orchidkiller I know. I'm encouraging DD to defer. I don't think it's worth risking making the wrong decision, and then paying all that money for a sub optimal experience? Nah!!! I'm cutting my nose off a bit as I work in the sector but for me, it's possibly not worth applying this year. Up to DD of course.

Allflightscancelled · 16/07/2020 23:07

So wise I said it three time's Grin

Sorry, all

ILoveTotoro · 16/07/2020 23:12

@LizzyButton

Friend went to reopened coffee place for 2nd time. They had tightened up and wanted details for track, trace, disembowel. She said no and walked away with visored worker running after her begging her to return.

I popped in to supermarket briefly. Security guy was greeting everyone as they went in. 1 in 20 - 30 masked? It will change.

God it's really gona screw up businesses isn't it

I will be walking away from anywhere who wants track and trace details as well and anywhere I deem too roooolez obsessed

So many retailers will lose money Sad

justasking111 · 16/07/2020 23:12

DS is going back to uni. 2nd year. He did the freshers experience last year so not bothered about that, he is not a joiner of clubs etc. has a girlfriend so will crack on in the flat when he cannot physically join lectures, studio work, library. I can understand a new student deferring though it will be a strange experience perhaps lonely and they will feel somewhat cast adrift.

justasking111 · 16/07/2020 23:15

Wales OH and DS had the oddest experience today, went to Dolgellau on business, stopped off in Criccieth at a well known establishment with lots of outside space. Saw six empty tables so asked to be seated for a bite to eat. Had they booked ahead, well no. Ah well we cannot serve you then. Can we have a drink they asked, yes you have to go to the bar to get them. Well in Wales we are not allowed indoors according to Drakeford table service outdoors only. When they left those tables were still empty. Surreal.

TheOrchidKiller · 16/07/2020 23:25

Allflights DS doesn't especially want to go to uni. He has his eye on a specific apprenticeship, but god knows if that will happen. He's applying for uni as a back-up plan.

We have talked about not wasting precious money on a degree that might well turn out to be mostly on-line.

He wouldn't mind taking time out and getting a job until things settle down. Uni wasn't an option for DD but she has a full-time job. Pay is poor, hours are anti-social, but in terms of improved mental health it's worth it. Uni isn't for everyone.

These sort of unimaginative businesses will, sadly, not survive. My friend and I went to a coffee place today with outdoor seating. All the seats were empty. They asked if we had a booking. When we said no, they said right ok now you do. No fuss, no dementoring. We bought cake that we didn't plan on buying because we were so pleased. This cafe will stay in business (and I hope the lovely young lad keeps his job)
Paradiseinportugal · 17/07/2020 00:32

The roolz according to Dickford mean that many businesses in Wales will go to the wall.
Dickford appears to have no interest in the Welsh economy. He wants the tax that they pay but appears to have no fucking understanding as to where that money is coming from. Malaka extraordinaire

HeIenaDove · 17/07/2020 01:52

facial rash and it looked horrendously uncomfortable for kids with such sensory issues as these ones have. Looked like one of them had been skin picking in reaction to the feeling of taking it on and off to be hones

I predict impetigo

HeIenaDove · 17/07/2020 02:24

Was in Boots and spotted the new No 7 limited edition summer range. Its all lip based. Lip gloss Lip Oil and a Lip and Cheek Palette. They might find it hard to shift these now face masks will be mandatory.

They had some Bourjois lippies in a basket near the till for £1 (the brand has been discontinued in the UK) and they wernt being bought either.

With beauty salons still not allowed to do facial waxing / facials brows etc (despite barbers doing beard trims and plucking nose hair) fucking misogny Little Wanksock and Chums are about to find out what women spend .................no sorry SPENT on beauty.

And arent we expecting an announcement on which Boots stores are going to close?!

It's partly a flaw in the devolution system. Which means all the businesses in Wales could go to the wall and the Welsh Government's money wouldn't be affected very much, because it's mostly coming through Westminster.

I thought BoJo was on at 5 but can't find anything on TV guide.

In the the Swedish news this morning they say that Stockholm has now nearly reached herd immunity with around 40% of people immune with either antibodies or tcells. Apparently the experts have figured this out based on more people in Stockholm being a bit more relaxed with social distancing etc and yet the number of infected is still decreasing. The rest of Sweden is at around 20% immunity. Stockholm was the first epicenter of infection though so a bit ahead of the curve

Once they reach 50% it counts as herd immunity apparently.

