Newbie popping on to say hello.

I live on the edge of a national park and I plan on driving 10 miles tomorrow to the middle of nowhere to go on a socially distanced walk with a friend. I'm genuinely nervous that our car tyres will be slashed because the local Facebook groups are full of dementors shrieking that we all need to stay in our own villages.

thenightsky · 15/05/2020 21:39

Scotland's closing all tourism for the year.

Well I hope everyone books lovely sunny abroad holidays next year and they can sit there, stroking their closed borders lovingly.

Mascotte · 15/05/2020 21:39

I need picture frames.

@thenightsky I'll be up for that!

In fact I'm tempted to move somewhere less self destructively parochial.

I didn't see news about a possible treatment, no, that's good to hear Smile I saw that the Oxford vaccine has done well in animal trials. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too far for a vaccine any time soon but still, good news!

(except for parents who won't be sending their kids to nursery until there's a vaccine... I can't imagine any vaccine's going to get rolled out to everybody for a while yet, it'll be emergency use to start with, and children as a low risk group aren't going to be the priority are they? Am thinking many of those parents will quietly backtrack before employers start clearing throats.)

Springersrock · 15/05/2020 21:42

I need to buy some plants

DH built some raised beds but neither of us CBA to stand in the queue at the garden centre for hours

Samtsirch · 15/05/2020 21:45

I won’t belong to a club that accepts me as a member.

MinnieMountain · 15/05/2020 21:46

They might not like tourists in Wells @beentothecoastalready but someone there is happy to keep our money for a cottage that we can't go to now. We'll stick with Hunstanton in future.

I was going to ask DM what she'd like to do for her 70th birthday this autumn but then thought we don't know if Cardiff will be "open" then.

Samtsirch · 15/05/2020 21:48

If you’ve got a blacklist I want to be on it.

beentothecoastalready · 15/05/2020 21:49

doesnt surprise me minnie. they like £££. Hunstanton`s more normal and less hunter wellies, black labs and a 4x4 as standard.

Samtsirch · 15/05/2020 21:50

Cripes am I on the wrong thread?
😆

beentothecoastalready · 15/05/2020 21:51

without tourism the town is nothing. Yet they slag off the tourists they utterly depend on! Fine, I`ll not bother then in future.

OutwardBound2016 · 15/05/2020 21:54

Checking in. I don’t know a lot about Scotland and how much reliance there is on the tourist trade but I expect it will hit Edinburgh hard, I read the news about National Trust Scotland which is very sad. I do think all these dementors will be livid when their nice walking holiday, dressed head to toe in Joules is ruined next year because everything has shut down!

Samtsirch · 15/05/2020 21:56

No she has had custody of Henry and his bro for a long time, they are playing old episodes due to lockdown, similarly the flood episode, Scruff turns up safe and well.

Mascotte · 15/05/2020 21:57

@OutwardBound2016 it's the main source of income for huge swathes of the population 🤷‍♀️

@Samtsirch you're on it 😂

MinnieMountain · 15/05/2020 21:58

I know. But we've got fond memories of going there in the late 90s/early 2000s before it got so up itself, so we thought it would be nice to take DS. We'll stick with Searles in future.

MIL and I BOTH went to food shops today (she's living with us for a bit).

Nihiloxica · 15/05/2020 22:00

Hello,

I have rejoined MN after several years of trying to regain my time just to be part of this thread.

I have been following you since the start and registered so I could be more than a silent lurker.

I'm tired of living in a hypochondriocracy. I want public health decisions to be made on the basis of numbers, not "common" sense or generalised public anxiety.

I also want any decision to lock children away from each other for extended periods of time to have a high bar to acceptance, which apparently they do not at present.

I realised last week that my 7 year old had spent the equivalent of her life in lockdown as if a 70 year old had been locked down for over a year. The suggestion that the elderly or vulnerable should lock down for that length of time is greeted with fury, but it is being demanded of our children as though their needs count for nothing.

Thanks for the thread.

OutwardBound2016 · 15/05/2020 22:00

Mascotte I assumed as much! My knowledge of devolved powers is limited, would NS be able to get a bail out from Westminster?. I must admit I was surprised when I saw on the news today that she seems to be on board with relaxing things (slightly), which makes it all smack of political point scoring which I don’t think will do her any favors.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 15/05/2020 22:01

Has anyone else noticed that today’s mortality figures seem to be rather buried? I struggled to find them, they certainly weren’t a headline like higher numbers were.

OutwardBound2016 · 15/05/2020 22:01

Just seen another poster start a thread similar to this, maybe people are being more vocal....

Campervan69 · 15/05/2020 22:02

beentothecoastalready have loved our beach trips. Dh has taken the older boys night fishing this evening with a barby to keep them cosy.

pollyhemlock · 15/05/2020 22:03

Place marking. I love these threads.

Daffodil101 · 15/05/2020 22:05

Hi Nih

I’m with you.

heroku · 15/05/2020 22:06

Just entered the Twilight zone on the phone to a family member. Apparently "a friend who works in the ICU" (read: some random off Facebook) says it's impossible that Boris could have recovered so quickly from intensive care. And that it's more likely he never had coronavirus and the entire thing was faked so that we all had more sympathy for his bollocksing everything up.

What a shame for Boris that he went to all that effort and everyone still thinks he's a bellend.
