Someone is turning on our outside tap

I think someone is coming into our back garden. Today and Sunday morning , the garden tap has been turned on and the hose adaptor pulled off so it is spraying on the floor until we notice.
On Sunday I thought that we had left it turned on (with the hose attached we wouldn't know ) as the hose and adaptor were on the floor nearby and maybe the pressure made it come off. But its happened again and I know for sure we have not turned the tap on, and the adaptor seems to be missing.

What's going on?! We have had a new fence and gate recently so it is high and sturdy. The only other way someone could get in is via next doors garden, then climbing on things to get over that lower fence Confused

We have known of 2 occasions in the past (we have lived here a year) where someone has 100% been in the garden because the plastic shed lid was left up. But we had our old rickety fence and broken gate back then. Someone kicked it in we think as it was hanging off anyway so we had no gate for a couple of weeks. We haven't had that problem since getting the new fence up as they wouldn't be able to get in now. (There was a footprint on the gate when we first had it put up, so some one tried to kick it down, but had nothing of the sort for a few months.
We also put up security lights In that area.
Next step, we will get a camera! Why would someone do this?

If you discover it is a person, a shotgun cartridge tripwire alarm would sort them right out and scare the bejesus out of them.

Dh uses them for the windows in his business premises and they are quite effective at making sure people don’t hurry back again (scared him senseless a few times when he’s opened the window and forgotten to disarm the thing!).

A blank mindutopia?

daisychain1620 · 13/07/2020 23:21

Your tap is still on my mind, any updates? I kinda want to camp in camouflage in your garden to see what is going on!

pandafunfactory · 13/07/2020 23:23

This is gripping.

Could it be a cat....don't know how or why but they are tricky customers who don't need motivation to do stuff..........

FrenchBoule · 13/07/2020 23:28

Can’t imagine a cat opening the tap willingly 🙄

We've told all our neighbours they're welcome to use our hose to wash their cars or fill up their paddling pool. They are in a small block of flats and some were carrying buckets down two storeys to wash their car - we're on metered water but we're not that tight!

No sign of foxes with opposable thumbs, but I've got the Marmite ready just in case!

converseandjeans · 14/07/2020 00:56

Waiting to hear who the water thief is. My guess is a neighbour using your water.

Tillygetsit · 14/07/2020 02:54

This thread is the best I've ever read on MN. Hilarity, suspense, chills. All we need now is the answer to who done it. Should definitely be a MN classic.
My money's on the horse.

Some dreadful child, I wager. Think up a hideous retribution.

managedmis · 14/07/2020 03:12

Well this is all very interesting

morethanmeetstheeye · 14/07/2020 03:15

Really hope you get to the bottom of this. I think I'd be logging it with the police just in case anything similar is happening to other neighbours.

Karwomannghia · 14/07/2020 04:08

Just a dodgy tap, surely!

Fred578 · 14/07/2020 08:43

Just a note re the shed lid being up. We have one of them and the wind manages to blow the lid up sometimes even when the catch is on

Alderaan · 14/07/2020 12:30

Any news?

Worstemailever · 14/07/2020 22:49

So... tonight's the night. I'm hoping for a report tomorrow morning!