Just thought is share that as it might be a beacon of light in all this mask misery over here in the UK.

Allflightscancelled · 17/07/2020 07:28

orchid totally agree uni isn't for everyone. It wasn't for me really. I went but didn't enjoy it. I think it may not be for dd either. So she really needs to visit before hand and do all she can to plan carefully, and then have a good induction. Deferring might give her time, space and maturity to make a better choice

PinkFondantFancy · 17/07/2020 07:36

Apparently BoJo's setting out a roadmap this lunchtime. I won't be holding my breath!!

Orangeblossom78 · 17/07/2020 07:40

Very interesting Little Swede and positive.

I randomly picked up this book in town this week in the Works, called the Choice, it is about rules and health, mainly women reporting on each other, felt very similar to how I can imagine some on here being from seeing it during the height of this.

You get out in a shame box on display for breaking rules,

www.amazon.co.uk/Choice-gripping-thought-provoking-story-need-ebook/dp/B07SZKXY8R/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&crid=3MCXOTXSBLZ6I&keywords=the+choice+claire+wade&sprefix=the+choice+cl%2Caps%2C144&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1594967716&sr=8-1

Imagine a world where...
Everything you ate was monitored by the government.
Every step you took was counted.
Your children were weighed every day at school.
Neighbours reported on neighbours and no one was safe from judgement.
Sugar was illegal, and baking was a crime.

Imagine if that world was here... What would you do?

Toe the line or fight for your freedom...

'A captivating and thought-provoking debut' Heidi Swain

NetGalley reviewers are falling in love with The Choice:

'This story is amazing, well crafted, and truly makes you think'

'Gripping and original. A timely dystopian, feminist novel'

'A cleverly crafted, and chillingly current novel'

Orangeblossom78 · 17/07/2020 07:42

There seems the be angst here about students returning after the summer, in local press they are reassuring locals that they are going to set up testing stations at the university and that most lectures will be online etc...

TheOrchidKiller · 17/07/2020 07:49

Allflights it's refreshing to see your comments about uni written down. Round here uni is pushed as being the only option and the only pathway through life, and everything will be terrible if you don't get a degree. Having a child not at uni is seen as a bit odd.

Feel sorry for the kids (like me) who knew exactly what they wanted to do at 18 and who are not getting the uni life they wanted because of the pandemic.

TheOrchidKiller · 17/07/2020 07:53

Orangeblossom Don't know where you are, but we have 2 universities here. Plenty of complaints about students amongst locals anyway, but those same students bring a huge amount of money with them- spending in shops, and keeping the nightlife economy booming. Not to mention the jobs at those universities, and landlords renting out houses.

It'll seriously mess things up with them not around.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/07/2020 07:55

Yes, I am in Bath, and it also said about millions from the university, we have also lost 470 million (!) this year from tourism.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/07/2020 07:56

I agree btw, I feel sorry for the students.

NannyPhlegm · 17/07/2020 08:03

Uni town here as well facing a black hole in finances due to the absence of students

Allflightscancelled · 17/07/2020 08:05

Orchid it's the same here. School totally push uni as the only valid option, especially for 'smart' kids (by which I only mean kids who can pass exams) like mine. It was the same when I was a kid in my high achieving grammar school.

It does kids no favours. I was too immature to sit back and ask what I wanted, with the result that I went away to uni, hated it, left but still wasn't brave enough to just stop. I was able to move to the (admittedly very good) uni in my nearest city. So I did my three years, still really NOT enjoying it, did very little work and scraped out with a 2:2.

I would like DD to have the head space, time and freedom to make a better passage through life, whether that proves to be uni or not.

I hope your ds makes the right decision. With you behind him, not blindly pushing him into the university mould, he has that chance.

NannyPhlegm · 17/07/2020 08:07

BoJo's road map will be as useless as he is.
It's all well and good "ordering" people to get back to the office. But how is that supposed to happen when you're simultaneously chuntering on about 12k deaths in winter, mandatory face masks, localised lockdowns. None of those inspires a feeling of "safe" or "normal"
Not to mention that childcare is like gold dust until September.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/07/2020 08:09

Our summer holiday club run by school was cancelled due to lack of interest.
