas and anything served in its pod. It's not the taste. It's the texture and, sometimes the smell.
