The NEU is an amalgamation of the NUT and ATL. I'm amazed that ATL members were ever happy with that.

DominaShantotto · 18/05/2020 17:32

Huge cross garden garden party going on out the back of us - I'm hyper sensitive to garden noise but can't bring myself to give a fuck (unless they start singing school hymns again - they were rocking through a 1980s era Come and Praise a few hours ago when they found religion in among the wine bottles).

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 18/05/2020 17:34

I used to be in ATL, I was pretty shocked when they merged with the NUT. I was ATL because I taught in private at the time and they were the least likely to strike (NUT most likely!). My head at the time was very good about strikes but it felt wrong to strike over pay and conditions that weren't mine.

I've started sounding out friends who might be up for a less socially distanced than we ought to be walk. Fingers crossed.

Drivingdownthe101 · 18/05/2020 17:34

I have just conducted a personal attack on a school dementor. Awaiting my deletion.

tigger1001 · 18/05/2020 17:38

Just found this thread. Was starting to feel a bit lonely.

I've been told that I'm privileged to be furloughed and criticised for wanting to return to work, by the same person,

The thread on here about mask wearing was truly eye opening. I mean wear a mask if you want to by all means, but I'm not a mass murderer by choosing not to wear one up to now. Not sure if I will wear one

There's the benefit of the doubt that some of the more inflammatory anti-school rhetoric may be becoming from union-plants or govt-plants to stir up discord but there are a lot of known MN personalities also jumping in on it too.

There was, I think, some obvious trolling that wound many teachers up at the start.

However it does seem to be at the point that any concern even for Y10 and Y12 is now teacher bashing followed by loads of posts of Ha ha mine have full days lessons - ha ha everything is fine - which is not helping us worry less.

DH says we should perhaps focus more on A-levels - and just try and keep her enough on track to get to the college assuming everything is normal sep 2021 and post A-levels GCSE won't matter as much.

If things aren't and schools aren't back by Sep 21 then we'll look at the existing internet schools see if there a better option for our older two.

It's depressing reading all the other threads as it's been an usually bad day here for school work for no obvious reason though I still like having them all at home.

LilacTree1 · 18/05/2020 17:39

Domina “ don't know how her friend, who is a similar sort of age, is coping - but I can't see the pair of them returning to the routine and being able to physically do that again after more months of this regime.”

Sorry I’m losing track, is this in Scotland?

My mother was only just getting over dads death and is now reliving it all over again, no friends will visit.

LilacTree1 · 18/05/2020 17:41

tigger welcome along.

“ I've been told that I'm privileged to be furloughed and criticised for wanting to return to work, by the same person”

There’s a lot of cognitive dissonance, also a lot of people who believe we should just exist on bread and water.

Probably a friend to dump, sorry Flowers

DominaShantotto · 18/05/2020 17:45

Nah this is in England @LilacTree1

I think I've been in all the teaching unions over the years (apart from PAT I think it was) based on which was giving the best quality promotional freebies at the time. ATL won over NUT as they gave a highlighter AND pen at one point I remember.

The flower bombing pissed me off - I'm sorry but I think a parent on a parenting site is perfectly within their rights to be annoyed when a school provides fuck all in the way of work or support - and to discuss that, and thread after thread shut down with daffodils was ridiculous.

Went out to Costa earlier - and people were walking along in pairs and groups and there were cars out on the road (I'm making an intentional attempt to drive more so I don't get overwhelmed back behind the wheel) and it felt normal for a while - and that felt good. Then the hilarity of a guy trying to go through the drive thru on his bike (how the fuck did he think he was going to carry the cup home?!)

Was also bemused by the cyclist wearing a face mask, goggles, crash helmet and gloves - he looked like the Invisible Man trying to get his exercise count up!

maria860 · 18/05/2020 17:51

I'm So jealous you got a costa I want one so much

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 18/05/2020 17:53

Anti bac sprays at dawn... the surgical glove has been thrown down

No way? People find him attractive- I mean when awake. I was not awake and therefore not responsible for what happens in my mind and I haven't spent today wondering what he would be like In bed at all

Nihiloxica · 18/05/2020 17:54

Chris Whitty, I totally would.

That calm, authoritative, gentle voice Blush

DominaShantotto · 18/05/2020 17:57

I need brain bleach - and it's not to kill the virus.

Mascotte · 18/05/2020 17:57

Hi @tigger1001 yes, this is the place where shades of opinion are welcome.😊

There are ladies in our park dancing with rainbow hula hoops. I want one of those. Children chalking the pavements..all seems quite festive Grin

LilacTree1 · 18/05/2020 18:02

Domina but in England, those two ladies can restart their daily walk together?

DominaShantotto · 18/05/2020 18:04

Think they're too scared to Lilac - they're in the "shielding letter" group on the basis of their age. Plus where would they go? Can't go to their local cafe for a cuppa cos it's closed.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 18/05/2020 18:06

Today's figure is 160. So, VE day possibly didn't kill everyone, then.

Orangeblossom78 · 18/05/2020 18:06

Thanks for clarifying about the NUT change... I have been out of teaching for a while so didn't realise.

FrangipaniBlue · 18/05/2020 18:07

I'm so excited! My Ringtons delivery lad has just arrived and I have proper tea at long last. Haven't had deliveries for weeks and thought there wouldn't be for a while yet. The lad said he'd never had so many people so happy to see him.

OMG @ilovecardigans dare I hope mine will come on Thursday???? I've been hiding my last pack of triple chocolate cookies for 2 weeks Grin

LilacTree1 · 18/05/2020 18:09

Domina

There’s been a lot of confusion but I think this proves it doesn’t matter - over 70s aren’t shielded just due to age. Lots of over 70s in mum’s group didn’t get a shielding letter.

I’m not 100% but if a person doesn’t get the free food box, they’re not in the shielding group.

I hope they review their choice because they’re setting up so much ill health.

I know they can’t go anywhere but even a wander round the block would be good.

tigger1001 · 18/05/2020 18:10

@LilacTree1 yes you are right. Thankfully she's not a close friend. She doesn't see the toll that not working is taking on me. On jealous that I have all this lovely free time and she doesn't.

It's becoming really obvious in recent weeks that we are not all in this together and people are loving judging others. We, as a society seem to lack the ability to put ourselves in other people's shoes.

It's my eldest's birthday on Friday and really want to do a socially distancing visit to my dad's garden for a little while. But we are in Scotland so not really meant to do that, and don't want him to have the wrath of his neighbours

Drivingdownthe101 · 18/05/2020 18:12

BrightYellowDaffodil I was just thinking that. 10 days since the infamous VE Day conga lines... so we should be seeing a massive increase in cases and hospital admissions yes? But... they’re declining! The dementors are keeping very quiet.

bookworm14 · 18/05/2020 18:13

Latest from the school dementors: private schools aren’t going back!! I’ll send my kids back when the Cabinet do!! Eton isn’t going back!! Tories want to kill poor children!!

A) A lot of private schools are going back
B) it’s unclear if any of the cabinet have children in the relevant age groups
C) Eton isn’t going back because it’s both a secondary school and a boarding school (the latter would make distancing impossible).

These people are too stupid to function.
