A 43-year-old German prisoner who travelled around Portugal in a camper van is now the focus of Scotland Yard's investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

As I read this thread I'm thinking ' Have people become more insane during lockdown?'

Sonotech · 04/06/2020 22:41

@Sparklingbrook

It's like bingo with someone else's tragedy

Spot on.

I’d say it’s a lot of people having the same views.
Noworrieshere · 04/06/2020 22:41

I was listening to a podcast (someone knows something) about a missing child in Canada

@Peapod29 I listened to that too, it was really gripping. Totally beside the point of this thread, but it stayed with me for a long time.

BeardedMum · 04/06/2020 22:43

I would never have left my children alone while they were sleeping, but I have left them home alone from a very early age (not toddlers) which I know is frowned upon in Britain. We all make our own risk assessments.
I hope Madeleine’s parents can get some closure, but this is every parents nightmare and it can happen to us all if we make the wrong decision in the wrong place at the wrong time!

7Days · 04/06/2020 22:43

That poor child and those poor parents.
And people still banging on about how they wouldn't have done it.
Brilliant, let's have 500 more identical comments shall we.

And what sort of nonsense was posted up thread about those dreadful type of parents who smoke.
Well dearie me.

knittingaddict · 04/06/2020 22:43

Agggghhhhh. Despite my earlier comments I really hope this thread is kaput in the morning. Can you really not help yourselves? Does it make you feel good?

SouthWestmom · 04/06/2020 22:45

The papers here seem to be getting braver in what they publish - The Guardian has his full name and photo. On the emersione the met said they'd had 300 calls already , hopefully not from too many time wasters

7Days · 04/06/2020 22:48

Noeuf wonder is that a sign that the case they have against him is very strong. Obviously the Police wont release all their evidence. But it's looking like they do have it.

Or just a race to the bottom by the media, after all even if the police are just fishing and a case wont stick to him - he's still an incarcerated sex offender and wont get too many people defending his privacy

Caelano · 04/06/2020 22:55

Agree saveeno. This guy will have been on the police force’s radar for years. He has multiple convictions, including for sex crimes. His properties, possessions, phones, etc will have been investigated numerous times. Why would anyone come out of the woodwork now and speak?

And it’s not like if anyone does have any information, they’re going to be some trustworthy honest individual; this could all be third hand information passed on, perhaps someone with a grudge.

It would be incredible if by some remote chance at some point concrete evidence comes to light but honestly...? After 13 years and no body it seems extremely unlikely.

SouthWestmom · 04/06/2020 22:56

I really hope it's the first one 70s
It just seems to be fairly factual so far just one interview with a neighbour and the rest about his life and living conditions
It would be (insert appropriate word for resolving a tragedy) to have an answer for the family and let them stop looking

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 04/06/2020 23:02

peaceanddove You're not living up to your username. Why are you saying all this, it's been said thousands of times in the last 13 years, why do you need to keep going on about it? This thread is about the new suspect.

Janaih · 04/06/2020 23:06

Heart goes out to the McCann family right now. I hope this leads to something conclusive.

RideaCockHorseOfCourse · 04/06/2020 23:17

According to newspaper reports he had various child sex offence convictions which started in his teenage years. In September 2005 he broke into an apartment in Praia da Luz and tortured and raped a 72 year old woman staying there. He filmed himself raping her. Between 2008-2016 he was in and out of jail for drug dealing and child abuse offences on 'little girls'. What a fucking waste of air space on this scum, not to mention the money and resources to keep him. Anyone who sexually interferes with and murders a child should be wiped from the face of this earth.

saveeno · 04/06/2020 23:22

Evidence of this person's involvement is scant and that is why the German police are looking for corrobarative evidence.

I hope the perpetrator is found, but I am doubtful somehow. But, we never know...

saveeno · 04/06/2020 23:25

Caelano

Agree, but we must wait and see what happens I suppose. Have to admit I'm a bit doubtful myself. But if proven wrong that is a result, sad as it may be.

7Days · 04/06/2020 23:26

saveeno the evidence released is scant. Different thing.

Theres bound to be more they are holding back on.
Well, I presume and hope so anyway

Caelano · 04/06/2020 23:26

I don’t get why some newspapers are reporting that German police think they know how MM is dead. With no body, how can it possibly be known?
Or is this part of the whole ‘someone in a bar said something several years ago to someone else which may or may not be true?’

Chillipeanuts · 04/06/2020 23:28

Enderthedragon

No it wasn't 'common' 13 years ago. People were horrified that they had done it back then.

Second that. No, it wasn’t “common” 13 years ago. Ourcokdestccus24. It wasn’t common wgebbtgeyvwerex3,either.,it has always been an individual choice.

saveeno · 04/06/2020 23:34

7Days,

Yes you could be right. But at the end of the day, I doubt they can convict him right now without some corroborating evidence just the same, which IMO is why they are seeking a former partner or some such to give specific evidence now.

7Days · 04/06/2020 23:37

Yeah I see your point saveeno

I do hope so, for the familys sake

saveeno · 04/06/2020 23:38

Caelano

Am puzzled also by the way the German Police have said that Madeleine is now deceased. They appear to need someone to back it up with evidence and where her little body lies. God it is awful. But hopefully an end to this lies somewhere out there soon.

Chillipeanuts · 04/06/2020 23:39

Oh ffs! Sorry! That should have read no, it wasn’t common even back then.

Our youngest was 4 at the time and I would never have dreamed of leaving him in the same circumstances.Any more than I would have dreamed of leaving his sister in the same circumstances 10 years earlier.

But what I would have done is irrelevant. Her parents judgement was woeful but the blame lies entirely with the perpetrator.
My heart goes out to them. They made the worst possible mistake and they have to live with that for ever. I wouldn’t do that. They did. Just imagine for a moment how that must feel.

SouthWestmom · 04/06/2020 23:42

Did you have anything to add on the possible developments chilli or are you just parroting your amazing parenting skills for us?

Caelano · 04/06/2020 23:42

@saveeno the reporting that the police think they know how she died is baffling. How on earth can they know?

saveeno · 04/06/2020 23:46

Caelano

I am baffled myself! With due respect to all concerned.

I cannot figure it out. But more might emerge over the next few days.
