Sweet Valley High

I have just discovered that most of the Sweet Valley High series are available on Kindle Unlimited and that I can get a two month free trial.

Anybody like to join me on a (socially distanced) journey back through life with Elizabeth, Jessica, Todd, et al?

OP posts:
HouseOfSticks · 31/05/2020 07:18

@niki26 I also have a Jessica named after Jessica Wakefield.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 31/05/2020 07:21

OMG I used to LOVE SVH!

Looking back it was hilarious- jessica was an absolute selfish bitch and Elizabeth was a goody two shoes martyr! They had "eyes the colour of the pacific ocean", hair like "spun gold" and perfect size 6 figures!!
wow- it was horrible cliches wasnt it?- now they'd have tattoos and piercings lol

I was a huge fan of the middle school ones. Think I had around 60 of them. Does anyone does anyone remember the excitement of the special editions, like 'Unicorns go Hawaiian' and the Halloween ones?

Nordstrom · 31/05/2020 07:28

The Carnival Ghost! That was it. I remember they used to cost a pound in Smiths. I was so excited to get a bit of pocket money to buy the next one.

Someone wrote a hilarious blog about re-reading Sweet Valley High in their thirties

I love this blog! Reread some of them along with the blog posts and found it hilarious.
HanPanPeg · 31/05/2020 07:40

Loved these! Much preferred the books to the tv series as Jessica was much more nuanced in the books. I took these things seriously!

The werewolf ones were set in London. The specials were even more ridiculous.

HanPanPeg · 31/05/2020 07:43

Also does anyone remember — and bear with me - a lighthouse(?) ghost one where they go with their cousin Robyn from San Diego? Think it was a middle school one!

Defs looking into this kindle thing - but why wouldn’t they have them all in order?? I used to get them from the library so just took whatever was there!

Sammysquiz · 31/05/2020 08:04

Elizabeth ends up with Bruce???!

I remember in one of the early SVH books she’s in a car accident, ends up having a personality change as a result and is just like Jessica, has a fling with Bruce, then accidentally bangs her head which reverses the personality change Hmm

The University ones were a bit weird. Jessica has a very mysterious boyfriend (Michael?). Also much was made of Elizabeth gaining weight (ie 2lb) and was - shock horror - no longer a perfect size 6!

ElectricMistofelees · 31/05/2020 08:05

Oh thank you for this! SVH is the content I needed today!

blue5467 · 31/05/2020 08:19

I'd recommend the Double Love podcast if you like SVH! Irish podcast where they go through each book week by week - hilarious!!

blue5467 · 31/05/2020 08:22

And evil Margo is the reason I can't get behind the popularity of Margot as a baby name now!!

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 31/05/2020 08:33

Elizabeth gaining weight (ie 2lb)

haha! A whole 2lbs? wow- she's practically shamu lol

I could never stand elizabeth- always such a boring goody two shoes, like an 80 year old Puritan in the body of a teenager. Jessica, whilst being a spoilt brat, was at least real and flawed and human.

MoMagic · 31/05/2020 08:47

Sweet valley high, point horror, sister sister, Sabrina the teenage witch and Dawson’s creek. Loved them all. Dd has started watching Sabrina reruns and is loving them

RingaRosie · 31/05/2020 08:59

I remember the one with the chubby girl, who loses the weight, becomes beautiful & starts bagging all of the high school Jocks. Ha ha...
Mum used to love a rummage in Oxfam, when we were kids, I’d always come away with a SVT book, vogue or a Princess Di Hello!

Fudgewhizz · 31/05/2020 08:59

Enid was in the TV series as Elizabeth's best friend but was a much smaller character in the books. Can anyone remember who Elizabeth's best friend was in the books?

burnoutbabe · 31/05/2020 09:25

Didn't Enid leave and come back with a different name and be Jessica's friend?
I liked brother Steven and his wife.

ScarlettDarling · 31/05/2020 09:28

@burnoutbabe

I got the adult series Blush Sweet valley confidential. Jessica and Todd are married!!!!
Hang on...wasn't Todd Elizabeth's boyfriend?
GallusAlice79 · 31/05/2020 09:36

I literally gave all my books away to charity a few months ago and reading this is making me regret it Sad

Elizabeth's best friend was Enid at SVH, but she had been friends with Amy in SVT. She comes back mid way through the SVH series and is more suited to Jessica.

middleager · 31/05/2020 09:38

That blog is hilarious Roxy

This intro: 'Who are these girls? They’re Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, those famous size-six, sunstreaked blonde, blue-green-eyed 16-year-old twins with the matching dimples in their left cheeks. Don’t worry, if you didn’t memorize these details the first time, they will be mentioned again, like on every other page of this book.'

Yes! That description was rammed down our throats.
As a short, overweight, brown haired, brown eyed teenager, I had somewhat of an inferiority complex!

AndAllOurYesterdays · 31/05/2020 09:47

I could never work out the first line of the theme tune either. You break down in a crowded hall, you see there is a beauty standing??

Fudgewhizz · 31/05/2020 09:47

Maybe it's not Enid I'm thinking of.... there was definitely a character in the TV series who went out with Winston but wasn't really in the books. It's driving me mad who it was!

Piggyhoolier · 31/05/2020 09:48

Just after Christmas my parents dropped off a huge box of my old books that had been in their loft. Was like finding the holy grail, dozens of sweet valley high & twins books, babysitters club, saddle club, point horror. Over 100 books in total. I have a 10 yr old DD and I set her off with the twins, she loves them and read through all that I had within a month. She’s less keen on babysitters club and hasn’t tried any point horrors. I just finished re-reading Malory Towers - the TV series inspired me, DD is obsessed by that atm. I love being able to share things with her, and the fact that she overlooks the lack of technology in all of these stories Grin

Namechangewhy · 31/05/2020 09:59

I’ve just subscribed to kindle unlimited to start reading these again! Thanks op. This has made my lockdown Grin

Sammysquiz · 31/05/2020 10:05

Wasn’t it ‘look back down in a crowded hall...’

Iwantacookie · 31/05/2020 10:06

@burntout I didnt know about that series. The last one I remember was svu where Jessica got married to (Mike?) He ended up in a wheelchair I think I cant remember it must be 20 years since I read these. Might have to try kindle unlimited
