How do you smell if you go 48 hours with washing/ showering or using deodorant?

Especially in terms of armpit. Do you smell a lot, a little or not at all in 48 hours?

I wash my hair and shower everyday. With a sense of smell that rivals a dog's, I could never understand how people walked around stinking. I've lost my sense of smell (15 weeks) and although I can occasionally smell sweet smells, I've not smelt any bad smells since. Not even rotting rat in the house. Nothing. So I guess some people can't smell a lot and know no difference.

Cauterize · 01/07/2020 23:28

Armpits wouldn't smell at all after 48 hrs. However, the undercarriage would.

Northernsoullover · 01/07/2020 23:39

It really depends. Weather, clothing and type of deodorant or anti perspirant. It does make me laugh when people say 'you might think you don't smell but you do'. First, if you caught a whiff of someone down wind you have absolutely no idea when that person showered last. Second, unless they actually verbally state 'I do not smell' you have no idea whether they think they smell or not. Chances are they don't actually care.
I know when I'm on the turn. A quick sniff of my pits tells me whether I need to shower. I shower daily but in the heatwave my quick check often ended up with me having to take an extra shower.
In cooler months I could probably get away with 48 hours but unfortunately my oily hair means I won't go longer than 36 hours without a shower and I'd only skip a morning shower if I'm not in work.

I honestly reckon after about an hour of no deodorant after a shower I smell.

Not horrific, nothing anyone else would notice probably but a definite aroma from the pits. If I went 48 hrs it would be unpleasant. Its not like teenage boy BO, but definite armpit sweat, needs a shower, wouldnt want to life my arms!

Have no idea whay earwax type I have, rarely notice my earwax!

A lot of people do smell to me, maybe i have a nose for body smells?

copperoliver · 01/07/2020 23:59

I'd never go that long without washing, surely everyone showers and washes everyday. X

blueshoes · 02/07/2020 00:32

surely everyone showers and washes everyday

Not me, hth

WinWinnieTheWay · 02/07/2020 00:47

I have horrendous night sweats so I have to shower every morning.

MsEllany · 02/07/2020 00:48

With deodorant not at all.

Without I do get whiffy after about 12 hours. I didn’t used to.

Kaathesnake · 02/07/2020 00:56

The only time I’ve ever gone more than a day without washing, bathing or showering is if I’ve been poorly with something that had totally floored me (heavy cold, flu, stomach bug, pneumonia etc)
I’m a shower or bath twice a day person... even 3 times in heat wave😮
I just feel better for it!
It either sets you up for the day or soothes you at the end of the day... it’s the way I was brought up, my son is just the same.
Luckily, my DP is, too. Don’t like unclean whiffy men🤮

Bridecilla · 02/07/2020 00:56

Ripe. I'm naturally smelly and have to shower regularly. Dp is a soap Dodger and rarely gets whiffy

FuckItForAPackofBiscuits · 02/07/2020 00:58

Stinks-vilLe.. Sweaty chick here.

Heidihoo · 02/07/2020 04:42

Pretty awful, but I'm in the ME and it's 46c at the moment so this might skew the data. I use bar soap and a US brand of deodorant called Secret which is amazing.

whereistherum · 02/07/2020 04:53

Before COVID I imagine quite a bit, during it, not that much, because the most exercise I am getting is hoovering.

However it is rare, I don't go 48 hours without a quick wash, maybe not a shower and certainly never when I am on my period

Chicchicchicchiclana · 02/07/2020 05:08

Funny question. My armpits wouldn't be too bad but I'd feel pretty gross and keen to have a good long shower.

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 02/07/2020 07:58

@randolph78 maybe this link will work: www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/a-lucky-two-percent-of-people-have-a-gene-for-stink-free-armpits-2508106/

It really is true that some people don’t produce body odour as you’d expect. You still need to wash though, because the rest of you gets stinky in various ways (48 hours of no washing downstairs is not a great idea).

Sadly I didn’t pass my gene on to either of my sons.

MaraScottie · 02/07/2020 08:14

Not great. I shower every day.

But if I have to give a presentation at work or experience something stressful, then I smell absolutely awful!!! It must be a stress hormone or something, I always have to bring a change of top. Gross.

Cramitmaam · 02/07/2020 08:15

I would reek. DH would smell like fresh flowers. I don't know how he does it

Russellbrandshair · 02/07/2020 10:17

Exactly. For all the people smugly proclaiming that they have dry earwax and “never smell”, sure you might not get BO as quickly as others or even at all but that doesn’t mean you can just not wash for weeks on end and get away with it! Even without BO not washing for days WILL make you smell funky, musty and generally unpleasant. I’ve worked with people like this and they don’t smell of BO but they DO smell unpleasant in other ways.

employeewoes · 02/07/2020 10:22

Interesting about the earwax thing. Wonder if it's blood type related at all? My DH has wet ear wax, mine is dry. He stinks, I don't. The kids have wet earwax - DS is only little but already gets quite stinky (vinegar rather than bo though at the moment). All 3 are O+, I'm O-.

Cramitmaam · 02/07/2020 10:43

Dry earwax is usually found in Asians. We also tend to sweat less. I don't think it's a hard and fast rule though

StarlightLady · 02/07/2020 10:52

Absolutely no intention of finding out the answer to this one.

BadLad · 02/07/2020 11:25

I'd smell worse than a tramp wanking into a packet of cheese and onion crisps.

No intention of finding out though. Two showers a day for me.

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 02/07/2020 12:08

If there’s a blood type correlation, it’d probably be with B blood as that’s more common in Asia than here.

It just seems to be a very specific gene that affect the production of an amino acid.

I’m not sure saying that your armpits don’t stink of BO is smug though. The OP specifically asked about armpits and deodorant. It is nice not to need deodorant. Although I do sometimes put some of DH’s antiperspirant on if it’s really hot because I’d rather not get sweaty if I don’t have to (regardless of the smell issue). He definitely sweats loads more than me though.

No gene is going to prevent you from needing to wash entirely. In particular, undercarriages should be regularly washed in everyone.

Nighttimefreedom · 02/07/2020 12:38

@MaraScottie I have that too! It adds to the stress of the situation.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 02/07/2020 12:41

I would smell terrible. I could go 48 hours without a wash if I had used a good anti perspirant, but at that point would be starting to whiff. No deodorant though... it would be a very short period of time indeed before I was offensively smelly.
